Dark, cold and creepy. That is the best way to describe the forest that two hikers are in. It was the middle of the night, several hours after one of the hikers thought it was a good idea to go exploring when the sun was setting. Now they were lost. They were cold. They were tired. They were scared.

One of the hikers collasped from exhaustion. The other hiker immediately noticed this and rushed to his aid. "We should just set up camp here for tonight," advised the hiker who was still standing.

The exhausted hiker climbed back to his feet and replied, "The ground is too uneven and rocky here, we would never get to sleep if we camped here."

"The ground's been like this for hours. I don't think we are going to find a better place to rest. Anyway, look at you! You're a mess! You don't look like you have the strength to walk any further. We have to rest here, Travis"

Travis looked around at the surroundings, "Look, let's just walk for another minute. If we don't find anything, Nathan, we'll just set up camp. Okay?"

"No. We are not going to find a better place to sleep. If you go ahead, fine! But I'm exhausted and I'm not going to walk anymore." Nathan sat down.

"Alright, I was just going to check over there." Travis pointed at the top of a nearby hill. The hill wasn't that large but he hoped that it was large enough to get a view of the nearby area.

"Fine, go check yourself. I'll just start setting up the tent here." Nathan stood back up and opened one of the bags he was carrying. He turned it upside down and poured the contents onto the forest floor. Travis turned around and began to walk towards the hill.

Nathan was searching through the pieces of the tent, looking for the instructions. He found a piece of paper in it and read it. The problem was, it was too dark to make out anything that it said. He walked back over to his bags and pulled out a torch. He pushed the on/off button. No light came out. Dead batteries. Nathan groaned. He wished he had packed spares.

He looked over to where Travis is. Or was! He was nowhere on the hill or in sight! "Travis?" He began to walk over towards the hill. "Where are you?"

While he was still walking, he heard a faint voice. It sort of said, "down here." It was Travis. "Travis? Where are you?"

"I'm down here!" yelled Travis. Down? Where was he? Nathan kept walking, not looking at where he was putting his feet. "Wait, don't move!" Nathan stopped. "There is a hole naer you. I fell in it!"

Nathan looked around for a hole. He saw leaves scattered around and some roots sticking out of the ground. He eventually saw a patch on the ground of nothing. "I think I found the hole." He walked towards it. It was a hole. The hole wasn't that big, about the size of a tire. He looked down it and he couldn't see the bottom. "How deep is this thing?"

"Pretty deep. I'm not sure of exactly how deep it is, but it's not deep enough to kill you."

"Can you see anything down there?"

"No, it's pitch black in here, find something to help me get out!" Nathan turned around and searched for something, anything, to get his friend out of the hole. Since it was extremely dark, this task was very hard. For a few minutes, he was on his knees, scrambling around, looking for some useful to use to get his friend out of the hole.

He eventually remembered that he had some rope back at the campsite. He stood back up and he walked over to 'tent' and he found some rope lying in his bag. He collected it and carried it back to the hole.

He knelt down next to the hole and yelled, "I found some rope!"

"Toss it down here!" Nathan grabbed one end of the rope and fed the other end down the hole. Suddenly, he felt a tug on the rope. Travis had grabbed onto the rope. Nathan pulled up. Travis was heavy. That didn't help the situation. Since Nathan was tired, he fumbled a bit but eventually his friend emerged from the hole. Travis collasped next to the hole.

Nathan said, "okay, we camp here, got it?" Travis nodded. They both struggled to get on their feet but when they did, they walked back to the campsite.
