Deans footsteps were slow even though it was raining enough to flood the roads. He couldn't remember the last time he'd ran for something. Well he could but he didn't want too. He could feel his cell phone vibrate in his pocket, his mom or dad probably. Castiel had brought them back too, with no reason he was willing to tell. Dean sighed.

He didn't know why they bothered seeing how he hardly ever answered the phone anymore. He didn't even know why he'd kept it really. The Impala's drivers side door opened with a loud squeak and Dean pulled himself into the car with none of the enthusiasm he'd had months ago.

He huffed as he pulled his phone out of his pocket and opened it.1 missed call stared back at him and with an annoyed sigh he flipped the phone open to listen to the message.

"Dean honey it's mom. Me and your dad are really worried about you. I know that Sammy's..."

Dean snapped the phone closed with a growl. He didn't want to hear what his mom had to say. Expeshally if it had to do with his little brother.

His little brother who'd left the passenger seat empty, the bed beside him unfilled and the little brother who'd left him all alone after the war had ended. Sammy had died when he'd had the choice to live. He'd gone and left Dean all alone in the world with a hole in his heart so big that no girl, hunt, or alcoholic beverage could fill it. The radio blared rock as Dean hit the gas and pealed out of the parking lot trying to escape much more than the rain.

Flashback

The fight was over. Dean wasn't quite sure how it had happened. One minute he'd been kicking his Lucifer possessed brothers ass with Gabriel's help and the next he was on his knees holding his brother in his arm's. He did know though that Sam had done something. Something that had let Gabriel pull the demon lord out of him and kill it.

None of that mattered though as he held his little brother in his arms and watched bloody tears run down his face. Dark brown-green eyes looked up into his and God he wanted to hug Sam tight and never let go. Dean smiled and tightened his grip a bit but not enough to hurt his brother. Because Sam looked like he'd been run over by the worlds longest train several times and somewhere in the back of his mind Dean feared that if he held Sam to tightly that he'd break apart.

"Hey Sammy. It's good to see ya again." Sam smiled a bit at his older brothers words but didn't reply. He didn't think he'd have the energy.

"He won't last much longer Dean." Dean's head jerked up and to the side. Castiel stood there in his borrowed body. If Thursday's angel was injured Dean couldn't see it.

"What do you mean he won't last much longer. He's gonna be fine he's just tired. Aren't ya Sammy?" Dean turned his gaze back to his brother and was a bit surprised to see the same sad smile his brother had worn when things hadn't been looking good for either of them. Sammy was dieing and he knew it as well as Dean did. The only difference was that Dean refused to believe it.

"The fight against Lucifer took a lot out of him Dean. He used his powers to give Gabriel an opening and he used what little strength he had left to do it." Dean shook his head. The war was over. Things weren't supposed to be like this. Sammy was supposed to be safe. He was supposed to be worn out and tired but happy that it was finally over.

But here he was dieing in his brothers arms while his brother tried his best to deny the very possibility of that happening.

"He can't. Not after all he did. Even possessed he didn't stop fighting." Dean's whole body shook and his eyes stung with tears. "Can't you do something for him Castiel? Hasn't he earned a second chance?" Dean asked as he turned his gaze back toward the angel. Castiel nodded his head and Dean felt his heart stop for the briefest of moments.

"He has earned a second chance but it is his choice Dean. He can take it if he wants or he can deny it and make another request of us." Dean could hear the angels steps as he walked around Dean and crouched beside them. He was looking into Sam's eyes as if he could read the answer in them. There was silence for a moment.

"Is that what you want?" Castiel nodded after a moment as if comferming something. "All right. I'll leave you then." Then the angel was gone. There was no flash of holy light when he dissapeared he just vanished into then air.

Dean felt himself smile a bit as he looked back down at his brother. Sam had to of agreed but as Dean looked down he felt his heart drop and his whole body seemed to go cold. There was no returning awareness or strength in his baby brothers eyes. If anything they looked duller than they had moments before.

