Author's Note: Yay for another chapter of w00tness! *dead silence* Yeah..I thought much. Oh well, I think Joker is going to pop into this chapter because I really want to work with him. O.o I mean, type him? You know?...Yeah. Bruce will be here too, I mentioned Harvey and Rachel last time so I guess I'm kinda doing good. Meh, I don't know. Oh in the last chapter I used a bit from Devil May Cry, if any of you know what that is. It's a game, manga, anime, all that good stuff. It's about demons and humans all that stuff but I used part of it and I must say. I didn't write that. xD The author of DMC did, but I thought it would be good within this story. So I should thank them but I don't know how to write to them for I don't know anything. I thank the DA people's signatures. Some of them seemed good to use. xD That sounded Joker-y. So yeah, this is my Christmas present to you, maybe if this thing will last long enough, I'll make a Christmas down the road. O.o Somewhere...around there.
Now I'm going to be clear, I'm going to to go within Heather and Chase's minds. =D Heather is funny and you will expect to laugh at her. Chase well at first he's going to be shy and to himself but once he knows Rachel more he'll be a little bit of a smart kid. xD Heather is like in her teens and Chase is four. I will draw these kids because I love drawing kids. Lol! So yeah...just wait.
Disclaimer: Seriously, again? For the last time, I don't own a pixel of Batman. Now if that pixel had Joker in it I would totally try to buy it. But sadly, I'm broke so I can't. So don't sue me for trying to claim this as my own. For you lawyers out there, I DON'T OWN A SINGLE PIXEL OF BATMAN...(sadly not Joker either...). Only the plot, Chase, and Heather belong to me. So...if you steal them, I steal Joker, deal? Thought not. I also, hereby, don't own Devil May Cry, Batman, and any other crap that I might steal from something else. xD
Chapter 2 It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives. The act of dying is not of importance, it lasts so short a time.
~Samuel Johnson
Rachel walked down the streets with a sleeping boy in her hands in Gotham. It seemed ironic for some reason and she just let that feeling pass her. Like many feelings. Some like the man behind the Batman's mask, who was provoking them to come out in the first place. Rachel would have shaken her head to get the thoughts of him out of her head, if it wasn't for the little boy's head on her shoulder. It was close to night and she decided to walk in a quick pace to her apartment for she swore that someone's gaze was looking at her. She couldn't turn to look at the person or thing that was staring at her for the boy would wake up and cry for his parents.
Once in the safety of her apartment, she let the walls crush down and her guard also. Rachel pressed the button that went up to her floor and stood there for a bit until the elevator 'ding' signaling that they were where she needed to be. She sighed and lowered her eyes to the floor. It seemed she would do this when in a sad, depressed mood. Rachel then patted Chase's head and he was just sound asleep. He knew her well, for every time she was down where her brother was, she would visit him. Later on that day, she would speak with the movers to move all of Chase's things into the room that she had set for him. She put in her key and turned the lock to open the door. Once inside, she quietly opened the room that was meant to be Chase's, and then placed his tiny body on the bed.
Rachel shut the door with as much silence she could. She put her hand in through her hair and sighed. The big party that was meant for Harvey was in two days, the funeral was in like five, and caring for Chase was forever. Rachel never had dealt with a kid before and didn't want kids until her job was secured. She sighed once more and walked over towards the couch. She laid on the couch and got a blanket to cover herself from the cold. Rachel then turned on the tv, to find that once again Joker was blowing up buildings and whatnot. She sighed not knowing how people could do that but at least; no one was harmed this time for Batman came in time. Then she remember that the event for Harvey was a few days away, she looked over at Chase's new room and thought. What was she going to do with him? 'I guess I'll have Heather come with me so she can watch him.' Rachel thought looking back at the TV screen. She jumped a little when she saw the Joker's face in view. He had a scary looking face for a clown.
Rachel looked at the clock on the right side of her and find out it was late. She put the blanket on the backside of the couch and turned off the TV, stood and went to her room to change in her pj's. She put her long, brown hair in a pony tail and wore a cami with pajama bottoms. Rachel looked around her room to find pictures of her and her brother with his family. It made her want to cry but for some reason, over the years of being a lawyer, her emotions would show through. She went into her little bathroom and washed off the make-up from that day and any crap that comes in contact with your face in the day. Rachel looked out into the dark night, it was beautiful but dangerous. After a moment or two, she went to her comfortable bed and fell into a blissful sleep.
