Summary
A young Argonian by the name of Nightshadow led a normal Shadowscales’ life until HE came into her life. He was just so cruel and mean. He made her a slave and made her work to the ends of the world. Only daring changed her life...........
Shadows of Darkness
The sun had started to set and I suddenly felt very hungry. Just as I was wondering how far the next city was, an enormous gate loomed in front of me. I walked up to the two guards near the gate.
“Ummm, excuse me sirs, could you please tell me where the nearest in is, please? Pretty please?” I put on my best girly voice and hoped they would fall for it. They did.
“Oh yes, little miss. There is one very close by.” They gave me directions and I politely thanked them. Just as I was about to leave, I heard them break into an argument about who was better. Humph. Stupid Imperials. I turned away and walked towards the inn they had told me about.
A little while later, I was in the inn bargaining with the innkeeper. I bargained with him and told him I didn’t know about the Empire because I had just arrived here from Argonia. And he bought my story. I guess some here are too stupid to tell the difference between right and wrong. Oh well, their loss. He gave me a key to my room and I gratefully rushed off. Nothing would be better than a quick wash and a nice long sleep after the day’s activities.
I finally scrambled onto my bed and promptly fell asleep.
“Yes, I believe you wouldn’t make it now, even if you ran,” the someone whispered. I immediately whipped around to find the source of the noise, and came face – to – face with a black clad man. My muscles immediately froze up as I realised that this man was dangerous. When I say that I mean that I was scared out of my life, my muscles were shrivelling up from fright and a whole lot of other crap.
“Who are you and what do you want?” I asked, trying to keep the quaver out of my voice.
“There is no need to be that rude, Shadowscale.” I jolted at that. How did he know I was a Shadowscale? “Let me introduce myself. My name is Lucien Lachance, a Speaker for the Dark Brotherhood and you, Shadowscale, you are Nightshadow.”It was more of a question than a statement although I knew, and he knew too, that he already knew my name.
“How did you know that?” I asked, dumbfounded.
“Ahhh. Sithis and the Night Mother know many things, Nightshadow. One thing you might know is that Shadowscales are Argonians born beneath the sign of the shadow and are raised as assassins for the Dark Brotherhood.” My jaw dropped. That was true, but how did he know? Unless.....unless.....he was from the Dark Brotherhood itself? He saw my expression and smiled darkly. It was so frightening to see a smile so mirthless and cold, yet naturally. “I take it you do know. The Night Mother has sent me to recruit you into our Family, The Dark Brotherhood. But here, like all new recruits, I give you a choice.”
Ah. So that answered all my questions. He was from the Dark Brotherhood. I pondered about what he had said for a minute. Oh, he had said he was a Speaker for the Dark Brotherhood before, right? Yeah, he did say that. “Just remember, Nightshadow, Shadowscales are raised for us, and that makes you one of us.” This weirdo Speaker is right, I thought. I am a Shadowscale and therefore I am meant to be in the Dark Brotherhood. But he is giving me a choice. So what should I do?
“Nightshadow, you should know now that you are hunted by the Imperial Legion. They found out yesterday when your Master’s relatives went to visit his house and found him dead and you gone. I’m taking a guess that they figured out that you were somehow connected to the murder and now you are an outlaw. We offer you a new family and friends. Not only that but you will be safer with us.” Lucien stated firmly. I gasped in shock and stared at him. “Your choice Nightshadow. I must leave now but if you want to join us, follow the road north and from there, find the Inn of Ill Omen. You will find a man by the name of Rufio there, kill him. Oh, and one more thing, this is a gift from the Dark Brotherhood. Your old kitchen knife is not for the likes of the outside world, it’s for cutting up vegetables and fruit. This is the Blade of Woe.” He produced a black knife out of nowhere and handed it to me. I scrutinised it carefully, and I saw that the word “Woe” was carved into its handle. The Blade of Woe, how ironical.