"What did you do Sammy? What kind of deal did you make?" Dean asked his voice a shaking whisper. Sam only blink tiredly at his brother and smiled up at him. This smile was a true Sammy smile. One that seemed to light up his whole face even though it was pale as death and brightened his dull eyes and for a second Dean dared to hope. But all his hopes were crushed moments later by his little brother.

"Love you Dean."

Dean's heat could have stopped and he'd have been none the wiser. "No. No no no no. Don't say that Sammy. Your going to be fine Sammy." Tears unbidden and unwanted started streaming down his cheeks leaving hot trails behind them. "Sammy you can't do this again. You can't leave me. Sammy. SAMMY!"

A terrible scream tore itself from Dean's throat as he cradled his brothers body and cried for what felt like the first time ever. He never noticed when his parents or Bobby showed up for he had eyes only for the brother that had died in his arms.

End Flashback

Blistered hands ran over his eyes as he stared out of the dashboard window. Dean wasn't sure how far he'd driven to get away from the rain but he'd gotten away from it and that was all that mattered. If he was lucky maybe someone would call him with a job. He needed a good hunt to get his mind off of life for a while.

He'd lost track of how many he'd been on since that day and every once in awhile he wondered why he was still hunting at all. It wouldn't be long though before his brain answered that question for him usually against his will. He hunted because it helped him feel closer to his brother. Even after his brother had died Dean still couldn't seem to let him go. Hell he'd even went and visited some of the old hunting grounds just to remember.

He hated to admit it but some of his best times had been spent hunting with his little brother. He'd even went to Stanford and visited Jessica's grave, he'd even left her flowers, violets if he remembered correctly. Of course all that had happened after Castiel had showed up and given him a very good talking too.

He'd spent nearly a month so pissed off at his little brother for leaving that the mere mention of his name had made him want to break something. Now though the anger was gone and only grief and lonleyness were left.

Flashback

Dean sat unbeleavably still as he watched the cars on the road go by. He really wanted to throw his bottle of Jack at one of them but then he wouldn't have anything to drown himself in and he'd be wasting like ten dollars.

"What do you want Castiel?" Dean asked with a sour note in his voice. He really didn't want to talk to the angel at that moment. All he wanted was to be left alone with his drink to brood.

"You've started down a dangerous road Dean?" Dean fought the urge to growl. How dare he quote that line to him.

"What do you care you son-of-a-bitch? Why does what I do now matter to you?" He could feel Castiel's gaze on the back of his head. He knew that the angel was giving him annoyed yet pitting look.

"I'm keeping a promise I made."

"Who to Anna?"

"No to your brother."

Dean nearly chocked as Castiel's words registered in his head. Dean turned to look at the angel so fast that the bones in his neck popped due to the movement.

"What did you say?" Castiel let out a sigh as he walked around the bench and sat down next to Dean.

"You brother's final request was for us to watch over you and your family. He wanted to be sure that you would be kept safe after he died." Dean's body shook as a far to familiar anger began to take hold.

"So instead of saving his own life he tells you to be sure we don't screw up and get ourselves killed?"

"Among other things. Yes, Dean. That was your brothers request." Dean clenched his fists in anger. He should have known that his stupid little brother would ask for something like that instead of asking to be saved.

"Well then my little brother was a dumb ass." Dean said unaware that his voice was stedaly rising in volume. "My stupid little brother who thinks we'd rather be safe than have him."

"It was his choice Dean."

"Then it was the wrong one! What gives HIM THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE OUR SAFTEY OVER OUR HAPPINESS!"

Castiel sat and watched Dean for a moment before answering.

"He chose your lives over his Dean. Had he chosen to live it wouldn't have been the kind of life he'd have wanted. Let alone the life he wanted for you and your parents." Dean looked at Castiel for a moment confusion written all over his face.

"What do you mean?"

Castiel sighed and a sorrowful look filled his eyes. "Your brother was broken in so many ways Dean. Lucifers possession did more damage to his body then you think. Had he chosen to live you and your family would have spent the rest of your lives having to care for him."

