A/N: A Halloween special that I’m gonna enter for the Sonic Fanfiction Contests run by Mystery001. Please note that there are Sonic Chronicles spoilers in here, but I will mark them out so you can dodge them, you won’t miss any of the story.
Hope you enjoy!
“Hmph, what a pathetic occasion.”
Shadow was sitting on a chair in Club Rouge, it was October 31st.
Halloween.
“Oh come on Shadow, lighten up.” Said Rouge, finishing the touches on her vampire costume, it was definitely very fitting for someone like her.
“Oh come on Rouge, what other point is there to this holiday besides an excuse for kids to dress up and get candy?” said Shadow, mimicking Rouge’s tone of voice.
Rouge finished putting on her black lipstick and shuffled around in her black dress. Seductive, just like most female vampires were thought to be like. Her wings were wide open and popping out of her dress, and her naturally pale skin and fangs really made the part.
“What can I say Shadow? Halloween is just a time for fun and releasing a bit of your dark side.”
“You’re dark enough without that stupid outfit.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“I still can’t believe you’re shutting Club Rouge for this.”
“Hey, I said I’d take Cream and Tails out for trick and treating, and I intend to keep that promise.”
“How much did Vanilla pay you by the way?”
Rouge growled slightly. “I’m not that much of a gold-digger Shadow, kids are kids.”
“Hmph.”
Suddenly two knocks came from the door. Rouge jumped while Shadow didn’t even look. Rouge went over to the door and slowly opened it in an overdramatic way.
Shadow rolled his eyes.
“Trick or Treat!” shouted two kiddie voices.
Once again, Rouge jumped back in fake fear to the two costume wearing kids, one rabbit and one fox. They were of course Tails and Cream.
Tails was wearing a mummy costume, with bits of the tissue used to make it hanging off, and one of his eyes covered up. Cream was wearing a black pointy hat and a cute witch’s costume, completed with stars and moons. Both were holding small buckets which already contained candy.
“Ooh, look at you two! You’re so adorable I can’t resist giving you a treat!”
“You look great Rouge.” Said Tails as Rouge put some candy in both of their buckets.
“Yes, you look gorgeous Ms Rouge.” Said Cream sincerely, her smile widening with each candy being dropped into her bucket.
“Thanks you two, I can tell that we are gonna be scaring people for a long time tonight.”
“With the quality of that costume, I’m not surprised.” Muttered Shadow.
Rouge growled while the two kids finally noticed Shadow.
“Oh hey Shadow!”
“Mr Shadow, are you gonna come with us and be a vampire like Ms Rouge?”
“Never mind him kids. You know what they say: “When fun comes-a-knocking, Shadow goes running!”
“Excuse me if my idea of fun doesn’t involve dressing up in an outfit that suits a medieval gigolo more than me.”
Rouge sighed and looked at the crumpled vampire costume he had brought for Shadow, now it was just laying on the edge of the club bar.
“You sure you don’t wanna come?”
“Yes.”
Rouge sighed again and started to open the door before turning quickly back to Shadow.
“Now remember, if you hear a knock at the door, take that bucket and give them some sweets.”
Shadow looked at the horribly cliché pumpkin bucket and nodded silently.
“You can use anything here, including the TV and radio I brought down from upstairs; you can even get drunk if you want.”
“Thank you.”
Without another word, the three went out the door and into the cold night.
Shadow sighed slightly. Peace at last. He turned on the radio.
“And continuing on with our Halloween special, we now play…”
Shadow changed channel.
The presenter on this radio channel was laughing a witch.
He changed it again.
And again.
And again.
“Damn it all!”
Shadow turned off the radio, breathing heavily.
Was there any escape from this damn thing?
A knock at the door, a slap of the forehead.
Obviously not.
Shadow slowly got up and took the candy-filled bucket along with him to the door, which he promptly opened.
“Trick or Treat!” three voiced shouted at him. Shadow once again sighed.
“Hello, Team Chaotix.”
Shadow examined all three of them.
Espio had this grey makeup all over him, with splotches of red here and there. It was obviously a poor attempt at a zombie.
