Envy sighed while trudging along the streets of Melbourne. They call it “the city built on gold”. It has a great reputation, and everyone admires it. Yeah, right. Envy scoffed at the thought. What they don’t know is what really goes on here. Like the people. Oh yes, the people. Dirty, rotten bastards.
The green haired teen kicked a rock on their path, watching as it rolled along ahead of them. It bounced off the pavement and onto the road. Envy sighed, and resumed walking. That’s right, this city isn’t that great. Not with people like that. Envy watched a couple of teenagers across the road; who were stumbling over nothing and laughing like the drunk idiots they are.
The pale teen shook their head in disgust, and sat on the curb. The teen tightened their thin, worn coat around themselves; in a vain attempt to be warmer. Envy looked up at the sky. Winter would be harsh this year, Envy could tell.
“Look at that child there, sitting on the curb.”
“Ah, yes, the poor child. Must be a street kid,”
“Probably. Hey, is it a boy or a girl?”
“I don’t know, it’s hard to tell.”
The mentioned teen gritted their teeth. Shut up, Envy thought. Stupid women, couldn’t keep their thoughts to themselves.
“I wonder why they're out here? Must be cold.”
“Who cares? It’s not like it affects us- oh my God, look! A sale!”
“No way! Where?!”
Envy sighed in relief as the two women scurried away in search of shoes. Thank you! Envy didn’t thank God, or anyone else for that matter. There is no God. Envy leaned forward slightly; trying to keep warm.
People rushed past him, concerned only with their own lives. That’s how it should be, Envy thought, but couldn’t help but feel that everyone was walking forward while Envy stayed still; as if stuck in time. Envy scoffed at that last thought, being oddly poetic wouldn’t do the teen any good.
Envy shivered slightly at the biting cold, and tried to tighten the jacket even more. The purple eyed teen heard a slight ripping sound from behind them, and cursed. So much for warmth.
Envy heard footsteps straying from the path, approaching the curb. Envy ignored it, thinking that the person had just dropped money or something. The pale teen saw a pair of black runners enter their peripheral vision, and turned to look at the user.
‘Short’ was the first thing to enter the teen’s mind as they studied the person before them. It was a young boy, looking to be around fourteen. Although, he seemed to have the height of a twelve year old. He had long, blond hair; which was tied back into a braid.
Odd, Envy thought, not too many guys have long hair these days. What struck the teen as odd the most were his eyes. The irises were gold, and it didn’t look like he was wearing contacts. Weird for a natural eye colour, Envy mused, although mine are weird too.
The boy stared at Envy for a bit, and then sat down on the curb. Envy stared at the kid. Why wasn’t he leaving? What is wrong with this kid?!
The boy blinked a couple of times, before smiling happily. “Hi, I’m Edward. Edward Elric.”
Envy blinked, and said, “Envy.”
Edward continued to smile at Envy. Envy was starting to feel a little creeped out; no one ever payed this much attention to Envy; not without something to gain. Envy sighed. “What do you want from me?”
Edward blinked in confusion. “Want? What makes you think I want anything?”
Envy regarded him with a carefully impassive face. “Because, you have no other reason to talk to me.”
Edward suddenly smiled at him again. That damn smile. Envy felt that this person was being a little too friendly; and was starting to feel a little unnerved.
“Do I need a reason?”
Envy blinked in surprise. Of course he had a reason; why else would he be here?
“Yes.”
Edward smirked. “Well, do you have a reason for being out here, by yourself, when winter’s right around the corner?
Envy glared at him. “Actually, I do. My pathetic excuses for parents kicked me out of the house two years ago. Been living out here ever since. How’s that for a reason?”
Edward blinked. “Wow, that’s depressing.”
Envy twitched slightly. Seriously, what is with this kid?!
Edward smiled again. “Why don’t you come with me, then?”
Envy’s eyes widened, and the teen looked at him in horror. “You’re not a creepy paedophile that changes his appearance to look younger who wants to take me into his house and rape me, are you?”
