This story starts off in between Jeopardy and Hiatus and so becomes an AU fic.

I have posted the first 2 chapters together because I feel the first one ends a bit too much like a oneshot

Anyway hope you enjoy

BTW Jenny never cut her hair in this fic

Jenny sat in silence on the drive home, her head leaning against the window gazing out into the dark night. Every so often Gibbs looked over at her, trying to read the expression on her face, he was slightly surprised to find that for once he had no idea what thoughts were running through her head. He turned his attention back to the road, although his mind was elsewhere.

The immense relief he had felt when she had returned safely from her ordeal with Brian Dempsey was indescribable, wanting to make sure she got home safely he had offered her a lift. She had looked at him and just nodded, her gaze skimming past him and landing on the body bag lying on the cold metal slab. Remembering how much she had always hated this part of the job he knew it wouldn’t help her to be here so he placed a hand on the small of her back and led her from Autopsy, out to his car.

Stepping into her hallway Jenny turned on the lights, she knew Jethro was right behind her and heard him close the door. ‘You don’t need to stay, I’m fine’

‘No you’re not, and I’m not leaving until you tell me why’

She ignored him and moved through to her study, picking up her bourbon filled decanter that was sitting on the desk, pouring a glass, without turning round she asked, ‘Do you want a drink’

‘I have a feeling it’s going to be a long night, so yes’

She poured another glass and finally turned to face him so she could pass him it. At no point did she meet his eyes though, her gaze remained fixed on the wall as she took a drink of the burning liquid.

He tried once again to get her attention, When I said I wasn’t leaving I meant it, now just spit it out Jen. Is this because we had to shoot him’

Jenny finally looked up at him, ‘No, it’s not’, she paused momentarily, ‘You know for a minute back there I honestly thought he was going to kill me, I thought this is it, this is how it all ends’

Gibbs was shocked, ‘You can’t think like that, not in this job’

‘I don’t usually, but this time’ she sighed and rubbed at her forehead, ‘I don’t know’

‘So that’s what bothering you, nothing else?’ He looked at her waiting for a reply, knowing what it would be.

She looked up at him, her emerald eyes boring into his icy blue for a brief moment before she turned her head away again, shaking it slightly, ‘No, it wasn’t that, I realised something at that moment, that if I didn’t pull through….’, she paused again and let out a shaky breath, ‘I have no one who would really care’

Gibbs’s eyes widened in shock, ‘What do you mean? Of course people would care’

Jenny let out a bitter laugh, ‘No, it would have made the news, people would talk about the tragedy of it all. The first female head of an armed agency murdered, they would say what a waste it was. Yes people would come to my funeral, hell who knows maybe there would be a few tears, but then everyone would go home and by the end of the day would have moved on. You know I don’t even have a next of kin, God knows who they would give the flag to, that would be an awkward moment’

Gibbs moved closer to her not quite sure what to say, he let her continue, ‘I always thought that I would marry, have kids and build a proper family. But no I decided to put my career first and now that’s all I have, it’s all I’m likely to have’

‘None of that is true Jen’, he put his glass on the desk and took Jenny’s out her hand and placed it next to his, he wrapped an arm round her waist and pulled her in close his head resting on top of hers. ’More people care about you than you obviously think do’

She let out a slight sob, ‘That’s not my real point, I’m alone Jethro, I even walked away from you, the one person I ever really…..’ she stopped awkwardly and pulled herself out of his embrace, moving away from him, ‘I think you should go now’

Gibbs stepped towards her, ‘No, finish that sentence Jen’

Jenny looked at him, anguish in her eyes, ‘Why? I ruined it, nothing is going to change if I say it out loud’

‘Just say it’

‘Fine!’, she yelled at him, slightly overwrought now, ‘I love you, I always have, I always will, walking away from you in Paris was the worst decision of my life and I have spent everyday regretting it. Seeing you everyday and knowing that no one else I’ll be with will ever measure up is killing me inside’

Gibbs moved even closer to her again, ‘If you felt like this why didn’t you tell me, I said I missed you on your first day’

She let out a small laugh, ‘Yeah because it would look really great if on my first day as Director I began an affair with one of my agents, and for all I knew you were being flippant’

‘Well I wasn’t, I meant it, every word. I still miss you Jen’

Jenny looked up at him, he was standing right in front of her now, hand cupping her face, his thumb caressing her cheek, ‘I miss you too Jethro’

He smiled at her, ‘You know we can change that’, He moved in closer and kissed her lips softly, tilting up her chin and sliding his other arm round her waist pulling her close. Her arms wound there way round his neck as she deepened the kiss, opening her mouth to allow his tongue access, moaning slightly as he explored every corner. She pulled away panting and looked up at him, ‘Jethro if this is just a one night thing, then I don’t want it’,

‘It’s not a one night thing Jen, I want you back in my life for good’, He leaned in to kiss her again, his hands slid down her and began to undo the buttons on her blouse, lowering his mouth to kiss along her collarbone. Jenny let out a low moan and tangled her fingers through his hair pulling him closer into her. He slid her blouse down her shoulders and let his hands move downwards behind her thighs and lifted her onto the desk, smirking at her gasp of surprise. He moved his head down again, kissing the swell of her breasts, her hands managed to find their way to his shirt tearing it open and throwing it across the room, fingers tracing patterns across his back and chest. Jethro quickly undid the buttons to her trousers and slid them down her legs, he quickly made his way back up to her mouth, kissing her so passionately he actually took her breathe away, his hands exploring the curves he once knew so well, reacquainting himself with all the places that had her gasping. Jenny ran her hands down his chest until they encountered his belt, she fumbled slightly trying to undo it, she shoved his trousers off in one deft move. He quickly undid the clasp on her bra, and pulled away slightly so he could he could pull of her panties. He then pulled her into him, she could feel him straining through his boxers the knowledge he needed this as badly as she did made her impatience for him grow. ‘Jethro, please, no more waiting’, she moaned against his shoulder. Her heel trying to force down his boxers as her nails dug into his back. Unable to wait anymore he pushed his boxers off and hooked her legs around his waist, fingers gripping onto her hips, he caught her lips in a desperate kiss as he thrust into her. Jenny let out a small scream of pleasure as she met his rhythm, Jethro groaned as he caught sight of the look of ecstasy on her face, her hair wild about her face like a halo. He tilted her hips slightly and she lost control, her muscles clenched around him causing him to follow her over the edge, spilling into her. After a minute or so, he had enough breath back to lift her over to the sofa. They lay there entwined in each others arms. Gibbs kissed the top of her head and told her, ‘Definitely not just a one night thing’