Vector on the other hand, looked much more convincing. He was obviously the Frankenstein monster, with the two fake nails on both dies of his neck and his tattered costume.
Charmy was the simplest one out of the three, opting for a simple vampire costume and fangs.
“Hey Sonic, it must’ve been hard to put all that paint for that disguise.” Said Vector.
“Excuse me?” Shadow asked, his eyes turning a darker shade of ebony.
“Hey, you’ve even got the voice nailed down!” chimed Charmy.
Shadow seethed. Him being compared to that faker was just…Preposterous!
“Guys, that isn’t Sonic. That’s the actual Shadow.” Said Espio, already taking a few steps back.
“Nah it can’t be, Rouge said he would be in a vampire costume.” Retorted Vector.
“Vector….look.” said Charmy who was also starting to fly away.
The croc looked to see Shadow, his face dark with anger, and a Chaos Spear glowing from his hands.
“Oh…right….run!”
Shadow watched as the three ran until they were black dots on the low moon in the horizon, and then went back into the club.
Another half an hour passed, a few human groups knocked on the door, but nothing Shadow couldn’t put up with.
He had finally found a decent radio channel to listen to, one that specialised in metal and rock. It was better than nothing.
Another knock,
Here we go again.
Shadow got up, the bucket in hand and opened the door to see none other than Amy Rose.
The Sonic fan girl had two devil horns on her head, a devil cloak and held a trident in her right hand.
“Hey Shadow.” She said that in the cheery sing-along voice that was second nature to her.
“Hello Amy.” Shadow promptly gave her some candy, which she put in her bucket.
“So are you enjoying yourself alone in this club?”
“Yes thanks.”
“I would’ve thought a dark and macho man like you would have relished the chance to scare the people “inferior” to him.”
“I scare people already, going out would achieve nothing.”
“Do ya really think so?”
“Yes, and besides, with a costume as bad as that I doubt I’d be the one doing the scaring.”
Amy ignored the insult. “Yeah, I’ve definitely done my fair share of scaring.” Amy held up her nearly full candy bucket to prove her point.
Shadow nodded unimpressed. “Well see ya later.” He started to close the door before Amy blocked it with her trident.
“Hey you should check out Sonic’s costume, it’s brilliant!”
“Wait, he got a costume of himself? That certainly is scary.” Said Shadow with sarcasm oozing from his lips.
“Very funny smartass, anyway you’ll probably laugh when you see it. I know I did!”
“I won’t hold my breath. Enjoy the rest of your Halloween.” Shadow closed the door while Amy shouted “See ya!”
Shadow sat down again and looked outside. The moon was low and glowing just as brightly as the stars accompanying it. Yet they had a strangely eerie glow to them, it definitely fitted the occasion.
Another hour passed, and surprisingly there were no knocks. Shadow was able to sip on his champagne and listen to music in peace.
Three knocks.
Shadow sighed and once again picked up the candy bucket and went towards the door.
He gripped the knob and turned it and looked outside.
His jaw dropped.
“Oh dear God…”
“Hey Shadow!” said that overly happy and all too familiar voice of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Shadow looked at Sonic. Something wasn’t right. Sonic’s arms were now beefier and more hairy, as was his whole body. His snout was longer and his hairy fur had gone into a dark shade of blue. His shoes were bigger and ripped at the edges. This was definitely a startling costume. His gloves had now been replaced by claws.
Yet it all resembled Sonic’s old look in a weird way.
“Earth to Shadow, anyone home?” asked Sonic again.
Shadow went out of his stupor and addressed his counterpart.
“Sonic, what the hell…”
“My Werehog costume, do ya like it?”
“Are you sure that thing is costume? Last time I checked, costumes don’t talk.”
Sonic snickered and Shadow heard a zip being undone, and an all too familiar blue hedgehog pop out of the Werehog costume.
“Hey Shadow.” Said Sonic.
Shadow looked at Sonic, then the Werehog costume that was now crumpled on the floor, and then back at Sonic. The blue hedgehog snickered again.
“I guess you want me to explain.”
Shadow nodded. As far as he knew, Sonic never accepted any money for saving the world countless times, he didn’t have the IQ to make something like this and Amy never mentioned anything about making it…so how the hell did he get it?