"What are you talking about Castiel? Tell me the truth."

"Then listen to me Dean. You forget about all the injuries inflicted on you brother while he was possessed. He'd have been paralyzed from the neck down. In a matter of days he'd have lost the hearing in one of his ears as well as his sight. He'd have spent the rest of his days paralyzed and unable to see and barley able to hear. Then there's the damage that his powers caused his brain. Dean your brother didn't want to live like that. He didn't want you to live like that. He knew that if he lived you'd have spent the rest of your life caring for him and not living. It was his gift to both you and himself."

Dean felt as if someone had punched him in the gut and the burning sensation in his eyes was back. "Sammy would have hated not being able to take care of himself." Dean said this half to himself and half to Castiel. He turned his head to look at the angel but found that once again he was alone.

But sitting on the bench next to him was a familiar item. Sam's cell phone that had the words '1 missed call, blinking on the front. Tears slid down his cheeks as he flipped the phone open and listened to his little brothers voice as all the anger turned to sorrow.

End Flashback

He wasn't quite sure if he'd slept in the car or stayed up the entire night. He'd lost track of how many times that had happened but he was fairly sure that this time he had stayed up all night again. He could remember Sam staying awake for what seemed like days on end because of nightmares and later because of visions.

He did know though that the sun rising before him had to be one of the most beautiful things he'd ever seen and not for the first time he wished his brother was there to share it with him. Dean took a sip of his beer from his spot on the hood of his car.

The air around him was oddly warm considering it was autumn and he was up north. It had been six months to the day that Sam had died. Even Castiel had been oddly absent for the past month. No one had seen the angel at all. Dean had a feeling though that he'd have company soon. He was right when moments later the crunching of gravel reached his ears.

"Were have you been?" Dean asked waiting for the angel to answer but none came. "You not going to talk to me now?"

"I'm afraid you have me confused with someone else." Dean turned to look behind him. He didn't know the person standing there but he did recognize the eyes. Bright eyes that were full of power and yet calm and trusting at the same time. An angels eyes.

"Who the hell are you?" Dean asked as he eyed the man in front of him. This man was at least 6 foot 8 inches and had dusty brown hair that was held back into a short ponytail. His cloths were casual. A pair of old sneakers adorned his feet. He wore a faded pair of blue jeans and a light blue t-shirt with a black jacket. His look was very different compared to Castiel's John Constintene look or Uriel's all business look. He looked more relaxed.

"Well Castiel told me that I'm supposed to be your guardian. And apparently it's a full time job. Thats what Uriel says anyways." Dean snorted and slid off the hood of his car so he could stand in front of this stranger.

"Ya well Uriel doesn't know shit." To his surprise the man laughed.

"Thats what Anna says. She thinks he too judgmental of humans."

"Ya well she'd be the one that knows now wouldn't she?" The man before him scratched the back of his head.

"I guess she would seeing how she's the boss."

"Why don't you just leave. I don't want some pain in the ass following me around." The man before him tilted his head to the side.

"I can't do that I have direct orders to guard you and only you."

"I don't care I don't want to have some high and mighty angel following me around. You got that so why don't you leave."

"Can't. So I'm just gonna have to stick around and be a pain in the ass." Dean eyed the angel in front of him for a moment longer than necessary because for the briefest of seconds there had been something familiar about the man in front of him.

"Go away you son of a bitch." Dean turned and began making his way back toward the drivers side door but the angels next word stopped him dead in his tracks.

"Jerk."

The voice was completely different but the way he had said it sent so many bells off in his head he was sure his ears would be ringing if they had been real. Dean swallowed hard and turned towards the angel.

"Sammy?"

The man smiled. "Apparently they figure the best way to keep you out of trouble would be to have me watch your sorry ass. Boy that really pissed off Uriel."

Dean was sure that his mouth had dropped open but all that he could take in was the mans eyes. Moments before they had been an eerie silver-blue color but now they were a dark brown-green. They were Sammy's eyes.