"Who gave you the nerve to get killed here?" Joker said at the dead clown body beneath him. After the latest blow up, a few of his 'minions' you could say, didn't make it out, then again he could always replace him. When he got the money out of the bank, he told them to kill each other, just to watch them turn on each other to see greed. It was funny to watch them all die off, but now he might as well keep them now for the Batman is more powerful than before. He noticed this, for he could tell. The Joker was a man that knew his surroundings, he had too or one would not live for very long. He looked at the dead clown for a bit until he put his hands in his pockets and walked away. He didn't care either way it wasn't his problem.
He walked through the dark alleyways of Gotham. He wasn't afraid like most people. The ones that would run when it was sunset because all the bad guys would come out to get them. He smirked; also someone else would come out of their little hiding spot too. 'Batsy.' Joker chuckled to himself at that and looked up at the night sky to find any sign that he would be called. Of course he would be, the people of Gotham relied on him and yet hated him. It was a funny thing really, and stupid too but he was going to give Gotham a run for it's money, though he didn't have any use for it other than dynamite and other means of torturous weapons. Like his knives, they keep getting rusty, and we all know why.
The Joker looked up at the sky and wanted to puke. Gotham needed a better class of criminal, ones that wasn't so greedy for money and power. Except that he did want the power, to be feared and to fear the unfearless. "Another quote that I need to remember now." He said jokingly to himself. The Joker decided to act giddy, and skip down to his secret hideout. Which really wasn't, just a rundown shack in the downtown part of Gotham. The 'noble' people wouldn't dare venture here unless needed to be, which at times, was never.
Sitting upon his 'throne', he was thinking of other ways to get Batsy out of his cave and was looking out at Gotham. It seemed that Harvey Dent was gaining popularity from most of Gotham. With popularity, comes power, and that would ruin his plans. Not that he had any, he just did things like the animals in the wild. They had instincts, so did he. The predator attacks the prey and it's better not to be the prey. The Joker tapped his friends together in a menacing way like the evil-doer would do in the movies. He smiled cunningly."Well now, we just have to crash a party, eh?" He said talking to himself mostly, and maybe to the little mouse in the corner too.
Joker stomped his foot and smiled to himself, he didn't know how but he will get in there. The plan to get in there, though it could change. Instincts. He just had to get more men to go through it. Joker liked them for they fear him and obey him at the same time then at the end. Bam! "Heh, heh, heh,..." He laughed out loud and thought about how good it was going to turn out.
The alarm once again buzzed into Rachel's dreams, making her wake from dreams that seemed to be better than reality. She sighed knowing that now, she has to take care of herself but also the little boy in the other room. Rachel pulled off the covers and rubbed the sleep from her eyes but she sat there more than she would have normally done. Something changed in her that day when her brother died. Rachel put her hand over her heart and lowered her eyes towards the ground. Even though it wasn't physical pain that she was feeling, it still stung like a knife to the heart. 'I have to pass it through, today is the party and I need to do things.' She said to herself and mentally shook her head. Memories replaying when she was a child and her brother there with her, playing in the grass. Playing little childish games, Rachel never knew that his day would come so close when she would never see him again. 'Maybe in the other life, but that is to soon for you, my dear brother.' Rachel sighed and looked up at the window, the sun wasn't even up. "Ugh, I could sleep just a little bit more but I need to check on Chase." Rachel said out loud and stood from her messed up bed. She went into the bathroom and did her business, came back out then went out of her bedroom.
Rachel was surprised to find him on the couch watching some early time News on the television. She walked up to the couch and bent over to find him sleeping with the remote in his hand, the blanket around him, and a small picture of his father and mother close to him. She sighed and wanted to cry really but couldn't, wouldn't do that. Instead, she smiled until she looked up at the TV. Joker doing his last video sent in. Rachel out of reflex grabbed the remote from his hand quickly then turned it off. Once more she sighed and looked back down at him. It seemed not to make a difference to his slumber. Rachel put it on the counter and started to make breakfast for the both of them, out in the living room, light started to pour in the room. It was about three days when he showed up, never did he talk and walked like he was dead. 'It will take time, I know it...' She thought to herself.
Chase woke up without his aunt knowing when he did, it was when she took the remote from his hand. Once he knew that she was away, he opened his eyes to stare at the window outside. He knew that today was the evening with the ball, and he knew all to well how they went. He hated those things, the tuxedoes that he had to wear. It was uncomfortable and unbearable for him to wear. Chase sighed without Rachel knowing once more, then he pulled the blanket off of him and wondered into the kitchen.
