Chapter 1: Swept Away
With shivering cold hands she wiped the frost that had built up off her face, and continued to trek through the cold snow that reached up to her mid calves. Blue hair damp and sticking to the back of her neck only to make the blizzard that much colder as she stifled a bad cough. The two males were not to far ahead of her and they seemed to be standing the cold a bit better then she was, well probably a lot better. They had been smart enough to buy the necessary clothes, and unlike her a thin pair of pants and her pink shoes weren’t enough to keep her body warm.
Inwardly she felt like screaming out, and thrashing the boy leading the way as he was the one who had dragged her into going through possibly one of the worst blizzards in over two years, for this stupid town they were heading to. His little rival had stated after Ash’s battle that he was heading to the next town and set off immediately, and the rivalry spiked up as Ash set off that night even after the warning Nurse Joy gave them.
Sure, she would like to scream and throw her hands around his neck and throttle the boy, but unfortunately her hands were numb and her lips were chattering and blue. Talking would only come out in slurred words from chattering so bad and the thought of running would have only been in her dreams. The snow was thick and it took all her effort to move her limbs just to keep her walking, within the footsteps the others had made eased the pain of walking a bit, but it was still there.
A sudden whip of cold air, smacked her in the face as she flinched losing her footing against the rough wind and falling into the snow. Her hands immediately numbing once they had hit the snow covered surface as she felt the arms of her jacket get wet, and slowly she could feel the goosebumps rise up underneath her long sleeve shirt as it soaked through her jacket.
Scrambling to her feet and blowing into her hands she continued to walk, noticing the little factor that tripping had managed to slow her down quite a bit, as she could barely squint out the backpack Brock had brought.
“B-Brock! Wait up!”
She cried out, moving her numb legs a bit faster.
“Brock!”
Her teeth chattered together as she struggled to keep up with the two in front of her. The roar of the wind made any cry toward her friends nothing but a simple whispered carried away like words never meant to be spoken.
I-it’s s-so cold..
As her two friends became nothing but a figure outline she struggled to continue walking, each step feeling like nothing but dead weight. Her clumsy footing in the snow was no help, as she managed to trip over her feet again, planting herself chest high in snow as she sat on her knees blowing on her frozen hands, attempting to regain circulation.
“B-Brock! Ash!”
She cried out, squinting her eyes shut as she screamed for her two friends who had disappeared into the blizzards thick blanket.
I’m gonna die out here in the f-freezing cold, just b-because Ash wanted to get to Snowpeak before P-Paul did.
She would have openly welcomed the rage she felt for her friend knowing that the anger might make her feel a bit warmer if possible, but any hope of sparking a flame of hate in this blizzard was simply put out, buried upon, and frozen.
“Dawn!”
With arms wrapped around her frozen form, she glanced up daring to open her eyes while the snow piled upon her eyelashes feeling like they were beginning to freeze as well.
“Brock!”
Tears would have gathered in her eyes if it wasn’t for the fact she was afraid they would have frozen on the spot.
“Come on Dawn, we have to keep going. Snowpeak isn’t to far from here!”
The wiser of her friends, held their hand out as she gratefully accepted the support to her feet as he remained by her side helping her every time she began to trip or fall. Faintly, she wondered if Ash had bothered to wait for them, though upon emerging from a sudden darkness she saw him shivering but still with a big grin on his face.
“Dawn! You scared us, we thought we might have l-lost you further d-down.”
Knowing he was probably trying to hide the fact that he had made a mistake to come out here, and that he was just as cold as anyone else made her silent. He knew he should have waited, and she knew she could have convinced him, but neither did what they should have done, so as angry as she could have gotten, as she could be, she wasn’t. They were here now, freezing, and had a little while to go so might as well suck it up and stick to it because walking back would just take longer.
“Where is P-Pikachu?”
She glanced around, not seeing the yellow ball of energy anywhere. Though Ash quickly snatched a pokéball from his backpack and waved it around before making sure he tucked it away and zipped his backpack back up.
“It was to cold, so I had ‘em go back in his pokéball.”
As her lips felt frozen together she resorted to just nodding her head as she huddled with her two friends beginning to walk up the steep cliff side together.
I-It’s not p-possible..
Her limbs were frozen, it hurt to move any inch of her body. Feet aching worse with each step as she trudged through the snow, that seemed to be never ending.
The blizzard has j-just gotten w-worse.
As if mother nature decided to tell her she was right, another harsh wind smacked her in the face sending her stumbling backwards. Brock, having caught her many times the wind took a turn for the worse, grabbed her again and pulled her up in front of him, afraid to lose her a second time.
