815's & Heartbreak
A/N: This story is a Jack&Kate Fanfiction, so I do not own the characters or the show.
Its tells the story of Jack&Kate's life after they returned to the island. Its based on what we know about the show and spoilers we get for the upcoming season. So I keep it as realistic as possible.
The title is based on the new Kanye West Album "808's & Heartbreak".
And "815's" refers to the Oceanic Six.
I really hope you'll enjoy reading this fic while waiting for January 21th, 2009 to arrive.
Have fun.
Chapter 1
"I'll be home in a few hours. Still got some files lying on my desk I've to sign. You don't have to wait up."
"You actually think I would wait up for you? I really like talking to you Jack but you know I-"
"Shut up, Kate. I know you'd wait up for me." He said and grinned into the phone. Knowing he was right.
"Yeah. Just so you can help me with the dishes."
"I've heard you say that lie so many times Kate. I'm starting to think you believe it."
"Night Jack." Kate said and got a chuckle as a reply.
"Night Kate." He said with a big smile pressed on his face and let out a happy sigh as he pressed the red phone button on his cell.
He stared at the files lying in front of him, grabbing his pen automatically while his mind doze off to Kate. Just like all those other late nights. Or days for that matter.
Ever since they got rescued Kate had been living with him. She'd told him she could live on her own, get a nanny for Aaron and start working to keep her mind off things. But Jack had called her plans off the moment she'd shared them with him. Telling her she could move in with him. Spend some time with Aaron while he's at work and look for her own place, no hurry, no pressure. After some arguments Kate had finally agreed. Only making the arguments out of policy because she knew she'd miss Jack like crazy if she wasn't able to see him every 24hours. And to be honest, Jack hadn't been completely selfless either when he'd suggested the proposal of her living with him. Since he knew he would probably be arrested as 'Stalker of Miss Katerine Austen'.
So 2 weeks later and they were still living together. Jack had returned to work soon after their return. Giving her the time to get to know Aaron. Honestly, Jack was happy he could be at work from time to time and only came home when Aaron had already gone to sleep. He loved him as his own but for a reason he didn't felt comfortable around him.
And then there was Kate, who he felt completely comfortable around. They hadn't really talked about their relationship since the rescue, since her kiss with Sawyer. He'd assumed it was too difficult for her to talk about it. So he didn't brought it up. Just Friends. It should be enough, he kept telling himself. But couldn't help but wonder how good they would work together. Specially after phone calls like these and the other 410² times they'd flirt and teased each other.
Jack came home later then he'd told her. Closed the door of his large loft and quietly tiptoed around the corner, to the kitchen. Where he didn't find any unfinished dishes. His mouth grew into a happy smile, which was interrupted by a sound coming from his couch.
"Hmmz- Jackz." A sleepy voice muttered from the black leather object. Jack turned his head and walked towards Kate.
"Told you, you'd wait up." An amused Jack said and leaned against the wall on the opposite of where she was lying.
"Shut up." She said with a warning smile and got up. She wrapped the blanket around her and walked over to Jack. Closer than normal, probably because she'd just woke up and couldn't orientate very well. Jack followed her right hand in the corner of his eyes, watched it rest upon his shoulder. Feeling her eyes search for his, he gazed in her direction and for a moment they locked eyes. She leaned in closer, , he could hear her breath crashing in his neck to his cheek, he could smell the lavender shampoo she had used this morning, he could feel her tender lips brushing against his cheek as she kissed him goodnight.
"Night Jack." She whispered, wrapped the blanket around her a little more, turned around and walked away. Pretending like she didn't know the effect she had on him. Leaving a stunned Jack leaning against the wall in his dark living room.
A bright light shinned through the white curtains of his loft. Small footsteps tickled on the wooden floor. And the sound of a soft female voice singing a lullaby was the only thing that could be heard.
Kate walked towards the refrigerator, grabbed Aaron's milk and left it on the corner of the kitchen table as she grabbed his bottle. All doing so while Aaron was on her arm, playing with the curls of her dark brown hair as she sang him a song.