Edward burst out laughing. “Of course not! I’m just offering you a place to stay, ‘tis all. I hear this winter’s gonna be the worst.”
Envy scoffed. “So I’ve heard.”
Edward regarded Envy with a concerned look. “Won’t you be cold? I mean, your clothes are pretty thin.”
The teen looked down to analyse their clothes. Envy’s shoes were falling apart, and were so dirty that the once pristine, white colour was now completely black. Envy’s black cargo pants were way too small, thin from overuse, and revealed Envy’s thin, grubby legs. Envy’s sleeveless shirt was thinner than paper, and had more holes in it than cheese does. The teen’s jacket was even thinner than their shirt, and barely covered their ribs. It had recently been blessed with a large rip in the back.
Envy sighed. Yes, the shrimp had a point. No way was the teen going to get through the winter without illness.
Envy glared at Edward, guarded. “So what? I’ll live.”
Edward regarded Envy with a sorrowful look. What the hell? Envy was confused. Is the kid bipolar or something? Going from happy to concerned to angsty in less than half a second is definitely not normal. At least, as far as Envy knew.
“You might not.” Edward’s eyes were dulled with sadness, and it irked Envy for some reason. The teen mentally slapped themself. Envy has to get it together, no way the teen can afford to fall apart now. Especially not for a stranger with weird eyes.
Envy was silent, waiting for Edward to continue. When he didn’t, Envy sighed; knowing that if answers were going to be given, questions would have to be asked. “How would you know?”
Edward looked up at Envy, surprised; almost as if he had forgotten that Envy was there. “Well, when I was eight, my brother, Alphonse, went out for a walk. He'd always had a weak body, and he was already sick at the time. He hadn't worn warm clothes, and it was colder then usual outside. When he came back, he was really cold, and he said that he hadn't taken his medication. He was shivering like crazy, and he could barely move. We tried to warm him up, but it just wouldn’t work. Mum sent him to hospital, and they couldn’t do anything either; they said he was too far gone. He died the next day. Hypothermia, the doctors said.”
Edward had redirected his vision to the cement curb during his explanation, and had a dazed expression. Envy felt a stab of pity for him, but quickly brushed it aside. “So, what? You just want to stop me from ending up like your brother?”
Edward looked back at Envy sharply, eyes alight with determination. “No, that’s not it. I heard it’s going to be the worst winter we’ve had in twenty years. And by looking at your clothes and how thin you are, you won’t make it. So, stop being obstinate and come and stay with me.”
Envy blinked at him in confusion. “Obstinate…?” The teen had no idea what half the words Edward had said meant. Obstinate? Hypothermia? What the hell did those mean?! Envy was lost. Envy hadn’t been to school since being kicked out of the house; with no way to pay the fees. So, that meant two years without school.
Edward nodded at Envy, the fire in his eyes becoming brighter. “Yes, obstinate. It means you’re being stubborn.”
Envy twitched in annoyance. Stubborn? Envy looked Edward in the eyes, and saw that Edward was completely determined, meant well and truly cared for Envy. Which is very weird, considering they had only known each other for less than five minutes. “Fine, I’ll go with you.”
Edward grinned brightly, apparently thrilled. “Great! You won’t regret it.”
Envy stared at Edward, shocked. Could people really be this…nice? Envy had never really known anyone honest, or caring for that matter.
The pale teen allowed a small smile to cross their face, for the first time in years. “Thanks, Edward.”
A/N: Well, that’s the first chapter done. This is proving to be difficult to type. Why? You’ll find out soon.
It’s short, I know, but I didn’t want it to drag on, and I have family over for an early Christmas dinner. My dad bought a $52 turkey. I watched him prepare it. It was disgusting, until I thought of it as a dissection. Then I remembered that I have to eat it, and felt a little queasy.
Ah well, I’m hungry anyway. Early Merry Christmas, everyone!
Please review and tell me what you think =D Reviews will make me write faster. Yes, yes they will.
I’m still hungry.
