Shattered Ones

Steps were quiet that night… thoughts were not…

Intentions were deadly… hearts were not…

Hearts were broken…love was not…

She stepped, quietly, silently, out of her window and out of the house, into the empty streets.

The Forest of Death… where everything started…and ended…

The curse mark…

Sasuke…

He was the avenger, the sole survivor of a clan that would forever go down in history… love…was of no use…

It did not save his soul from Orochimaru…it did not save his brother, who died in front of his eyes…

It did not keep him from leaving Konoha…did it?

No.

And so he left, throwing her aside…

He walked softly, slowly, regally, that night, not making a sound…

Konoha…where everything started…and where it was going to end.

She stopped.

He stopped.

Sasuke

Sakura

A smile, soft and sad.

A glimmer, affectionate and quick.

“Sasuke…” Warm, inviting…

“Sakura…” Cool, acknowledging…

Pause…

He began walking.

She followed.

“I love you.” More than you know.

“I know.” I wish I could, as well.

Step, step, step…

The air whooshed around them, tossing moonlight across their features.

She smiles, savoring the moment of peace and warmth in his company.

He breathes in, valuing the serenity and safety in her presence.

“You are well?” she sighs, not sadly.

“I…” he pauses, unsure. She looks at him, waiting for an answer.

“I’m here.” She said, supportive.

“Yes.”

Ninja from Konoha come from all sides, trapping her in their net of death.

Confusion… “Sasuke?”

Alarm… “Sakura!”

A sword missed, piercing her, impaling her…

“Sasuke!!” Help me.

That scream…

She cannot fend them off by herself, not with the wound…

…that was Sakura…

“Stop, NOO!!”

He did not see the one who tried to kill him, only heard her warning…

No matter, they are all easy for the curse mark…

It has never activated itself so easily before…

“SAKURA-CHAN!” Naruto…

She falls to the ground, clutching her bleeding stomach. He kneels, unsure of his control…the curse begs for blood…but, Sakura…

“What’s…happening?” His thoughts are clouded, hazy, Naruto screaming in the distance, Sakura bleeding to death…

She looks up at him through pain-clouded eyes. “Sasuke.”

“I-…” her wound bleeds faster and faster…her life spills out of her… “What do I do…?”

She smiles, and the hole melts into her stomach again, whole. She sits up, touching his face tentatively.

His thoughts clear.

Memories…Itachi, revenge, curse, Orochimaru, mother, Naruto…Sakura…

He is frozen, silent in his internal pain, brought by the curse.

“Why…?”

His eyes, hard but unsure, look up into green…gentle, but broken.

“Why won’t you ever tell me anything…?”

The spell cracks

“It…is none of your concern…”

“SAKURAAA-CHAN!!” Naruto…

“I will not stand by and watch you tear yourself apart” Eyes fill with liquid crystal “…we’re here to watch…”

“They don’t watch…they stare at me…” Monster, traitor…

“Sasuke…”

“Sakura.”

Orange approaches, running for his team mate.

“Thank you…for everything…”

She smiles through the gems of sadness sliding down her face. “I’m so in love with you…don’t leave me…”

Naruto screams again.

Sasuke glances towards the voice, then at Sakura. He looks down, at their intertwined hands, surprised. He must have grabbed it when the curse seal…

“I am suffering now because I have these ties…I’ve lost everything once…I never want to have to see that again…”

“Take me with you…give me your pain…”

He looked at her, willing to take his suffering from him, gratefully.

“I…” there are no words, so he says her name “Sakura…”

She looked at the direction of Naruto crashing through the bush, then back at Sasuke. The tears streamed. “I…what…?” Naruto, Sasuke, Naruto, Sasuke… “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do…Sasuke.”

He crashed through the trees into the clearing. “SAKURA-CHAN!”

He used a jutsu, disappearing from sight and reach. “AHHHHH!”

She couldn’t feel him…she couldn’t see him… “NOOOO!”

Dawn broke out, shattering rays of light across the forest. Everything is still…nothing is truly living.

Petals dropped from a flower. Sakura watched, numbly, traces of tears still on her cheeks.

From Sound, he watched a drop of dew collide on a flower, lifelessly, thoughts of her on his mind.

Sun illuminated their faces, illuminated each other.

Illuminated their future.
