I couldn't help my reaction. Seeing Edward again after the shock of having lost him, I found my feet running on autopilot towards him, tears streaming down my face. I had taken two steps when I suddenly found myself swept into a pair of ice cold arms. I looked up and there was Edward. Only it wasn't the Edward I remembered. It was like someone had taken the Edward I knew and made an imperfection-free mobile marble statue with amber eyes replacing the green I had known. It was a change. Not bad, not good, just different.
But those eye, they were filled with an affection that was familiar. Stronger than before, much more so. But those were definitely Edward's eyes.
"Edward," I sighed out in relief, tears still streaming down my face. "They told me...they told me you were dead," I told him, doing my best to burrow into his stone chest, inhaling deeply, attracted to his new scent.
I heard footsteps behind me; they could only belong to The Doctor.
"Explain," he said, dangerously calm. "Now."
Edward turned around so that The Doctor was in front of us, and I felt him stiffen. His chest vibrated as he let out a low growl. Carlisle, his eyes the same golden shade as Edwards, came over and put a hand on his shoulder, whether in restraint or reassurance, I knew not.
"You have to understand," began Carlisle, a small smile on his face, "this is all very confusing for us. Last time we saw you, you came bursting out of the TARDIS knowing everything about us. Even though you've explained this, it's a little strange from our perspective."
The Doctor nodded, never taking his eyes off me and Edward. The Doctor's presence woke me up a little form the joy of seeing Edward again, and I remembered Carlisle was here too. But how had this happened?
"You," I began, sitting up a little in Edward's arms, looking at Carlisle, "How are you still alive? And why do you both look so different?" I asked, looking up into Edward's face, tracing the subtle differences with my fingertips, watching in wonder as his eyes closed as grasped my hand within his own, holding it against his cheek.
"Do you know how long it's been since I've seen you? How long I've been waiting for you?" he whispered to me, gently moving my hand to his mouth.
Carlisle let out a warning growl, moving over to Edward faster than I could see.
"No need Carlisle," said Edward calmly, his eyes burning with an emotion I could only describe as desire. He kissed my hand, his ice-cold lips sending a tingling feeling coursing throughout my body. "I've been practicing," he said softly, tenderly, seemingly addressing me.
The Doctor made a very loud throat clearing noise. Carlisle a least looked up apologetic, but Edward simply gave him the middle finger without looking away from me. "Edward!" I exclaimed sharply. He at least had the decency to look somewhat apologetic before muttering a quick "I'm sorry."
"To answer all you questions, Doctor, will take some time. But as to the major one, what are we, the answer is simple. Vampires. We are vampires."
"No," he said, jerking to his head to one side, hands finding their way into his pockets. "Can't be. Or can it?" he mused aloud to himself. "No. Surely I would have run into one of your lot before now. Wouldn't I? But there is a first time for everything...hmm." He paused, eying Edward. Or more specifically, me in Edward's arms. "I would appreciate if you would put Bella down now. As in right now."
"We're not dangerous," said Carlisle, trying to pacify The Doctor, while Edward merely gripped me all the tighter, bringing me closer to his chest.
"All the legends, every piece of folklore says differently. You're supposed to be highly dangerous, feeding off the blood of human beings. So if you don't mind, if it's all the same to you, I think I'd be a lot more willing to discuss the particulars."
"Put me down please," I asked Edward calmly.
"What?" he asked, looking hurt and surprised.
"Edward, I know you would never hurt me. No matter when, where, or what you are. But The Doctor is my friend. And I think he'll be more willing to listen if he feels I'm safe," I said, speaking gently. I meant every word. Edward looked deep into my eyes, then nodded, placing me gently on the ground, still grasping onto my hand. So it probably wasn’t exactly what The Doctor had meant, but hey, it was a compromise.
