Chapter10: Breakthrough
“Hey, Alviss.”
A 10 year old boy with black spiky hair turned around as he was called. “What?”
“I found a great place to train near the mountain. Let’s go there together! I’ve asked the others too!”
“…ss”
“..viss..”
“ALVISS!!!”
The fairy’s voice scattered Alviss’ recollections. The rest of the group also looked at his direction because of her shouting.
“Alviss… You’re ignoring me…” Bell frowned.
“I’m sorry Bell,” Alviss made a little smile with his lips; “I was trying to remember what happened years ago.”
“Huh…” Bell puffed up her cheeks. “Then.. Do you remember something else than this place?”
Alviss sighed. “Not really. I still can’t remember either that guy’s face or name. However, I’m quite sure that he was at the same age as me.”
They had just arrived at a small town called Thore, where most of the missing boys of Cross Guard disappeared. Six years ago, it had been one of small numbers of town that hadn’t been destroyed by Chess. That’s why; Cross Guard built a temporary HQ there. It had been the place where the Cross Guards had assembled the orphans. However, it had been an old story. The building of the temporary HQ had been abandoned after the HQ had been moved. Parts of the town had been destroyed by the Chess in the last war. Near the town, there was a mountain that was surrounded by a thick forest. Team MAR was searching for a clue there.
“I can’t believe that the kids came here. This place is really dangerous. I doubt that the kids that came to this place could find their way to go back,” said Alan as he narrowed his eyes. He could barely see anything normally, although the sun was shining brightly because of the big trees that blocked the light. “There is someone, or something, else here besides us.”
“This place is really a great place to train the sixth sense since we can’t depend on only our eyes,” Nanashi narrowed his eyes, trying to see through the darkness. “Seems that this place is more dangerous than we think.”
“You’re right. They’re coming.” Dorothy tightened her grasp of her broom.
In the darkness they could felt cold eyes staring from the shadow, covered by red and white masks. Hidden figures with black cloaks stood in shadow. Silvers weapon ÄRMs shone under weak the sunshine that peeked among the trees. Pawns.
“Chess Piece!” Jack guessed correctly.
“It seems that there is really something hidden in this forest.” Snow stepped forward, “Leave them to me.”
“Wait, Hime-sama, how can we leave you here fighting alone?” Edward shrieked.
“It’s alright, Ed. There’s no way I can lose here. Beside, I’m the only one who can fight them here without destroying this thick forest, right?” Snow smiled; there was no way to stop her once this stubborn princess decided.
“But, still…” Ed begged, “It’s too dangerous.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll help too. I think I can do something to this forest.” Jack stepped forward following Snow. “It is ok, isn’t it?”
Snow nodded. “Please.”
“Let’s believe in them,” Danna patted Edward. “We’re leaving, Snow, Jack.”
So Danna, Ed, and the others walked into the deeper part of the forest. They quickly disappeared from sight.
“Well then, you gotten to got a plan, right, Snow?” said Jack without looking at his parent.
Smiling, she took a ring out from her pocket. “Of course. I can beat them all by myself. Mean while, can you start doing something to these trees.”
“You don’t have to ask me to do so. Let’s see what I can do here.” Jack walked away from Snow, disappearing behind the nearest tree.
“Alright then,” Snow started to pour magical powers into the ring. The wave of magical powers that surrounded her was moving faster and faster. “Undine!!”
With a soft splash sound, a watery figure appeared next to Snow. At first it was just like a big amount of water, but then it began to have a shape of a woman.
“It’s been a while, Snow,” Said the guardian, “This time, I need to beat them all, I believe.”
Snow nodded. ”Yes, but, please beat them without destroying the trees.”
“As you wish.”
Undine made some balls of water and threw them. The balls of water flew rapidly and aimed at the pawns. With loud splashes, they bumped into the pawns like tons of punches.
“I see. With small size of attack, we can avoid knocking down the trees.” Snow gazed the shadow among the trees. There were still a lot of unseen enemies. “However…”
“Yes. It’ll take a lot of time if they’re hiding like this,” Undine looked above. “It’ll be easier if we use rain like attack, but the roof of leaves is blocking this kind attack.”
“Don’t worry,” Jack shouted behind the tree. “I can fix this situation.”
A flash of light came from where Jack was then all the tree began to tremble and slowly became smaller and smaller as if their growth had been reversed. Now they were just some meters higher that Snow. The sunshine finally could reach the ground and everything that couldn’t be seen before could be seen now.
“Good job Jack!” Snow smiled confidently. ‘Now, go for it Undine!”
“Your wish is my command, Snow,” Undine raised her arms then suddenly; arrows like rain poured down from the sky and hit the Chess without hesitation.
“ARGH!!” the Pawns screamed as the rain hit them, tearing their cloak and crushing their masks. Not long afterwards, all of them were lying on the ground, unconscious.
“Water can be very dangerous if they are used at high speed. They can even cut the hardest thing,” Undine turned to Snow, her body began to disappear. “Well then, I hope I can see you again soon.”
“You did it, Snow,” Jack came out.
“Uun,” Snow shook her head, “I couldn’t do it without your help. I didn’t know you could do that.”
“Well, I can grow plant faster with my scoop so I just tried to reverse the growth of these trees and it worked,” Jack grinned, stroking his own head. “Nah, we’ve finished here. I hope the others are also doing well...”
“What’s this?!”
A mile from Jack and Snow, Alviss and the others found a strange door standing just in the centre of the forest. Gate to the other dimension.
“Why is there such a gate placed here?” Dorothy walked closer to the door, she put her hand 1 inch from the door. “There’s something with extraordinary power hidden inside this door.”
“Could this be the place where the missing members imprisoned?” Alviss asked. “The great place to train, huh?”
“Seems so,” Dorothy replied. “We’ll know if we go into it.” She looked to the sky; the sun seemed to shine brighter than before. “This is..”
“The trees have changed. It should be Jack’s work.” Alan took a cigar from his pocket and lit it with his fire based ÄRM.
“Yeah... We can see things clearly now...” Nanashi activated his griffin lance. Under the now shining-so-brightly-sun, they could see some giant black furred creatures stood behind the tall bushes. “Things like them…”
The black creatures jumped out and roared. Their sharp white teeth and iron like claws were ready to rip human flesh.
