Able to Forget

I saw you today,
smiling with your friends,
and my heart skipped a beat
at the sight of your face.

I bit my lip
and turned away,
memories from the past
rising to the surface.

My friends shook their heads,
understanding the look on my face,
took my hand
and lead me away.

Away from your hugs,
away from your smile
away from your eyes
away from the thought of us.

--

The day dragged on,
and I became occupied
with other situations
during the day.

My friends led me
through the mall,
grins on their faces,
and the same on mine.

We tried on clothes,
pigged out in the food court,
ran through the stores,
and laughed our heads off.

Now I’m here,
in my room,
sitting on my bed,
thanking God for my friends.

And you know
what I just realized
a few seconds
ago?

I hadn’t thought about you the whole day.

About your hugs,
about your smile,
about your eyes,
about everything between us.

Your face didn’t randomly
pop into my mind,
unlike how it
usually does.

I didn’t have the urge
to call you
and to listen to the
soothing sound of your voice.

I didn’t have a sudden craving
for your arms around me
and for you to whisper
that everything was all right.

I totally forgot you,
not even realizing it,
and let go for a day,
living life like I should.

I think I’m finally
getting over you
and everything
that went on between us.

I’m done reminiscing,
and it feels so good
to finally know
that I’m able to forget.
