Medusa
Chapter thirteen
When death didn’t come Dean cracked his eyes open and looked back toward the creature. The body of the creature was swaying in front of him minus her head which lay on the ground near Dean’s foot. He kicked it away then watched in disbelief as the body continued swaying in front of him for a few seconds then collapsed in a heap by his feet. Who had killed her he wondered as he pulled himself out from between the rocks and picked up his machete. It was then he saw a figure standing at the entrance to the cave.
“Bobby!” Dean couldn’t believe the man he thought of as his surrogate father was standing in front of him a big smile on his face, blood dripping from his machete. “What….what the hell are you doing here?”
“Thought you might need a little help.” He said as he walked over to Dean and patted him on his shoulder. “It’s good to see ya kid.”
“But how did you know I might need help?”
“Sam called me.”
“Sam?”
“Yeah, he called me early this afternoon, said you could use a little help.”
“But how did you get here so quick?”
“My neighbor has a crop dusting plane. He owed me a favor.” Bobby grinned. “I cleared his barn of a nest of vampires two years back….So where’s that brother of yours?”
“He didn’t tell you?”
“Tell me what? All he told me was the town’s name and that you needed help at a local quarry…..He said you two were chasing a Medusa….You’re lucky boy, that thing almost had you.”
Tears glistened in Dean’s eyes and Bobby felt a cold chill go through him.
“What’s wrong Dean? Something wrong with Sam?”
“Sam looked into her eyes Bobby. He’s dying.”
“Was he taking the herbs?” Bobby knew John’s journal had the precautionary herbs written down in it.
“Yeah, and they delayed the effects for awhile but…..” Dean quickly wiped at his eyes with the back of his hand not wanting to seem weak in front of Bobby, he then continued. “Bobby….Sam’s dying. I need to get to him.” Dean started out of the cave with Bobby right behind him. They would return later to bury the creature’s body.
“Sam never told me he was sick. He was more concerned about you.” Bobby said as followed Dean from the cave.
The hospital
They hurried back to the Impala leaving Bobby’s rental car at the mouth of the quarry, they then sped toward the hospital….They made it back in less then twenty minutes. They hurried down the hallway to Sam’s room.
“She’s dead, so Sam should be alright, right?” Dean asked Bobby praying he’d hear him tell him that Sam would be just fine.
“He should be fine as long as he took the herbs, once a Medusa is dead all symptoms should vanish almost immediately….Unless…..”
“Unless what?” Dean glanced at Bobby. Why must there always be an ‘ unless?’ he wondered.
“Unless we’re too late…. If Sam’s body already turned to stone before she died…. we’ve lost him.”
Dean’s heart pounded in his chest as he rounded a corner and ran toward his brother’s room
“Sam!” He shouted as he ran through the doorway. Sam’s bed was empty and there were clean sheets on it. “No…..oh no……” Dean kept repeating softly as his eyes filled with tears, he knew there would have been no reason to move his brother unless…. He looked at Bobby whose own eyes glistened with tears.
“Sorry Dean.” Bobby’s voice cracked with emotion.
“No….oh God please no…..” Dean ran out into the hallway and over to the nurse’s station. “My brother was in that room….Where is he?”
“I just came on duty and was told the bed was no longer needed and to change the sheets.” When she saw the look on Dean’s face she added. “I’m sorry.”
Dean turned away and began walking down the hallway looking in other rooms praying he’d see his brother in one of them.
“Sam can’t be dead Bobby….he can’t be…” He could barely get out the words.
“I’m sorry Dean; we just didn’t get it done on time.”
Dean stopped in the middle of the hallway, his face etched with pain.
“What am I going to do without him Bobby?”
“Do without who?” Sam came walking out of an adjacent hallway smiling.
“Sam!” Dean ran over to his brother and gave him a tight hug then quickly pulled away embarrassed by his show of emotion. “What the hell’s going on?”
Before Sam could answer his doctor came walking up behind him.
“I couldn’t keep him in bed, as soon as he felt better he ripped out the tubes and I think he was going to go look for you.” The doctor looked at Dean. “I never saw anything like it. Your brother’s body was turning into what appeared to be stone and the ventilator could barely force air into his lungs any longer. We thought he was gone….Then all of a sudden his condition reversed and within a few minutes he was fine, like nothing had happened…. It was like a miracle happened… This is a really remarkable case and I’d like to have him checked out thoroughly before he leaves. I’d like to see him in my office as soon as possible so I can line up some tests I’d like done on him.”
“Just let me have a few minutes alone with him and I’ll bring him right there.”
“My office is on the third floor…. room 309.” The doctor turned and headed toward the elevator.
“We’ll be right up.” Dean shouted to him even though he knew there was no way he was going to take Sam up to the office. Right now their main concern was getting out of the hospital and as far away from the area as possible. They didn’t need anyone asking them questions. As soon as the doctor got on the elevator they headed as quickly as they could to the exit then piled into the car and sped off. Dean figured they’d return to the quarry and bury the creature then drop Bobby off at the rental car that he had used to get to the quarry from the airport.
“Good to see ya Bobby.” Sam smiled as he looked back over the front seat.
“When you called you shouldn’t have let out the part about you dying.” Bobby was a little pissed that Sam hadn’t told him the whole story.
“It wasn’t important Bobby…..There was nothing you could have done for me except help Dean kill the Medusa…..which is what you did.”
“When did you call him?” Dean asked still amazed that Bobby had gotten there so quickly.
“Right after you left the first time…. I figured you could use a little help.”
“You didn’t have to call Bobby, I could have handled it.” Dean looked in the rear view mirror and winked at Bobby, but Sam caught the small exchange.
“You’re welcome.” Sam said not waiting for a thank you from Dean. “…and thanks.” He added knowing if it hadn’t been for them he’d be dead. He then settled back in the seat relieved that once more they had managed to beat the odds. It felt good to be alive he thought as he rolled down the window and breathed the cool night air deep into his lungs.
