Wow, I never expected such positive reviews for 'Nine Year Old…'! Since many of you wanted a sequel, here it is!
The cool white silk of the dress felt exquisite against my skin. Like always, Aunt Alice was a fashion genius. In a month, I would wear it on my trek down the aisle towards my love, Jacob Black.
I stared at the girl in the mirror, who was modeling a loose fitting wedding dress, no sleeves but long gloves, a long train, and a waist length veil. I imagined the top of the mirror was Jacob's smiling face and proclaimed, "I do!" I giggled and fell back on my bed, dreaming.
"Easy! If you tear this dress, I'll make you wear a sack," chided my Aunt Alice. Giggling all the while, I handed the precious dress and veil over to her safe hands. Mom stood by the doorframe the entire time, smiling serenely. While I put my clothes back on, she said, "I wish I could say I was as excited as you are when I married your dad." I turned to face her, an incredulous look on my face. I couldn't think of two people who were happier than my beautiful parents.
"Mom, weddings aren't as scary as you think," I said. She answered, "Try telling that to your Grandma Renee." Of course, I knew all about my grandmother's fear of early marriage, which Mom had inherited. But seeing the happiness in hers and Dad's eyes took away any fear I had. Jacob and I were completely sure we wanted this.
I still remember the days when I wasn't so sure…
When I was three years old, I hit puberty. I shot up about five inches and looked very out of balance, until my chest and bottom erupted from out of nowhere after my fourth birthday.
Three months before that birthday, my family and I were visiting La Push, and I was looking at the toddler in Emily Uley's lap. A strange feeling of uncertainty brought Dad's and Uncle Jasper's attention to me. I excused myself and went outside, leaving Jacob confused. My parents followed me.
I reached the woods near our cottage in a few moments and let the tears flow. I heard Dad's footsteps behind me and felt Mom's hand on my shoulder. Only Mom looked concerned but Dad had heard my thoughts and understood my fears completely. I sobbed into Mom's chest while she hugged me close. With a touch, I let her know my fears.
Will I be able to have Jacob's children…?
Mom gasped audibly and I felt her chest heave with unshed tears. Dad hugged us both and said, "Renesmee…we're not sure. But we'll ask Grandpa Carlisle and Nahuel."
We all knew the cold truth: a female vampire's body couldn't change in order to sustain another life.
I didn't let Jacob know, fearing he would see me differently. Werewolves imprinted and continued the species, but we didn't know if I had that ability. That night, I clutched a pillow to my stomach while I sat in my grandfather's office, fighting new tears before Grandpa delivered his verdict, "Only one of Nahuel's sisters, Debora, has had a child. Her own enhanced strength saved her from death." I looked up to his kind face as he continued, "Humans, vampires, and werewolves are much more genetically compatible than we thought. I am not sure if the vampire in you permits pregnancy, but we're leaning towards your human side. We can only be sure after your first menstruation."
None of us knew when that would be. But I started to worry about the child's, if I ever had one, rate of aging. I asked, "When did Debora's child stop aging?" He guessed my true question, "The little girl was four years old when she reached maturity. Her heart rate is more like that of a human. The only reason she's survived is because she lives with her human father. I think the catalyst for immortality is the vampire gene."
He paced a few more times and continued, "Jacob's aging is delayed significantly, so his werewolf genes and your own immortality should ensure that the child will age at the same rate you did."
After that, there was no more talk of children. Of course, Jacob knew something was bothering me, but said nothing about it. I finally understood why my Aunts Rosalie and Alice and Grandma Esme had doted on me so much. I was the entire family's child.
One night, a few weeks before my fourth birthday, I dreamt about a little boy with brown hair and brown eyes, smiling as he chased a butterfly. The next thing I knew, I was running alongside two wolves, one of them much bigger than the other.
I woke up in the middle of the night with a slight stomachache and discovered a small, red stain in my underwear. My shriek was heard in the small cottage and my parents where at the door instantly.
"Renesmee, what's wrong?"
"Are you hurt?"
I ran up to them and instinctively pulled Mom in and closed the door in Dad's face. But he figured it out and I thought I heard him mutter, "But…what…how…?"
Mom checked my arms, "Nessie, where are you hurt? I can smell the blood!" I put my hand on her face and told her.
Mom, I think I got my period…
A few tests confirmed it. I was able to have children. But Aunt Alice had already predicted it and was careful not to think about it around Dad. When she silently handed me a box of pads I blushed and hid them under my shirt on the way home.
My eighteenth birthday was celebrated by my family, everyone in La Push, Grandpa Charlie, and Grandma Sue. Jacob took me aside and kissed me. This was just like the kiss I gave him in the meadow nine years ago. My parents made no move to stop us.
This morning, we walked on First Beach, hand in hand, and watching the Uley boys dive off the cliff. We lay on the soft sand and I let my long hair fan out behind me. Jacob played with a strand and murmured, "A month…and you'll be Renesmee Black…" I smiled and continued to watch the Uleys until they left. Hopefully, in a few months, I would be taking care of that little boy from my dreams. Jacob worried as well, but was sure the child would be immortal.
I placed my fingers on his face lightly. Mr. and Mrs. Black…I put my head on his slowly rising chest. Eden wasn't lost. We had found it.
Something in the wing changed suddenly. We both sat up and sniffed the air. The smell was the familiar sweet scent of a vampire, but this particular scent made Jacob cringe. He got in front of me and growled at whatever had appeared. "Jacob, what is it?"
That moment, a scene from my nightmares became real.
A small, brown haired vampire with a beatific smile stood in front of us. I remembered her from the night I thought I would lose my family.
Jane of the Volturi's voice rang, "My…you have grown, Renesmee Cullen."
My entire body was engulfed in flames. I clutched myself and fell to the sand, screaming. I heard Jacob fall as well, and his howls of pain added to mine. I had never experienced pain like this besides birth. The pain erased everything else, and all I wanted was for death to come. My hands reached out for someone…anyone…in a desperate attempt to speak.
I want to die…!
In the dark I heard an angelic voice, "Renesmee! Jacob!" Warmth surrounded me and the pain stopped instantly. Someone's arms were around me and I recognized the floral scent.
Mom…Mom…Momma.
I opened my eyes and there she was, but her beautiful face was contorted in a snarl. I saw Jacob shuddering in front of us as he got up and saw Jane's face straining in concentration. Mom's shield saved us from the flames.
I heard Dad's voice beside us, "Good morning, Jane," as if this were a happy reunion. Jacob, still inside the shield, settled to a defensive crouch. Dad continued, "It's been long. Tell me, what has my family done to make you attack my daughter and future son-in-law?"
Jane turned her scowl towards my father and smiled once again, "Only Aro's desire to have your family join ours, Edward."
I heard Mom scoff and say, "So, does his request include threatening our family?" Jane hissed audibly, "No, that was revenge for your insolence eighteen years ago, Bella." Dad angrily said, "Anything to ensure their power, isn't it? Tell Aro that we must decline his offer once again."
"I plan to. And send our regards to Carlisle…"
Her scent disappeared completely, and so did my consciousness.
"Nessie…? Edward!"
"Nessie! Bella, what's wrong with her?"
"She's probably in shock…Bella, keep your shield up. Jacob, tell the others in La Push to patrol the entire area. The entire state if you must…"
Mom's flowers surrounded me the entire way home.