Sonic smiled at Shadow’s obvious confusion and began explaining.
“Well y’see, I promised I would take Amy around Station Square to help her find costumes for herself and Cream…”
Sonic the Hedgehog wasn’t happy.
He looked at Amy Rose was dragging him around the floor at Station Square and its many clothes shops. They had been here for three hours and the hero longed to be free of her relentless grip and into the open world, running and feeling the air in cheeks,
But when she promised to pay for an all you can buffet at the Chilli Dog Stand, he had to fulfil his end of the bargain, not doing so would just be plain rude.
But even know she had paid for a damn good meal, he was starting to get the feeling it wasn’t worth it.
After two hours, Amy had found a devil costume for herself, and an admittedly cute witch costume for Cream. But now she was searching for a costume for HIM.
Sonic had explained (or rather protested) that he had some vampire fangs spared at Tails house like every year, where he would run around to each house and do some trick and treating.
But Amy had been insistent on him having a change of pace this year.
“I still don’t know why we can’t just walk there without you dragging my arm like some kind of toddler dragging a doll around.”
“Because if I don’t you’ll probably just run off, either by yourself or dragging me along with you.”
“A promise is a promise; I’m not that conceited Amy.”
Shadow chuckled. “I didn’t know you were capable of those kinds of words, Sonic.”
“That’s what she said too, anyway…”
Amy dragged him into another clothes shop, he didn’t look at the sign. He didn’t care. All he wanted was to get outta here.
“Hey Amy, long time no see.”
Amy finally let go of Sonic, who then thought of running off and laughing maniacally into the freedom, but he decided against it. He got up to see Amy embracing a squirrel behind the counter. She was wearing the staff clothing along with a couple of earrings.
That was new.
Amy turned to Sonic. “Sonic, I’d like to introduce you to a long childhood friend of mine, Sally Acorn!”
“Please to meet you Sonic.” The squirrel smiled and held out a hand. “Amy’s told me a lot about you.”
Sonic took the hand and shook. “And she’s told me nothing about you, it’s odd isn’t it?”
The squirrel looked surprised. “Really?” She looked at Amy. “Is that true?”
The pink hedgehog blushed a bit and shrugged.
*Chronicles Spoilers here*
Sonic smiled. “Don’t worry; Amy does do some silly things from time to time, like making up imaginary boyfriends…I’m sure she was just too busy chasing me to tell me about you.”
“Chronicles Spoilers End*
“Anyway…” said Amy, who was desperate to change the subject. “Sally, I know you just got a job here, but this clothes store seems to have a lot of Halloween costumes. Do you have any unique Halloween costumes that would good enough for a hero?”
Sally thought for a moment then lit up in excitement.
“I have just the thing…”
“…And that’s how I ended up with this thing.”
Shadow nodded. “I still can’t believe why you’re wearing it.”
“I think it fits well enough, it’s supposedly very High Street stuff.”
“There’s High Street stuff for Halloween? How idiotic.”
“I forgot you don’t like Halloween do you? Any chance of you changing your mind?”
“About as much chance as Rouge dating a bat named Brian.”
Both chuckled.
“Well anyway Shadow, I better get going, the night is still young and I got a lot of candy to catch.”
Shadow nodded and proceeded to walk back into the club.
“Hey Shadow!”
Shadow turned around just in time to see an egg go straight into his face, causing its entrails to splatter all over him. The shock of it also made him unable to dodge the other two eggs thrown at him by Sonic, whose grin was widening with each hit. He took out two more from inside his costume and threw them, but Shadow dodged them.
“Later buddy!” Sonic jumped into his costume, zipped it up and ran laughing into the night.
Shadow stood there motionless, yolk slowly falling off his fur.
He had just been tricked by that idiot.
No way.
He thought of chasing after him, and forcing a Chaos Spear up his butt.
But as thoughts circulated in his head, he realised there was a much better way to get revenge…one that fitted the occasion.
Smiling darkly, Shadow went into Club Rouge, and put his plan into motion.
About an hour later.
“Ha-ha, I really got him!”
