Full Moon
He ran.
Why?
Like this?
Why me?
Being alone scares me.
The wind is with me.
But that’s it.
The large fox-like figure ran on all four paws, running so fast the naked eye would think it wasn’t even touching the ground. Its mouth was clamped shut and its eyes were squeezed closed as if it was just waiting to run into a tree or rock. The forest outside of the nearest town was the darkest and most abandoned place he could go. It was the only place he felt comfortable; where he fit. It was an empty black space, just like him.

Naruto Uzumaki had a sleek, strong figure. He wasn’t tall but he wasn’t short and his stark blonde hair was the only thing abnormal about him, that, and the odd birthmarks that faintly traced his cheeks in six horizontal lines, three on each side.
The morning was just starting to peek its face on the town of Konohagakure. The town was small, it had a few grocery stores, a theater, an old out-of-date bank, and two schools, one for elementary and middle school and one for high school, among other things,
Naruto loved the town. It had been his home for fourteen of his fifteen years and the small house he lived in on the outskirts suited him fine. His small abode only gave him shelter and a place to nap during the day. He stayed outside and in the woods behind his house more than he did inside. School was only something he went to when he was bored.
Overall Naruto lived his life in the town as an unnoticed addition to the population count. The rest of the town avoided him and he spent his time in the actual town as little as he could. The hurried whispers behind his back and the pointed glares or shocked expressions were almost too much for him to handle. It was hard to understand him so people turned to creating stories about him. Fed by reality and loose imaginations.
Naruto used one of his older copies of the newspaper he used to get to mop up a puddle of water that was forming under one of the larger holes in his kitchen, if you could call it that.
Before he could completely saturate it he caught sight of an article covering the “Latest Sighting of the Werewolf!” He could only smirk a cynical feelingless smirk and throw it down on the puddle he had been standing by.
“Wonder what they’ll do to the writers when they do finally find out what it was…” He trailed off after looking at himself in the mirror he had on the other side of the room.
He rubbed his hand through his hair ruffling it back so it looked like fur. Ironic.
Naruto was tired. He was tired of running. He was tired of the smells. He was tired of not sleeping. He was tired of the dark. And he was tired of being alone. The way he lived his life, he was used to being alone for long periods of time, but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt him. He yearned for companionship or a friend. Someone to share the burden he held. Someone to help.
Accepting someone though, would be hard to do after being a social outcast for so long.
He grabbed a semi-clean shirt and pulled off the one he was wearing. He slipped the new shirt on and headed for his favorite spot outside. Being alone, a lot of his time went into customizing his forest. He referred to the whole forest as his. It just felt like a second home, and no one else spent any of their time there so it was all his. His to shape and keep close. Something he wouldn’t have to worry about losing.
Naruto’s favorite place so far was a giant boulder he had recently moved to fit into an alcove in a giant weeping willow tree. The boulder fit perfectly and made a nice place to sit and listen. Listening to the sounds of his forest was his out. It was a way to forget about his loneliness and know that there were things sharing the forest with him. Small things, but they were there. His favorite sound was the crickets’ chirp. When he would come out at dusk it was all that would fill his head.
His mellow atmosphere was interrupted with a grumble and Naruto felt as empty as his stomach sounded.
“Hmm ramen? I only had that for the past two weeks, nothing wrong with some more,” he said to no one. It was meant for no one, but someone did hear it.
Sasuke Uchiha was desperately lost. Like being in the middle of Tokyo, Japan without a map lost.
His ears perked at the sound of the voice he heard to his right so he made his way that way. His jeans were ripped and his shoes were muddy, his hair and shirt were fine, but his expression was enough to show anyone that he was lost and wanted out.
Naruto knew every sound his forest made and footsteps other than his were not one of them. He stopped walking and turned slowly to check whom it was that had violated his quiet.
“Um hey, is anyone there? Still be there, and if you’re walking away could you not be an asshole and stop?” Sasuke’s plea for help annoyed Naruto and he pondered running back home. But the chance for something different led him to stand there and shake his head at the disheveled figure that came into the clearing he made a while back.
Sasuke pulled his leg out of an attacking patch of briars and brushed himself off.
Looking Naruto over he asked, “Do you know the way out? I swear this fucking forest is bigger inside than what it looks like on the outside.”
Naruto couldn’t help but scowl at the rudeness he showed but he nodded.
“I know this forest like the back of my hand. Where’d you come in from?”
Sasuke didn’t answer for a minute studying the other teen’s appearance and raised an eyebrow.
“Um behind the school, there was a path and I was running the track. I thought it might be nice to just walk. Get away from the fucking audience I have every morning.”
Naruto wanted to ask him why he would have an audience while he was simply running but his stomach growled again and he covered it in an embarrassed attempt to shut it up.
Sasuke didn’t notice though and he crossed the clearing over to Naruto’s rock and tree combination, running his hand along the boulder’s smooth surface.
Naruto coughed slightly to get his attention. He figured other people would be a little confused by the way the rock fit so “snug” with the tree. So maybe he didn’t know his own strength, who was ever going to complain about it?
“Did you do this?” Sasuke asked, turning to Naruto.
“Are you stupid? There’s no way in hell a person could move a rock that big.” Naruto turned and started to head for the school. “If you want out then follow me, but don’t get left behind, I’m not making two trips.”
Sasuke left the clearing, following after a complete stranger that could all but be leading him into some sort of trap or something that was not going to make Sasuke’s day any better. He was pissed and needed to take it out on someone. Or something. But his common sense told him that his “guide” wasn’t going to take anything without a fight, so he quietly followed and soon fell in rhythm with Naruto, who was in rhythm with the forest.
A/N: Let me know what you think with my angsty bits, Naruto's not completely OOC, he's just like he would've been if he never had friends yet...
