There comes a time when every lonely boy must learn to dance.

“A dance?” Hyuga Neji asked, looking at the invitation in his hand.
“A dance,” confirmed his teammate and best friend Tenten.
“Well, I’m not going,” he said decisively.
“Why not?!” Tenten asked incredulously.
Neji stared at her with a smirk. “Tenten, after 6 years of being on the same squad as me, I’d think you know me better than that. You’d really think that I’d go to this pointless party that’s just an excuse for Tsunade-sama to get drunk?” he asked.
Tenten contemplated his point and said, “You’re right. But that doesn’t mean you have an excuse to not go! I mean REALLY, Neji. You’re always training,” she put a hand on his shoulder, looked directly into his white eyes, and said seriously. “You need a social life.”
Unnoticed by Tenten, the usually stoic Hyuga blushed as she stared into his eyes with her chocolate brown orbs.
“I have a life, Tenten,” he said. “I have lots of friends.”
Tenten looked at him skeptically. “Uh huh, whatever you say, Neji. Whatever you say…”
The Hyuga just glared at her and she did the same thing. After a few minutes of not blinking, Neji could see Tenten’s eyes starting to water. In fact his were very close to giving out, too. “Give it up, Tenten. You’re never going to beat me at a glaring contest,” he said.
Tenten blinked, “Damn you, Neji! I almost had you!”
“Actually no you didn’t.”
“Can you TRY to let me believe I was winning? Nooooo, you just HAVE to go and point out the obvious!” she said as she stuck her tongue out at him. “Well, anyway, I guess since you’re not going, I’m going to have to go look for someone else to be my date to the dance, so bye Neji! I wonder if Gaara’s free…” she pondered as she started to walk away.
“…Wait, what?!” Neji said, finally getting the meaning of Tenten’s words a few seconds later. He ran after her just as she was exiting the clearing. “You’re asking Gaara to the dance?!”
Tenten smirked slightly, “Well, I mean if he’s free…unless he’s going to go with someone else of course. And besides, I don’t want to be the only girl there without a date! I’d be the laughing stock of the village, duh!” she ranted.
Now Neji felt guilty…and slightly jealous even though he was never going to admit it.
“Well, I guess I have to get going now…again….bye Neji!” Tenten said once again as she turned to leave…again.
“Wait, Tenten,” Neji said, stopping her in her tracks a few feet away. “I’ll go…to the dance…with you…”
Tenten, whose back was to him before, turned around with a smile on her face, “Aw, Neji! Really? You’d interact with other human beings for me? I feel so special!”
Neji stared back at her, “…I’ll come pick you up tomorrow at 7?”
Tenten kept smiling her infectious grin at him, “Ok, see you tomorrow at seven then.” Then she turned around and walked off toward her apartment.
Neji stood there grinning like a madman until his Hyuga senses came over him, “I’m going to a dance…Shit, I need help.”

“TENTEN!!” yelled out Ino Yamanaka.
Tenten turned around to see said blonde, her pink haired friend, Sakura Haruno, and Hinata Hyuga.
She smiled as she saw her best friends seated at The Café and walked over to them saying, “Hey guys, what’s up?”
“Nothing much, just discussing the dance tomorrow night; you?” Sakura responded.
Tenten, taking a seat at their table, said, “Oh, yea, that reminds me. Hey, guys, can you come with me to come pick out a dress?”
…silence…
“Cereal?” Ino asked.
“Huh?”
“It’s her new way of saying ‘Serious?’,” Hinata explained.
“Oh, well, yea…I’m serious,” Tenten said.
“GASP!” Sakura…gasped.
“MY LITTLE TENTEN’S GROWING UP SO FAST!” Ino cried, wiping the corners of her eyes.
“Uhhh…” Tenten and Hinata sweatdropped.
“Anyway,” Sakura said, turning serious, “Since when do you ask for our advice in clothes?”
“Yeaaaa,” Ino said suspiciously, “Tenten, what are you hiding?”
“Nothing.”
“…” Ino scrutinized her. “OK, who is he?”
“Huh?”
“The guy you’re going with to the dance, duhzzie!” Sakura said, exasperated.
“…I’m not saying…” Tenten said, zipping her lips and throwing the key away.
“Spill!”
Tenten shook her head.
“Please, Tenten?” Hinata asked.
“Nope.”
“TELL ME!”
“NO! who I’m going with is my business!”
Ino pointed an accusing finger at her, “AHA! So you are going with somebody!”
“Ino!” Hinata scolded, being ever the peacemaker. “IF Tennie wants to tell us who she’s going with, she will.”
“Thank you, Hinata!”
The navy haired Hyuga smiled sweetly and then asked, “So who ARE you going with?”
Tenten slapped her forehead in annoyance.