“Continue,” he said calmly, still eying our joined hands speculatively. To tell the truth, I couldn’t blame him. Edward was being incredibly sweet, but he and I had had experiences together that I hadn’t had yet. Not to say I didn’t like it, but it was incredibly confusing. How many more times had we met on his timeline that hadn't happened to me yet?
"We don't hunt humans," Carlisle explained, getting right to the heart of the matter. "But in that, we are unique among our kind. There is only one other coven like our own. Humans are the natural prey of vampires, but we choose to hunt animals instead."
"Why?" I asked, looking up at Edward. He looked at me and smiled.
"Only you would ask why someone wouldn't want to be a monster," he said, shaking his head.
I grabbed his face with my hands. "You are not a monster," I told him, looking directly into his eyes.
He smiled sadly, remembering something. But our little interlude was interrupted by The Doctor.
"She's right you know, you're not a monster. A predator, maybe. Dangerous, most definitely. But not a monster. I've seen true monsters, and you aren't one of them," he said matter-of-factly before looking to Carlisle to continue his explanation.
"You were off by several decades. It's the early eighties, so while Bella's father is here, he won't have any idea who she is. You told us on your first and last visit when and where you would be coming. We ran down from Alaska this morning."
"Early eighties?" I inquired smirking at The Doctor. "Are you sure you know how to drive that thing?" Then the second half of the sentence sunk in. "Ran?" I asked, this time turning to Edward. No one could run that fast, could they?
"I'll show you," Edward said, smiling, gently squeezing my hand before letting it go. He was beside me, then he was gone. So fast that if I had blinked, I would have missed it, he appeared once again beside me, having run all around the clearing in less than a second, so fast my eyes had barely registered his absence.
"What other superpowers do you have?" I asked, half joking, but curious more than anything else. I wasn't disbelieving at all. If there could be time traveling aliens, why couldn't there be vampires who had lived among us as well? Humans didn't have to be the top of the food chain.
"Hearing, sight, smell," Edward listed off on his fingers, staring at me long and hard as he listed this last one. "And," he begun somewhat timidly, "we sparkle in the sunlight."
"Sparkle?" asked The Doctor, fighting off a smile.
"Show me?" I asked. Edward sighed, but stepped into a patch of sunlight in the meadow.
I gasped. He was beautiful. The Sun refracted off his skin, creating rainbows on the grass around him. His eyes were downcast, contrasting sharply with the skin shining around them.
"What's wrong?" I asked, grasping his face in my hands and tilting it so his eyes met my own.
"I keep waiting for you to run away, screaming as you go. Part of me wants this, because then you'll be safe from me. But the other part can't stand to lose you." His eyes closed and his face twisted with pain, whether remembered or imagined, I knew not.
"Hey," I whispered, as he jerked his head away, looking down at the ground. "Hey, look at me," I said, directing his face once again with my hands. I felt drawn to him in a way I couldn't explain. I always had, and that hadn't gone away or changed when he had become a vampire. If anything, thinking I had lost him had only strengthened the feelings. And seeing him in pain cause me pain. His eyes finally met my own. "I'm not going anywhere," I assured him.
There was sadness in his eyes, but then something changed. The desire came back, long with what I could only describe as determination. He held my face in his hands before carefully pressing his lips to mine.
I was beyond surprised, and at first I just froze. But his stone cold lips, hard against mine, awoke something inside me. The tingling I usually felt whenever he touched me coursed through my body, slowly growing into a burning desire. My hands knotted in his hair and my lips began moving around his.
It was Edward's turn to freeze. He then pulled away, chuckling quietly. "You'll be the death of me," he whispered in my ear.
"Now," asked The Doctor, his expression unreadable, "what do you mean by that?" He clearly sensed more behind the comment than I had.
His eyes darkened perceptibly going from gold to black. "She's my singer," he said simply. "Her blood calls to me," Edward explained, gently tracing my face with his index finger.
"Come with me," said Carlisle to The Doctor. "I'll try and explain everything the best I can."