“W-we’re gonna d-die up here.”
She bit out, hugging herself as she closed her eyes, letting Brock guide her as he would put his hands on her shoulders every so often to guide her in the right direction.
“D-don’t be like that Dawn, we’re practically almost there.”
Brock was a saint throughout all this, for she felt like screaming, crying, and giving up all in one fluid movement. Her hopes had been thoroughly crushed, stepped, and stomped on as she leaned forward and felt herself falling.
Ash noted this and quickly grabbed her forearm yanking her back before tucking his hands back into his sleeves as he squinted through the whipping wind.
“N-Nurse Joy warned us about t-the s-snow s-storm, and we still went!”
She snapped, sending an annoyed glared over toward the shorter male, who had decided to put them through this. All thoughts of taking some of the blame from him, knowing she could have convinced him to stay back, had been washed down the drain with that last few lashes the wind whipped out at them.
“S-shut up! I didn’t h-hear you c-complain, D-Dawn!”
The equally annoyed male, shot back as he pulled his hat down further to try and block the lashing wind from smacking him in the face.
As her lips parted to make a retort, Brock already knowing where this was going to lead to, spoke first.
“Stop it you two, Nurse Joy only said that the weather would be a b-bit colder then usual. I don’t even think the n-news cast would have predicted this s-storm.”
A part of her felt horrible for starting the argument that Brock, the saint that he was, had to get involved and not only that, hide the fact he was freezing just as well to make the fear lessen.
“They’re g-going to look for p-people r-right? I mean they can’t just l-leave everyone who h-had come out here r-right?”
Glancing back at Brock who managed to smile and nod his head, confirming her question she felt a small knot in her stomach unwind.
T-They have to look for u-us and everyone else who decided to g-go up the m-mountain.
How long had she been hearing this god forbid cracking noise? It was like when you got the ringing in your ears after hearing something so utterly loud, but just twice as annoying and it seemed to get louder every time she heard it.
“Does anyone else h-hear that c-cracking n-noise?”
She glanced at her two friends, hoping that she wasn’t going insane through this storm.
“I-I hear it t-too.”
She glanced at Ash, who had finally looked up and was graced with a smack of cold air gnawing at his face. It literally felt like the pieces of your skin were being frozen and chipped off every time you went to wipe a new layer of frost off your face.
“I wonder w-where it’s coming f-from.”
She glanced back at Brock, his speech was making her uneasy, his stutters were becoming more often, and that only led to one thought.
We ARE gonna freeze up here!
Panic stricken she took a few clumsy steps forward and landed flat on her face, shivering from head to toe as her two friends lifted her frozen limbs off the ground.
With a final crack, it suddenly sounded like a stamped was heading toward them, freezing all of them in their tracks as they slowly glanced up to the uncontrollable cracking with the roar of what sounded like a stamped of pokémon.
It was then and only then, that they saw it. The mass amount of snow that had built up during the blizzard race down toward them at an alarming rate.
“Avalanche! Run!”
Not needing to be told twice, she forced her frozen limbs to break from their ice casing as she strained every muscle in her leg to get herself moving through the thickly piled snow. The fear of being pulverized by the snow washed out any embarrassment she felt when running lifting each leg high up like she was marching through a thing of tires with her legs spread apart.
Brock and Ash seemed to be handling the running a bit better, for they had longer legs then she did. The roar of the snow seemed to be getting closer and it sent adrenaline pumping through her veins at an alarming rate as she forced herself to move faster and only resulted in ending up being clumsy as she tripped over her feet. It took a few good yards for the two to notice that their third party wasn’t following them, and they whirled around to find her struggling to stand up.
“Dawn!”
They both yelled as they watched her frightened face look up at them.
“My foot is stuck!”
Her voice cracked, she was on the verge of crying as her two friends treaded through the snow attempting to race back for her as the cracking seemed only a few seconds away before it happened.
It happened so quickly too.
She stood there above the snow, attempting to remove her foot from wherever it had managed to wedge itself, when the snow washed over her form like a tidal wave, engulfing her petite self completely.
Their hearts stopped as Ash raced toward his friend almost swept into the landslide with her if it hadn’t been for Brock’s firm grip on his forearm.
“We have to get Dawn!”
Ash was desperate, as he continued to try and fling himself into the snow as if that would help the situation.
“Ash! We can’t, if you go too it’ll just be worse!”
Brock’s voice of reasoning sounded like a pained cry, as he felt like he had just witnessed the death of one of his very best friends.
“DAWN”
Ash’s voice echoed through the valley but was swallowed never to be heard from, much like their best friend’s cries as she felt the rush of snow slam into her.
