DETAINED FROM BIRTH

A crashing noise woke Gaia with a start. She tentatively opened her heavy eyelids but couldn't make sense of where she was. When she attempted to sit up something was strapping her down to the bed she was lying on.

"Careful there sweetie, not too fast." A gentle voice warned. Gaia turned her head to face a gray haired nurse with twinkly eyes smiling down at her. The nurse was fiddling with the straps on the side of the bed and eventually managed to loosen them.

"Where am I?' Gaia croaked as she looked around "and what am I doing here?'

"You're at the campus infirmary, dear. They brought you in last night." The room was nondescript with long blinds covering the windows. There was an IV machine in the corner and a rather bland painting of a yacht on the wall beside it.

Gaia glanced at the clock. 7:18! "Hold on, it's seven in the morning right?"

"It's evening, Gaia. You've been out for a while."

She continued to stare at the clock in confusion while the nurse busied herself with rearranging the machinery in the room. Memories from the previous day seeped into Gaia's mind. ...... Bob Bentley.....the bag of lollipops.... While she was struggling to remember what had happened, there was a soft knock at the door.

"You can come in. She's awake." The nurse called.

Kim's head poked through the door. He looked worn out, his normally perfect hair was drooping down around his face and there were bags under his eyes. His lips curved into a timid smile but Gaia could tell that it took some effort to put it there.

"I'll let you two talk. Push the button if you need anything, I won't be far." And with a reassuring smile the nurse quickly left the room, shutting the door softly behind her.

"How are you feeling?" Kim asked. He was sitting on the chair beside her bed now, his features didn't look any better than how they'd looked afar off.

"Confused, but fine I think." came Gaia's reply "I'm trying to remember how I got here."

Kim stared at her intensely. "You were... you were at Kelly's house last night." His voice broke on the last word. He turned to face the wall opposite his chair as if he was afraid to meet her gaze.

Kelly's house? What the hell would I have been doing there? Then it hit her. She remembered Jasmine's sweet voice on the phone. Mama got an invitation to a rainbow date. It was a very pretty card...She winced as her mind replayed the unfortunate events that had taken place.

"Will..." she whispered remembering."We were attacked last night. Where is he?"

Kim's voice became even lower than before. It was overshadowed with guilt. "Will was badly hurt, Gaia. He's in intensive care at the hospital, we don't know if he will make it."

They were silent for a long moment.

Gaia's numb body hit the mattress. History was repeating itself all over again; she hadn't been able to keep anyone safe. Even her confession hadn't been enough to keep Will from harm. She should have been detained from birth. Tears began to cloud Gaia's vision. No! She refused to believe that Will was dying. Just the thought of him not being around was heartbreaking, what was she going to do if .... she didn't even allow her mind to go down that path.

"I was totally convinced that he was the murderer...." Gaia started and realized that Kim was still there beside her. She turned to see him gazing at the wall, his eyes blinking rapidly. "When I entered the room you were holding his hand and I panicked....I thought that....you had both..." He let his sentence remain unfinished. Tears were visible in his dark eyes as he stared unseeingly at the wall, deep in thought.

"..Bob Bentley.....kept a journal.......Real sad, sick stuff......" Gaia just lay there while Kim continued his monologue. "Kept track of Will last couple of years."

Gaia could feel the walls of the room slowly closing in. She felt trapped. She wanted to run away and never return. Kim became silent again; reminiscing in the past.

"Will...he...he loves you." Kim said choosing his words carefully.

Gaia was suddenly struck with a wave of overwhelming emotion. The pain became almost unbearable. She quickly shut down her feelings and stared up at the ceiling. Kim had turned his gaze onto her awaiting a response.

After a while he sighed. "I'd better go tell Agent Malloy you’re up." He slowly stood; realizing that now was not the time to push. "I'll come back and see you later."

Gaia couldn't bring herself to say goodbye. She felt that if she opened her mouth the tiniest bit she would lose it. She stared at the door after Kim had left wishing for the millionth time that she had never been born.

AN: A rewritten ending to Fearless FBI. Starts off just after Gaia blacks out beside Will.
