The Birth of Hikaru

Chapter 2 – Beginnings

A/N: This may be a little sqewif... If you see any mistakes, let me know and I’ll edit them ^^

Again, this was written by myself and my friend JpJz. Though some of it got lost and I had to fill in the blanks. Hopefully I didn’t do anything too different from the first time...
If that even makes sense...

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

A small surge of disappointment ran through L, but years of hiding emotions allowed it not to show. "Yes." He said, "I am your friend." He couldn't stop the slight disappointment that leaked into the words. "What I am trying to say is not easy on me." He muttered, "But Ryuki has not wrong about her assumptions." he finished in English, looking deep into Light's eyes.

It took almost a full minute for Light to process the information, but he managed anyway. He reached up at his cheek and realized just how hard he was blushing, wait...he was blushing? "Y-you mean..." He managed to stammer out finally. "...Oh..."

L nodded, feeling himself blush. He leaned closer to Light, "Please forgive me for what I'm about to do." He said quietly as he leaned even closer before gently placing his lips against Light's. His eyes slid closed of their own volition and his hand moved itself to cup his cheek.

Light was a bit shocked, but decided quickly to return the favor and kiss him.

At this moment, Mello came barging into the room, yelling. "L you're-!" He stopped, clutching the doorknob with one hand. Right in front of him, he saw L kissing some boy he had never seen before.

L pulled away from Light, slower than he probably should've, but he pulled back non the less. He opened his eyes then turned to Mello. "I realize that you are not the most politest of people, Mello, but really, please learn to knock." He muttered as he brought his hand to his lips as if just realizing what he had done. "Now," he continued, not risking a look back. "What was it you were saying?"

Mello stared in shock at the two. "Oh, um...Ryuki said you were here and..." He was glaring at Light now. "I have to go." He added quickly before running off to his room.

Light was extremely embarrassed now. He stared down at his shoes, feeling his face flush again.

L rolled his eyes and looked up to the sky. "He is a moron." He grumbled before looking back at Light. "I apologize." He said, "It is likely that I have made things... awkward between us. My lack of practice would not have helped." He sighed before looking into Light's eyes. "We do not need to speak of this again if you do not want to."

He sat down, his legs were shaking and his heart was thumping. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Opening his eyes again, he looked at Light, “However, I believe talking may be wise."

Light thought it was a very good idea to not talk about what had just happened, but he didn't want to say it out loud. "Talk?" He asked, almost sounding like a child. "About what?" He grabbed the computer chair and sat in it backwards, watching L carefully.

L sighed, more than slightly disappointed. "Alright." He said falling back into a lying position. "We do not need to talk..." He covered his eyes with his arm and just lay there, letting his mind wonder. Why had he done that? Why had he kissed him? He'd never done anything like that before. So why now? Sure, Ryuki was right in her assumptions, something was there, he felt something that was for sure, but was it really love?

But Light was straight, he had Misa. So what had possessed L to think that Light could feel something for him...?

"L, you're confusing me. Again." Light crossed his arms and watched the rain outside the window. The kiss had scared him, but he had somehow ...enjoyed it. He shook his head in a vain attempt to clear his thoughts. This didn't work very well.

L frowned before removing his arm and sitting up. "What is confusing, Raito-kun?" He asked, "I have found that I am attracted to you, and thus decided to show you this emotion by giving to you my first kiss." He said, looking at Light "Are you still confused?" he asked, keeping his eyes derived of emotion. It wouldn't help the situation any.

"Not any more than usual." Light answered with a smile, getting up from his chair and taking a seat next to Ryuzaki. He could swear he heard beeping somewhere, but decided to ignore it.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

This beeping was coming from a video game being played by a certain teenager listening in on the conversation through the open door. The only reason Light had not noticed him was because he was hiding next to the door.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

L's eyes widened as Light sat beside him. He sat up and looked to him. "So what happens now?" He asked quietly. Shifting a little nervously. He bit his lower lip as he waited for Light's answer. "Do we pretend it didn't happen, or..." his voice trailed off. This was when he realized that he and Light had been conversing in English. The other's ability impressed him.

Light could only shrug. "Don't know." He answered, feeling slightly awkward speaking in English. "Besides," He turned to L. "could you forget something like that?"

L shook his head, "I do believe that it is something that I will remember for my life." He told him, "But this is not about what I want, but rather, what you would like. I believe that I have made it clear what I want." He looked at Light again, licking his lips softly. "Everything rests on you shoulders."

Light turned red again, turning his head away from L. "I..." He thought again, this was a hard decision he had to make. "...I really don't know." Honestly, he wanted to say yes but...how would he tell Misa? More importantly, how could he keep her from mauling them both afterwards?

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

Matt grimaced down at his game, he was losing again. Also, he really had lent his video camera to Near(what he was doing with it right now Matt could only guess.), and right now would be the perfect time to record a video.