She stopped her actions as she saw a dark figure lying on the couch. She frowned her eyebrows before she walked towards Aarons crib and laid him down. A disappointed look appeared on the boys face but he remained silent.
She walked towards Jack and kneeled down in front of him. She didn't move for a while, she just kept looking at him. Watched him sleep. She remembered doing this on the island a few times. She'd never seen him so peaceful before and she wished one day she would wake up next to him and he would look at her the way he did when they were alone, which wasn't often. But when he did, it felt like the whole world disappeared.
Kate didn't know where to look, so she decided to keep focused on his lips. Thinking how long its been since she'd kissed them. And how much she misses kissing them. And how much she wanted to kiss them again, she wanted it so damn badly that it almost hurt her physically to be thinking about it. Why were thinks so complicated?
She remembered every single thing about the kiss, how he had looked at her, how he had tasted, how she had rubbed her hand on his face while he rubbed his on her lower back working his way under tank top. God, she remembered every beautiful thing about it. But somehow she didn't remember the reason why she'd ran away. She could figure out why, she could understand why, but right now she didn't remember why.
The more she thought about the kiss, the more she felt her hand working its way towards his sleeping face. When it was only inches away she stopped its path. Waiting a few seconds, deciding if it was a smart thing to do, to touch him.
Her brain switched off as always around him and she laid her hand on his face. Slowly sliding her fingers along the lines of his scurf, no compass needed to find his lips, the top of her thumb sliding past his mouth. When he suddenly opened his eyes. Kate didn't notice at first, so caught up in the moment, but when she felt his lips curl into a little smile she looked directly into his eyes. Fearing that she'd been caught and she had been.
For a few seconds they kept looking in each other eyes. Neither one of them wanted to break this moment. Captivated by its beauty. Now she had know. Someway or another she thought that this was the way he would look at her if they woke up together. With the same eyes filled with the same amount of love.
The moment was broken when Jack's eyes caught the alarm clock behind her. He jumped up and grabbed his pants on the opposite couch.
"Dammit." He muttered while a confused and hurt Kate got up from the floor. "Why didn't you wake me up before!" He asked her, little annoyed, as he put on his pants.
"I-" Kate started but figured he didn't had the right to be angry at her. "Why didn't you set your alarm clock like always?" She shot back at him. They weren't fighting, not yet anyway, but just bickering like they always did. Somehow it felt familiar. And comforted the both of them.
Jack knew damn well why he'd forgotten. So stunned by her actions from last night he hadn't been able to keep himself to the routine of setting his alarm clock and going to bed. His mind kept wandering off how it would be to just grab her and kiss her.
But he decided not to tell her the truth.
"I just forgot. Damint. Give me my shoes will you?" He asked her, the annoyance hadn't left his voice.
"The black Armani ones?" Kate asked and without an answer she grabbed them.
"Thanks." He replied automaticly as she handed him his shoes. Fingers touching for a moment. Jack cleared his voice and pulled at his end of the shoes, but she didn't let go just yet and pulled back. Letting him know she wasn't pleased that he was using her to get his frustration out. He looked at their hands both holding his black Armani shoes and his eyes worked their way towards hers. He saw she was annoyed and hurt and she saw his face soften.
"Thanks." He said in a much softer tone this time and gave her an amused smile. Kate decided he wasn't going to kiss her or anything to make up and she knew she couldn't stay angry at him for that long so she laughed and let his shoes go.
"Why don't you just stay home today Jack?" She asked as he bend down to put on his shoes. "We could go out, take Aaron to the park. You know how much he loves being around –"
"I can't." Jack cut her off. "I got a big surgery today Kate." He said as he tried to knot his shoes.
"Can't you just reschedule?" She tried again.
"I've got lives to safe Kate." He said and threw his shoelaces in the air. Giving up.
"God you even weren't this busy on the island." Kate said, this time really annoyed with the way he was acting.
"I wasn't able to save everyone on the island either." He shot back. "You of all people must know that! You remember me every day of it!" He spat out, his voice on the edge of shouting as he grabbed his suitcase and shot the door.
And Aaron started crying.
So what did you think?
You know what to do.