Lucien turned to leave but looked at me for the last time. “Nightshadow, you are like us. Join the Dark Brotherhood and we will treat you as one of us. Remember, the Dark Brotherhood are not just assassins, we are a family.” I blinked and he promptly disappeared into the shadows. I lay down on my bed and stared down at the Blade of Woe. It was so beautiful, yet deadly.
Now back to deciding. Hmm. So, I’m an outlaw. Yay....more running from the guards. So exciting. Anyway......if I choose to stay with the Dark Brotherhood then I won’t have to run and I’ll have a home, a place to stay. But in return......I’ll have to kill? Pfft. Not a problem. Hmm, maybe I should stay with the Dark Brotherhood. And to add with that, I’ll finally have a family. Yeah, a family of killers. But.........Okay, okay, I’ll go.
I sneaked into a store and looked around to see if anyone saw me. No one. Good. After all, I still remember being the best of my group at Stealth. Ah, let’s see. Oh goodie, here’s a horse and a nice, sleek and fit black horse at that. I quickly unknotted the rope from the wall and dragged the horse after me. Well, maybe didn’t drag the horse, it kind of followed me. Same thing.
“Hey you! Argonian! Get back here and give that horse back or I’ll call the guards!” The shopkeeper yelled. Damn. I’d been spotted. I frantically scrambled onto the horse and urged it forwards. The black horse whinnied and immediately broke into a run.
“Holy crap!” That horse was damn fast. I was almost thrown off its back as we turned a corner, and finally onto the road. I stole a glance behind me as the thundering of hooves was heard. Great. Company. I urged the black horse to go faster and faster did it go. It was almost flying as we lunged forwards into the forest and disappeared into the shadows.
I walked towards the bushes and used the Blade of Woe to open a peephole for me. Oh. I’ll have to thank that horse now. A rabbit. Food. Hooray! I went around the bush and gently patted the horse and it tossed the rabbit in my face. Ewww. It tossed its head and walked to the pond when I went to gather some wood. When I thought I had enough, I promptly lit a fire and started to roast the rabbit. A second later, Shadowings came running and ripped a leg off the rabbit. Oh well. I owed it THAT much at least.
I made a makeshift shelter and crawled inside.
Shadowings carefully came towards the wolf’s carcass and gingerly kicked it with a hoof. When the horse confirmed that the wolf was dead, it whinnied happily and started to lick me. I brutally shoved it off and it gave me the Evil Eye. I stared daggers at it and Shadowings backed off with its head down. Satisfied, I eyed the wolf carcass and decided that it was too icky to eat. I was about to give a leg to Shadowings when I remembered that horses were herbivorous. Then why the hell did it eat that rabbit leg? I thought. I heard a crunching sound from behind me and I was shocked to see Shadowings eating an imp that was still squirming in its mouth. The Nine! That bloody horse had fangs!
After some time I came across a hunter. Oh no. He was a Legion Hunter. That means he would know about me......but.......he hadn’t seen me yet. I nudged Shadowings and the horse broke into a gallop and we soon left the hunter behind. That was a close one, I thought. I have to be more careful in the future. Shadowings started to gallop faster and the forest soon developed into farmland and crops. We saw a few horses but none of them were like Shadowings. They are all NORMAL horses. I thought. Shadowings seemed to think the same and snorted disapprovingly at the horses. Much to my surprise, they backed off and seemed to be scared of Shadowings.
A few days later, it was as usual, Shadowings snorting in my face and me glaring daggers at it. I was preparing to leave when I saw yet ANOTHER Legion Hunter walking through the forest, no doubt looking for me. Shadowings promptly ran into the shadows and I hid behind a bush, my scaly green hide blending perfectly into the background. The Legion hunter walked right past us without finding us and I breathed a sigh of relief. As soon as he was out of sight, Shadowings came to me and we started towards the road again. I saw a shape on the horizon and I squinted at it. I gasped. The Inn of Ill Omen..........