Sonic was now running around Station Square and into the city in his Werehog costume, and he was having the time of his life. The stars were out, the night was peaceful and the moon had risen above him to give any onlooker an eerie sight.
And most of all, he had given Shadow a trick he’d never forget. That was a bonus.
He was almost sorry that Knux was too busy protecting the Master Emerald; otherwise his day could’ve been even better.
Oh well, you couldn’t win them all, he was now content with just running freely and letting the Halloween night pass with the light of the moon on his back.
It was about 8.00pm, about another hour left for gathering up some candy.
He looked at the ground and saw that his shadow had gone. That was weird; he could’ve sworn the moon was in the sky right above him. He stopped running and the Werehog wearing hero looked up.
Inside the costume, Sonic’s eyes widened.
A figure was falling towards him fast, its cape blocking the moons light, and before Sonic knew it, he and his costume were grabbed and tossed into the air.
“Whoa!”
Sonic rolled a few times in the air, before being caught by the mystery assailant. Sonic then found out he was high above Station Square.
Sonic struggled to try and get out of the forceful grip of the high flyer, but to no avail.
“Look pal, I’ve had fun being your play doll, but could ya let me go?”
“Oh but the fun has just begun.” Said a dark and raspy voice that Sonic didn’t recognise.
“Whaddya mean?”
“I like to play with my victims and get the adrenaline pumping through their blood. It tastes better that way.”
Sonic froze. He liked to drink blood, and that meant only one thing…a vampire.
“L-look pal, you don’t wanna drink my blood, its, err…sour.”
The supposed vampire looked at Sonic and gave a toothy grin, showing off his fangs. The moon temporarily blinded Sonic, so he couldn’t see his facial features, but his fangs were as clear as day.
“Hey man, how about we just call this a truce. Between Werehog and Vampire, between monsters of horror?”
A laugh.
“You honestly think that I would fall for a trick like that, Sonic the Hedgehog? I have been watching you for ages, waiting for the time where I can drink the blood of a famous hero like yourself.”
“I have never been fond of stalkers.”
Another laugh.
“Let me assure you Sonic, I will be a stalker that you will never wish to meet again!”
And with that, Sonic found himself being dragged around the air at breakneck speeds, he screamed, but it wasn’t because of the speed.
It was because they were now above the ocean outside Station Square, and even though the moon was out, it was still very deep. Sonic whimpered in fear of falling in and drowning.
As if reading the mind, his capturer mused to himself.
“Oh, the things I could do! Maybe I could drown you and then suck your blood and leave you to sink to a watery grave…or perhaps I could make a hole in that Werehog costume and take you right to the bottom and watch you drown before feasting later…oh the possibilities!”
“Look man, I’m begging you. Just let me go, or at least give me a quick bite so I can die quick.”
“Let you go? Okay then.”
And with that, the vampire released his grip on Sonic, sending the hero falling towards the dark and wet abyss below.
“!”
Sonic closed his eyes, waiting for death to swallow him up in its wet embrace, but instead he felt another tug at the Werehog costume and found that he was being held just above the water.
“Oh, I nearly blew it then, didn’t I?” mocked the vampire, who was holding Sonic once again.
Sonic was frozen in fear and unable to answer.
The vampire laughed once again. “You seem to be a bit shy Sonic. Perhaps I should talk to you face to face…”
He tossed Sonic around and reached for the back of the Werehog costume’s zip. He pulled it up and saw Sonic almost covering his eyes. The vampire turned the costume over, making Sonic fall out and hang onto the costume for dear life.
“Please…don’t.” said Sonic, tears of fear starting to stream down his face.
The figure smiled and spun Sonic around, causing him to scream as his grip started to loosen, and after one final pull into the air by the figure, he was sent flying into the air with a scream.
The figure smiled and dropped the costume into the water while waiting for Sonic to fall level with him. Once he did, he flew towards Sonic and caught him, and sped towards the beach of Station Square. Once there, he grabbed Sonic’s head and drove him into the sand. He then let go and jumped back, waiting for Sonic to get his head out.
The hero struggled a bit before comically popping his head out of the sand and landing on his butt. He looked at the figure and backed away, with no where to run.
The figure went towards him, and his face became visible thanks to the light of the moon.