Rachel turned to see Chase staring at her and she kind of jumped because he was like a quiet mouse. She smiled in hopes he would too, but he only had that blank look on his face. 'I guess it's still going to be awhile.' She thought to herself and went by him, patted his head, and set breakfast on the table for them to eat. It was good but there was an awkward silence still between them. Rachel looked up once in awhile to find him actually eating his food and not playing with it like the last times. She smiled at him and continued her meal until someone knocked on the door. Rachel looked up at the clock to find it was around eight o'clock and scrambled to the door before the visitor thinks they are not awake or just leave.
She opened the door to find Heather leaning on the doorframe with her head tucked on her arm. It seemed that she was standing there, sleeping. Rachel chuckled a bit and poked her side to wake her up. It seems not to work. Rachel sighed and knew that Heather was going to do this. She requested that she could be over today to babysit for awhile so she could get her dress. Rachel once more poked her but her arm this time and it seemed to do the trick.
"Irene!" Heather yelled before falling butt first on the ground. Rachel looked at her, with questioning in her eyes, and sighed. She grabbed Heather's hand and helped her up from the floor. Heather was a slim, 16 year old teenager, and had her hair dyed black. She wore those weird Goth clothes and always had some kind of black make-up or red on the days she was wearing red with her attire or purple. Some days, like every Friday, she would have orange on or depending on her mood. Rachel knew Heather liked orange so usually when Heather was happy, she was wearing something orange on her. She had on black army boots, to where she got them, Rachel doesn't know. Heather usually put some kind of dye that made her tips a different color, to match her outfit, and it was usually up in pigtails. Her eyes were a bright blue and would usually be brighter when happy. Rachel could tell how her moods go when she just looked at her and her nails would usually match what color she was wearing today too. Apparently, today was orange day and or also called, happy day.
"Who is Irene?" Rachel asked the clumsy teen and the 'clumsy teen' looked up with blank eyes then it turned to have a bit of mirth. Heather laughed a bit and straightened out her outfit. Black and orange, it was a special day for some odd reason unknown to herself. Heather sighed and looked back up at Rachel with a smirk upon her lips.
"Irene is..." she began, her voice sounded dominating and a hint of cruelty until she said the last part of the sentence. Irene is my dream cow that I have in my dreams and I fed her feathers. It was weird..." Heather said in a different tone, more childish than anything. Rachel would have twitched but she controlled herself from doing so. She expected something coming from Heather and usually has nonsense up in her head that she would give out.
"Okay." Rachel said politely towards Heather and stepped away from the door so Heather could get in. She walked around and really didn't have to pinpoint places, for Heather already knew the place well. Times when her mother was drunk off her ass, she would lock the door and Heather would knock on the door to ask if she could spend the night. "You know how to work a microwave, right?" Heather looked at her with a 'are-you-dumb face' and then nodded yes. "Okay, I thought so just watch him but I think he is content with watching the TV or sleeping." Rachel said to Heather and Heather looked into the kitchen to find Chase putting his empty plate in the sink. "His name is Chase, if you didn't know." Heather looked back over to Rachel and smirked.
Rachel locked the door to make sure they would be safe. She could trust Heather for some reason; kids seemed to be attracted to her even though she was a bit nervous about kids. She walked down the hallway and stepped into the elevator to go down. While going down to began to think how she was going to support or help Chase in his future. Sure, his parents saved him a College account, so she didn't have to worry about that but Rachel would have to be like a mother to him. She didn't know how to be a mother towards anyone, except towards Bruce during tough times but if acting like a friend won't help anything for a little boy who needs a motherly figure and a dominating figure. She imagined Heather in German attire, back in WW2, and yelling out orders towards the little boy. Chase was hiding in a corner, withering in fear of Heather's German heritage.
"Okay, not that dominating." Rachel said sighing about that image in her head. She heard the 'ding' and stepped out of the elevator. Rachel continued her journey towards the nearby clothing store that was storing her dress. Though walking down there, she felt like something was watching her but anyone behind her walking towards their workplace would be so that they didn't slam into her. 'Oh well.' She just shrugged it off and went into the store.