"Singer?" I asked as soon as we were out of hearing, climbing through the woods.
"The call of her blood is almost impossible for him to resist. If not for your warning, the first time they met, it could have ended in tragedy."
"What did I do?" I asked, determined to ensure I kept her safe. And this knowledge wouldn't change the past, merely ensure its occurrence.
"You made her stay in the TARDIS at first, explaining to Edward what the problem would be. He wasn't quite willing to listen at first, but you gave him one of her shirts.; then he was more than willing to listen. You told him, very calmly, the effect Bella's blood would have on him and that he had to be prepared in time for the next visit. You gave him some of her things, things with her scent on them, and told him you'd be back a few days later. You did come back, and you let Edward see Bella once he showed you all her things were still intact. Then, after leaving one of my other children with them to protect Bella, you explained to me what you were, and that the next time we saw you, it would be a you from the past in your personal timeline. I have to say, at first it was hard to understand, hard to believe. But also hard to refute, when I could hear the evidence myself." He smiled, pointing at my chest, referencing my two hearts. "Would you like to hear more?" he asked, clearly unsure as to how much information he should reveal.
"I'll figure out the rest on my own. What I am curious about are vampires. You were once human, so something had to change in order for you to become like this. How does that transformation work?
And thus the doctor began explaining to The Doctor how vampires came to be vampires and all his theories surrounding the facts about vampirism.

"Carlisle isn't that discrete, is he?" I asked Edward, chuckling a little.
Edward simply started after the two of them, shaking his head. "I'll never get used to the way The Doctor thinks. I can only follow about half of it. He thinks in circles."
"You can hear people's thoughts?" I gasped, jerking myself out of fantasies I had been having about our kiss and where it could have lead had we not been in public.
"Not yours," he assured me, taking my hand in his own before sitting down, pulling me into his lap. "You always have been and always will be a mystery," he said, nuzzling his face into my hair, inhaling deeply.
"Edward," I began cautiously, "how did this happen? I have the feeling we're more than friends,," I said smiling, impulsively kissing him on the cheek. "How did we get this way? It must be tough since I can't be with you all the time."
"Tough?" he asked, a hard edge creeping into his voice. "Being without you, not knowing when you'll come back, if you're safe, if you've simply grown tired of me and will never return? Bella, it is impossible. Even with you here, in my arms, safe as I can keep you, I'm still worried about you, the future you, the one who has yet to return and won't until god only knows when." His eyes closed, and he was in pain again. "But I haven't answered your questions, have I?" Edward said, opening his eyes again, a smile that didn't reach his eyes flickering on his lips. "What are we to each other? Bella, you are my life. The most important thing to me now, the most important thing to me ever. I love you."
I felt my hands fly over my ears as I shook my head repeatedly. There was no way someone as amazing as Edward had said that about someone as plain as me. And even if he had, how did I feel about him? I had liked the kiss, but I had only known him for a short amount of time. I hardly knew anything about him. What was a girl to say, to do, after something like that?
"Hey," said Edward, pulling my hands away from my ears and holding them in his own in my lap. "I mean it, you know."
"I can't say it back. Not yet," I whispered, my face red, eyes downcast.
"I didn't expect you to," he said, placing a gentle kiss on the top of my head. "I was simply answering a question. How did we get like this? I've always been like this, Bella. Ever since I first saw you in that police box. The first time I held you, the first time your eyes me mine, I fell for you, hard and fast. Then, the next time I saw you, when I could finally control myself, finally keep you safe, everything just slid into place. You and me. Your last visit was my first kiss. This was my second."
"Which means that your first kiss will be my second. Unless I turn into a multispecies whore. Or meet one." We both had a good laugh about that one, although I couldn't help but notice the anxious look in his eye. Clearly this was the stuff of his nightmares.
We talked. We laughed. And I felt warm and safe and right, wrapped in his cold arms, and I knew that while I didn't love him, I will. One Day. One day soon.
