Just Hold on

Sequel to ‘Just Breathe’

Previously Terri, her brothers and friends found love, and happiness. Three years later what has happened? What will happen? And will Terri be able to just hold on?

Chapter One:

The crisp October air chills as the shadows of the night expand into every corner. Walking now down the darkened street a girl pulls her jacket tighter around her thin frame. The cold wind slammed onto her pale face making the young 23 year old shiver. Walking briskly now to make it to her apartment, her jade green eyes quickly scanned the surroundings. Void and bare the small towns only movement was the changing of the traffic lights. Turning onto the familiar street with businesses and a store she hurries to the door next to the comic book store. Opening the door a rush of warm air from the heater rushed her. The heat welcoming as she trudges up the stairs after a long days work.

Only two apartments there, one at the end of the hall and one as soon as you reach the top step, She puts a key into large sturdy mahogany door and pushed reveling a small yet cozy apartment. The young women stepped inside and closed the door behind her locking two of the dead bolts and a chain. Shedding her jacket she quickly throws her auburn hair into a messy bun.

Scanning the dark room she reaches for the lamp and a few seconds later soft yellow light illuminated the once dark space.

“Skittles” the woman’s small voice cut threw the air. A moment later a large white Persian cat slowly padded to her. Purring loudly the over weight cat rubbed its self against her leg. “Okay, come on.” She said walking to the cabinet in the kitchen/dining room combo and pulled out some cat food. Placing it down she lightly rubbed the soft fur. “There you go.”

Leaving the now eating cat the young brunette walks into her living room and sets down on the oversized and comforting lazy boy recliner. Dark brown and soft to the touch she lays back and looks around the room. Three years ago her life was nothing like this. Now she lives alone, barley speaking to any one but her cat Skittles, her boss down at the local dollar store and the random customers that she is forced to talk to.

Her life use to be filled with family, friends, and even that special someone. She loved them all. Her eyes looked up to the wall to her right and locked onto a picture frame. Inside was the picture of young people at a church. At a wedding. The faces looked to happy. Her mind flashed back to the time when her life made since.

Flashback

“Can I get dance with the fair maiden?” he asked In a fake British accent and bowing a little. I shook my head in laughter.

“Of course kind sir.” I replied. We got on the dance floor and started to dance……………

……….“You don’t think your gonna get off with out dancing with me do you?” he asked. I just laughed and followed him back to the dance floor………………

………..“I love you too big man….you and your big whitened teeth.” We both laughed and I walked off …………….

…………“Are you staying here, or are you going to leave again?” I restated. He paused a minute.

“I think I’ll be around here for a long time. I’m not going any where.” he replied and my smile grew. …………..

…………I was looking around the other side of the room when I felt arms encircle my waist. I titled my head to look into the eyes of the man I love.

“Wanna dance?” he whispered. I nodded my head. Our song came on just as if on cue as we started to sway………..

End of flashback.

Sighing she ran her hands down her pale face trying to force the memories from her thoughts. She didn’t set out to live here. She had packed all of her things three years ago, threw them into her car and drove. A couple of hours into her trip she decided to go to Florida. How ever she did not make it that far. She didn’t have enough money and only made It as far as Mt. Sterling Kentucky. At first she despised the smallness of the town and worked for money to leave. Soon however the place had become home. She didn’t know if she ever wanted to leave.

Letting her eyes again roam the small room she grabbed a book next to her on the cluttered table to her left and began reading. An hour and a half into reading the exciting thriller the phone rang. This surprised her. She hoped it was not her boss wanting her to work another shift. He was the only person who had her number besides one of her brothers, and she had told him not to give the number away or call her unless it was an emergency. Taking a deep breath she answered the phone.

“Hello.”

“Terri.” her breath hitched.

“Jeremiah.” she said closing her eyes.

“Hey baby girl. How you been?” he asked.

“fine jerry, you?” Terri replied wishing she just had not answered the phone. Her brother on the other line sighed.

“Terri…something has happened.” Her mind began racing.

“What is it?” she asked worry etched into her voice.

“It’s Laura….she was killed Ter…she was murdered…” Her throat constricted as she felt tears began to form behind her eyes that she refused to let fall. Taking a deep breath she spoke.

“I’m on my way.” She let out a shaky breath and hung up the phone with out another word and began to pack her bags. She was going back to Detroit. Going back to her family she left three years ago. Going back to the place that reminded her of all the pain and sadness and what she no longer has. She was returning to her past.
