“Just Because!” Alyssa stared into Zach’s eyes, begging him.

He smiled back. “Jack would say that’s not a good enough reason.”

“So?” She looked away, frowning. “I care what you say.”

“What I—” Zach chuckled. “Why? Is my opinion that important?”

Alyssa stamped the sand underfoot. “How can you say that?!” She glared at him. “Of course it is! You’re my only friend!” She let a tear fall.

“Are you sure?” Zach continued to smile.

“Yes.” Alyssa searched his face. “I’m joining.”
