Pitch Black

Sam opened his eyes to pitch blackness, the kind of dark that seemed to absorb sound, rather than intensify it. Every inch of his body ached.

"Dean?" No answer. Sam rolled over and crept across the cave floor, one hand out. "Dean?" His hand finally found a warm arm. "Dean?" He slid his hand up to Dean's neck, seeking a pulse. Nothing. Then, as grief threatened to overwhelm him, a tiny flutter of breath against his hand. "Dean?"

"Sam?"

"Hey!"

"Told you." Dean groaned, Sam could actually hear a smirk under the pain.

"What?"

"Told you cave trolls were trouble."
