Prologue
I was arriving home to my apartment after a long grueling day of waitressing. I was tired and hungry, and it didn't help the fact that I didn't have much money to get groceries. I guess it would be another night of Ramen Noodles. I thought to myself. As I turned the corner, I ran up the flight of stairs trying to escape the rain. I stumbled on the last step trying to close my umbrella, but I caught myself before I could cause damage. I went to open my door and saw another bright yellow note. Rolling my eyes, I grabbed it, unlocked my door and walked into my stingy little apartment, where I threw the note on the counter with the others that I have received over the week.
I went to turn the lights on...Nothing. Shit...Here we go I guess I won't have soup tonight. I grabbed the flashlight that I had left out just for this type of instance knowing that it was only a matter of time before the electricity was going to be turned off.
I then made my way to look through the cupboards for something to eat. I found cereal, but quickly decided that probably wasn't healthy enough and then moved onto some cans of soup, past a box of macaroni and cheese, when I saw a piece of bread left in the loaf. I quickly grabbed that and a jar of peanut butter and made my way to the couch with a glass of milk.
I plopped down with my bread and peanut butter and started to spread it over the one piece I had left. I quickly took a bite and it tasted so good. After I finished it I was still hungry, but slowly my body was getting used to not eating as much. Which I was sure wasn't a great thing; especially when you were four months pregnant. I rubbed my belly and decided to rummage through the cabinets and find some crackers to eat. I grabbed the jug of milk deciding to finish it before it went bad and sat back down on the couch. Boy these would taste great with some cheese.
I looked around my dingy apartment. The only light was coming from the street light as it hit the dirty lime green carpets that lined my floors. It showed every stain from every person that had ever lived here. The sad thing was I rarely walked barefoot on these floors. God only knew what was lying down there. I wondered how I was so unfortunate to end up here, in this place. It actually felt suffocating at times. I didn't mind it so much when he had lived here with me. At least I had been distracted from the filthiness of it all. But now that I was alone, I really saw this place for what it was…a pit, hole in the earth. I had no idea if my next place would look as nice as this. I laid my head back on the couch and tried to just stare at the ceiling…as I calmly ran my hand over my small bump.