Sonic’s eyes widened.
“Shadow?”
The ultimate life form smiled with his fake fangs and costume, along with the Jet Shoes he used to fly and held up a fist before starting to glow red.
“Thank you for giving me a good Halloween. Sayonara…Sonic the Hedgehog.”
“No wait…”
“Chaos Blast!” shouted Shadow, and a red wave of energy covered the surrounding area.
And with that, Sonic was sent flying into the air above Station Square and out of sight.
Shadow smiled, his revenge had been rather successful, but he still had one more thing to do before the night was over. He activated his Jet Shoes again and flew into the night sky.
In Station Square…
Rouge yawned. They had been going for nearly two hours now, and yet Tails and Cream were still as energetic as ever, running from house to house getting candy. In fact, she only got a reprieve from running when Cream stopped because her paws ached. It was 8.30 pm, and only half an hour before Cream was due home.
“Ms Rouge, would it be okay if you could carry me the rest of the way?”
Rouge desperately wanted to say no, but seeing her cute little face just stopped the word being uttered. Holding back a sigh, she went towards Cream.
“Rouge, you know better than to pick defenceless girls to be your victims.”
Rouge looked up to see none other than Shadow dressed in what he called the “medieval gigolo” outfit floating down towards them.
“Shadow!?” all thee exclaimed.
“Hey guys, how has your night been?”
“But why…?” asked Rouge.
“Yeah, you were so insistent on staying inside, why did you change your mind Shadow?” asked Tails.
Shadow smiled. “I’m sure Sonic will explain everything.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Shadow simply smiled and walked over to Cream.
“Do your feet hurt Cream?”
“Yes Mr Shadow.”
“Would you like me to carry you?”
Cream nodded, and in one swift motion, Shadow tossed her into the air and caught her in his arms. He then put her on his back so she could ride piggyback. Cream giggled wildly and clung on to Shadow, he turned to Rouge.
“So where to?”
“All the doors here on this street and the next one.”
He smiled and started walking from door to door, with Tails alongside him the three gave shouted at each door, generally making the person who answered the door jump in surprise.
Rouge never thought she would see the day.
As it approached nine o’ clock, the group went to Vanilla’s house so they could drop off Cream and Tails; the latter was staying the night. Afterwards, it was just Shadow and Rouge on the long walk back to Club Rouge; both remained silent for a while and let the calm breeze go through them.
“…Thank you.”
Shadow turned to Rouge. “What for? I didn’t do anything.”
“You came. You swallowed your pride and you came. That was so sweet of you.”
Feeling a blush, Shadow just shrugged. “It was nothing really; someone just taught me what Halloween was all about.”
“And what is it about?”
He smiled. “Having a bit of fun and releasing you’re a bit of dark side.”
“I have to meet they person who taught you that.”
“Don’t worry; I’m sure he will shout about it for days to come.”
Rouge smiled then stopped walking with a sly smile on her face. “Mr Shadow, my feet hurt, could you please carry me home?” she said with a pretty good Cream impression.
Shadow turned to her and smiled while rolling his eyes.
“Are you really that lazy?”
“You haven’t been running all night after two hyperactive kids.”
“Give me one good reason why I should.”
“I won’t let you stay the night.”
“Oh big whoop. I’ve stayed out in the cold night plenty of times before.”
Rouge huffed. “Fine you insensitive jerk,”
“You’re supposed to be a brilliant and athletic government agent and thief, and you can’t handle a bit of running?”
Rouge just pouted past him, he smiled.
“Gotcha.”
With one swift move, he grabbed Rouge and tossed her into a bridal style hold.
“What are you doing?”
“Thanking you.”
“For what?”
“Putting up with a grouch like me.”
Rouge laughed. “I wouldn’t have it any other way with you.”
“Thank you.”
And with that, Shadow activated his Jet Shoes and the two flew into the Halloween night sky.
A/N: So there’s my first crappy oneshot, and my first one to fit an occasion, I hope you enjoyed reading it.
Also, see if you can spot the reference to a oneshot by one of my favourite writers, Mystery001. Read his “Overprotective” fanfic then this one. Whoever spots the reference gets a cookie.
See ya later!
