It seemed like time was flying by, and Sam Winchester was standing outside of it, untouched by everything but his mission.

He had to find Dean. He had to find Dean.

He remembered the jerk’s smile. Dean always did smile at the most inappropriate times. Now Dean’s smile haunted him, taunted him. His last clear memory of his big brother was Dean’s smile.

Dean’s sad, broken smile. Too late Sam had seen it for what it was.

Too late Sam had recognized there was more to his brother than he had ever realized.

Just as he realized what he had, Dean was gone. That quickly, their roles were reversed: Dean leaving and Sam unable to live without him.

It was insane. Dean never purposely hurt Sam, but now Dean had left him shocked and broken in his wake. Had this been how Dean had felt when Sam had left him? Dying inside?

Sam would find him and find out. He would unravel Dean’s mysteries and heal both their broken hearts.

He just had to find him first find him first find him first. After all, Dean couldn’t be dead. Dean wouldn’t have left Sam to survive alone.

And Dean had been smiling.
