The words tore her heart in two and Kagome vowed she would never forgive Sesshoumaru for this. She watched in agony as the hurt and betrayal entered Inuyasha’s eyes and knew that no matter how well she justified her actions, it was still all her fault. Tears coursed down her cheeks as he turned bitter words against her, letting her know that his trust and faith in her was forever broken.
She was now alone and about to enter the den of the lion once more, this time without the belief that all was well.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered as he glared at her. Two sets of amber eyes, both like the other, stared at her, one in contempt, the other with triumph. Kagome had never understood how much she could hate than she did at this moment.
“Inuyasha…” she murmured as he stomped off, unwilling to hear her entreaties. She had made a promise to him, and broke it, just as she had made a promise to Sesshoumaru. Why she kept that one, she wasn’t sure, but her honour would do no less, even it meant breaking the heart of the one she wanted. This was her exchange for Inuyasha’s life. This was the deal she made with the devil to guarantee that Inuyasha would come to no further harm by his hands.
“Sesshoumaru,” she seethed, turning her ire onto the demon lord. “I have served my purpose here and as far as I’m concerned, I’m done.”
“You will only be finished when I say so,” he reminded her, sheathing his sword.
“I will no longer be your jester. You can say anything you want, but it won’t change how I feel.” She turned on her foot and ran in the direction of Inuyasha, determined to repair the damage her false statements had caused. “Don’t follow me,” she warned. “The next time I see you will be your last.” She ran from sight, hoping that she had enough strength and energy left to catch up with the hanyou, and to tell her story.
And as she left the field she swore he could hear him laugh, the word ‘try’ echoed in the wind.
