Two Days Later
It was Monday. The sun shone brightly through the blinds. The light went straight into Nathan's sleeping eyes and as it was barely penetrating his eyelids, he woke up. He groaned and sat up from his sleeping position. He looked at the blue flute object that was on his bedside table. He had tried to play it over the last few days but every note he made sounded awful, and everyone in the household complained about the noise when he played it.
He looked at his radio clock which was right next to the flute. Nathan groaned. It was 7:30. He had to get up because he had school at 8. He had a lot to do in the morning and because he didn't do anything to prepare for school the previous night, it was going to be a busy morning.
The Following Takes Place Between 7:30am and 8:00am
Events Sort of Occur in Real Time
Nathan quickly climbed out of his bed and went straight to his closet. He opened it and immediately pulled out a green shirt and blue jeans. This combination of clothes is his favourite. He put the shirt on and struggled with the jeans. He pulled them up to his waist and he pulled the zipper up. At least, he tried to pull the zipper up. After a few tries, he sucked in his gut and he finally got the zipper to go up. He did up the button and he was changed. Now he had to pack his school bag.
He looked around the room. His bag was nowhere in sight. He groaned and began to pull open drawers to find it. He had pulled open about three drawers when he remembered that he left his school bag downstairs, because of the hiking trip him and Travis had a few days ago. He walked to his door, opened it and walked out towards the stairs.
He got to the stairs and walked down them. When he got to the bottom of the stairs, he took a right turn and went towards the front door, the spot where he thought he left his bag. He got to the door and the bag wasn't there. At this moment, his mother walked into the room. Nathan turned around and asked her, “Do you know where my bag is?”
She answered, “I think. Have tried the back door?”
Nathan remembered that he must of left his bag there because his got inside the house from the backyard after the trip. He walked off in that direction.
When he got to the back door, he found his bag lying in front of it. He walked over to it, picked it up and walked back upstairs to his room.
Nathan closed the door behind him and tossed the bag onto his bed. He unzipped it and took out all of the camping gear that was left in it and he went to his desk to grab his books. He grabbed the books and loaded them into the bag. He zipped the bag up and the tried to think of what he needed to do next. Okay. I've gotten changed and packed my bag. Oh! I forgot to pack my lunch! He walked away from the bag, out of the room and downstairs to the kitchen.
When he arrived at the kitchen, he opened a cupboard that contained his lunchbox and he grabbed it. He walked to the pantry and opened it, expecting to find food that he could bring. He was disappointed. Again with perfect timing, his mother entered the room. She said, “Sorry. I'm going shopping today so we are all out of food. I'll give you money so you can buy lunch at the school.” She grabbed her purse and opened to and pulled out a five dollar bill. She handed it to Nathan. Nathan went to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
He got to the bathroom and he brushed his teeth. He went back to his room and sat on his bed. He was ready for school. Suddenly his phone rang. He answered it. It was Travis.
“Are you ready for school? I'm waiting outside your house.”
“Just a minute!” Nathan closed his phone and picked up his bag and he put in on his back. He quickly glanced at the flute. He grabbed it and he put it in his bag. He then quickly walked to the front door to meet Travis.
Nathan opened the door and he was greeted by his friend Travis, who said, “Hi.” They began to walk towards their school together. It takes about ten minutes to get to the school from Nathan's house.
They didn't talk for about a minute until Nathan opened his bag and pulled out the flute. Travis saw this and said, “Oh, you're taking it to school?” Nathan nodded. Travis continued and asked, “Have you tried playing it yet?”
“Yeah,” answered Nathan, “but my family kept getting annoyed by it. Every sound I make from it sounds awful.”
“Show me.” Nathan out the flute to his lips and blew. The resulting sound almost made Travis lose his sense of hearing. He quickly told him, “Put it away!” Nathan stopped blowing into the flute. Travis continued. “Maybe it's broken.”
“Could be.” Nathan put the flute back in his bag. They continued to walk to school.
After a few more minutes of walking and silence between the two, the school came into view. They were within a minute of the school before Travis got distracted by store. He said, “I'm going to go in and get something to eat.”
Nathan replied, “C'mon, we're almost late as it is.”
“It won't take a minute.” Nathan sighed and waited outside as Travis went inside.
Soon after, Travis walked out of the store, grasping a packet of potato chips in his hand. They began to walk to the school.
This was when they heard a ringing sound coming from the school. It was the bell. They didn't make it in time. Nathan said, “Great, now we're late.”
“We can still make it if we run!” said Travis and he put his chips in his bag and he ran off towards the school. Nathan followed suit.