Rachel knew the sizes of both Chase and Heather, so she could just look around for them. She knew what Heather would like and she would get a Tux for little Chase. Maybe a comfortable shirt with it, she knew he hated tuxedoes. She chuckled when she remembered him when he was littler that he would try to get out of it. Rachel looked around just a bit more to find the right things that they would actually want. She got Heather a red and black dress that would go mid-leg on her. She smiled for it was more like flowing out, the way Heather would like it. There wasn't any sleeves for arms, it fitted around up above the chest area. One would think it a funeral dress but it just suited Heather that way. Rachel placed it upon the register and waited for the person to look at her crazy.
"I had ordered a dress, my name is Rachel Dawes." Rachel said politely to the old lady that stood there looking at the other dress in question. "Oh that is for my teenage daughter." Rachel chuckled. She looked a little to young to have a teenage daughter but she considered Heather one. Her eyes fogged over thinking about it. Heather's mother was an alocholic and it made Rachel sick to her stomach. She shook the thought back to her mind to look back up at the old lady smiling at her.
"You look a little too young to have a teenager." The old woman said, smiling still. It caused her to smile and chuckle.
"No ma'am, I'm not but she is like a daughter to me." She said back at her. It seemed to satisfy the old woman, for she went into the back room and got the dress that Rachel ordered. She patiently waited for the old woman to come give it to her and put the dress upon the others that Rachel wanted to buy. She sighed a bit and placed her hand through her unruly hair that wouldn't work today. Rachel turned to look outside to find the streets filled with people. She groaned at the thought of walking through it. The old woman came back when she heard Rachel groan, looking out the window.
"It is a little hectic today, isn't it?" The old woman said to Rachel. Rachel turned her head back at the old woman and nodded her head towards what she said. The old woman folded the things neatly and put them in a bag that was easier to carry." Rachel grabbed the bag and placed the money on the desk. She smiled up at the old woman.
"Keep the change." Rachel added before leaving the surprised woman in the shop. Walking out required her to step in front of a few people and getting yelled at. She was used to it, for the fact a lawyer should. Now Assistant DA, you really should get ready to be yelled at, if you are not well you are in the wrong area to be working. She sighed at the man when he started to bicker at her but she just ignored him the best she could. Rachel was not so keen on holding back her thoughts but today was different and she needed to be happier and chipper. So, she let the harsh words pass by.
Walking down the street where her apartment was, it wasn't so busy there. Mostly for reasons that had to do with the Ball thing later on, so it was nice to walk in a so not crowded area for once. She smiled once she thought of Harvey in a Tux, like little Chase. Then Rachel chuckled at the thought.
Rachel was unlocking the door on her apartment when she heard a loud crash from inside. She sighed. 'It better not be that vase Harvey got me to put the flowers in.' She thought to herself walking through the door to find that it was the very vase that she was thinking of. Rachel sighed and went to the kitchen with the two little kids hiding in the corner. Heather was sitting there shaking and Chase was picking up some of the big pieces. After picking up the pieces that everyone helped with after the dark silence, Rachel scold Heather and Chase for breaking an important vase. Heather just went into a corner and stared at it like she was punishing herself and Rachel sighed at this. She didn t mean for Heather to do that.
"Heather" She started to say and then Heather looked over her shoulder with a smile upon her face.
"How can I get done with there is a party coming up tonight! She smiled at Rachel with her black lipstick and her pearly whites showing." Rachel smiled back at her and looked over to Chase to see that he was staring at them. He never said a word to her since he got here. Then again, she didn t say anything to anyone when her father had died. Well then, I guess we better get ready. Rachel said dragging Chase and Heather to her room.
Author's Note:
Yeah, I'm going to use quote at the beginning of my stories. I mean it could help you one day. I don't know.
Kendra Luehr: Yes I did write a Jokachel, I just couldn't help myself. T.T I love them so much. They are like the complete opposites so I had to write a fanfic about them. Meh, that's really the only time I've actually got a lot of time is the Holidays because my siblings ain't here. (sigh) Oh well, I guess they can overlook it, that means they are partly reading it. xD Oh thank you! I wanted to always portray a child and I thought this would be a good idea. Though I'm sad I had to kill folks to do it but it helps with the story. ;D I can't tell you why though...O.o you think it's well-written? T.T Thank you, I do actually have a speech problem, believe it or not. xD Thank you for reviewing though!
Others: Thank you for reading it, I give you that but I do need some critism or something to help me. I'm not that good of a writer and some advice would help me. Though, just the thought of people reading it, just makes me happy. I do make mistakes and it would be awesome if someone where to pinpoint those out for me. xD Just not to the point of flaming, no one likes to be flamed!