“So…you’ve come to me for help, huh, Hyuga?” said a voice from behind the tall office chair.
“Unfortunately, yes,” Neji said.
“Well you’ve come to the ri-”
“Dobe, get out of my chair,” the voice of Sasuke Uchiha said from the doorway.
Neji turned around to see said Uchiha leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed.
“Huh?”
“AW, TEME!” Naruto Uzumaki said, swirling the chair around so that Neji could see his mass of spiky blond hair very clearly. “I was soo close to getting away with it!”
“Naruto…” Neji growled shooting him a death glare.
“Heh heh, Neji, my man!” Naruto said, scrambling out of his chair and backing up as the Hyuga walked menacingly toward him. “Hey! I wasn’t really gonna play you! Sasuke-teme, help me out here!” he called.
“Neji, leave him alone. You wanted to talk?” Sasuke said coolly.
“Oh, yes. Um, Uchiha? Uh, I kind of…have a date…and I kind of sort of need…advice…” Neji said awkwardly and a little reluctantly.
“Really, Neji?! Ooh ooh with who?!” Naruto asked, all excited.
“Shut up, Dobe,” Sasuke said. Then, turning to Neji, he raised an eyebrow and asked, “But the dobe does have a point. With whom may I ask do you have this date with?”
Neji flushed a little and mumbled, “Tenten.”
“Who?” Sasuke said, amused to see the usually calm, cool, and collected Hyuga all nervous.
“Tenten,” Neji said a little louder.
“I still can’t hear you,” Sasuke said, a small, teasing smirk plastered on his face.
“Tenten, got it?!” Neji yelled.
“Ahhh, I see,” Sasuke said knowingly.
“Ohhh, Tenten-chan? Good choice, Neji!” Naruto said, raising his hand for a high five, but lowering it when he caught Neji’s glare and said, “Not that I’d go with her since I have Hinata-chan and all and…I’ll just shut up now, yeah.”
“Good choice.”
“Anyway,” Sasuke continued as if Naruto hadn’t interrupted. “You need advice, correct? On how to treat her?”
It was a rhetorical question, but Neji nodded anyway.
“Ok, here’s what you need to know…”

“I can’t believe you got Neji-nee-chan to go to the dance with you,” Hinata said. She and Tenten were currently walking back to Tenten’s apartment after a day of extreme shopping for dresses with Ino and Sakura.
“Yea, well, it’s hard to resist my charm,” Tenten said jokingly, fluttering her eyelashes. She and Hinata giggled. “But, trust me, it was NOT easy.”
“Oh?”
“I used the ‘I’ll-ask-Gaara’ card,” Tenten said, smirking slightly.
“No you didn’t!” Hinata said, shocked.
“Yea,” Tenten smiled.
A small, comfortable pause followed, then Hinata said, “But you know he really cares about you right?”
Tenten smiled ruefully. “Yea, but we’re definitely ‘just friends’. He’s too consumed in his training to go out with any girl anyway.”
“That’s not true!” Hinata insisted. “I know for a fact that he likes you, Tennie-chan. Who wouldn’t?”
“Aw, thanks, Hina. You’re always nice, but I’m positive he doesn’t like me,” Tenten stated. Sighing she said, “Not the way I like him…”