To put it simply, Matt has never understood the term 'privacy'.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

L nodded once, looking away. "I understand." He said quietly. Standing, he made his way to the door. "I should..go tell Rodger that I'm home..." He said before leaving the room. As he left the room, he noticed Matt stood by the door. "Say anything..." he muttered darkly in French, knowing that Matt could understand him, "And you'll regret it."

Matt stared up at L, his eyes wide. His mouth hung open at an odd angle as he nodded stupidly, his cole-bottle glasses almost slipping off. He stood up and ran into his and Mello's room, where his roommate was currently sulking.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

L carried on until he was about half way down the corridor. He then just stopped and leaned against the wall, sliding down it until he had his knees by his chest. He rested his head on his knees and tried to stop the tears. He'd never put himself out there before, never let himself get rejected. And it hurt.

Light stayed in the bedroom, still trying to arrange his thoughts into a working order. He sighed, realizing it was hopeless and pulled his phone out from his jacket pocket. He scrolled down until he found a number and quickly dialed it. Despite the fact that it was possibly in the early morning where he was calling, the person answered immediately.

"Rait-o!" a cheery voice answered, almost expectant.

"Misa...It's good to hear you." Light answered, it felt so odd talking to her now. Especially when he thought about what he was planning to do.

"Where have you been?! Matsuda won't tell me a thing!"

Light sighed. "Vacation, it was Ryuzaki's idea."

"A vacation, with Ryuzaki? Where?"

Light thought for a moment, deciding whether to tell the truth. "Europe."

"Aww...I wish I could have come with you..."

"Misa..." Light took a deep breath. "...There's something I need to tell you."

"Huh?" Asked Misa, sitting down on the ouch in her hotel room. "About what?"

Light was surprised how hard it was to break up with her, he was always so good with women. "I...I don't think this is working."

"What do you mean?" She started to giggle, grinning wide. "Is Ryuzaki that bad to hang around?"
Misa could have never been farther from the truth right at this moment.

Light steadied himself for a moment before answering. "Misa, I'm not sure how to tell you this, but It's not working out between us. I think it's better if we go our separate ways." He waited, but heard nothing but dead silence. "I'm sorry." He added, before ending the call and standing up.

Meanwhile, Misa stared in stunned silence at her cell phone. "Light-kun...broke up with Misa?"

L shuddered a few more times before standing and drying his eyes. He wandered around until he felt a little safer and realized that Ryuki must be around somewhere. He entered the room with a slouch and walked up to her. He sat beside her and buried his head in her neck, just as he had when he was five and lost his teddy bear. He only did this when he was completely depressed.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

Ada stopped in the middle of one of the empty sitting rooms. "Oh thank god he's not here..." She muttered, not realizing Ryuki had followed her.

"Who's not here?" Ryuki asked curiously. "You avoiding someone?" She walked further into the room and sat on a couch, regarding Ada with a smile.

Ada turned around quickly, her eyes wide. "Oh, uh No one!" She said quickly, stepping back. "I'm not avoiding anyone!"

"Ada, I'm a psychologist." Ryuki pointed out, "And I'm being trained to take over this place. I know you." She raised her eyebrows. "C'mon, you can tell me." She said, "when have I ever let you down?"

Ada frowned and looked down at her feet. "I have a crush..." She said quietly, her cheeks started to turn pink. "...and Mello knows who it is."

Ryuki raised her eyebrows. "Oh? And why don't I know this?" She asked, loving gossip. She grinned at Ada, "I'm one of your best friends yes? So tell! I won't tell anyone! Promise!"

Ada was not turning a color not too different to a tomato. "Alright, Alright..." She sat down on the floor, crossing her legs. "...It's Matt." She managed to finally whisper after a moment of embarrassed silence.

Ryuki smirked. "Can't see why..." She muttered teasingly. "You told him?" She asked her younger friend.

Ada glared at Ryuki now. "No! He found out..." She hugged her elbows, glancing back at the doors to check that they were still along. "...Now I'm worried he'll tell everyone."

Ryuki frowned, "Mello may be an ass, but he won't tell...." she said, "I hope..." She smiled reassuringly at Ada. "You know, nothing'll happen if he doesn't know." She shrugged, "You never know, if you say something, he might even respond."

"Yeah, but how?!" Ada asked, sounding a bit distressed. "How do you tell someone something like that?" She hugged her knees and stared out the window behind Ryuki. It was getting dark, the sun was probably setting on the other side of the house.

Ryuki smiled sadly. "Like this!" She exclaimed, "Oh I love you, you are my everything, there is nothing without you!" She spoke in a teasing tone, her body language playful.

"Ryuki!" Ada yelled, her fists balled up. "It's not funny!" She frowned and hugged her elbow, now speaking softer to her friend. "You know I'm not as..." She searched for the right word. "...as vocal as you are."

Ryuki laughed, "You take things too seriously. It's better to talk to him soon, before you get too attached..." She said, "Believe me, I'm a psychologist."

"But what do it say?" She asked, biting her lips. "I mean, what if he's not listening...you know how Matt gets when he has his Game Boy out."

"Hmm...how about we make a game for him?" Ryuki suggested, thinking for a moment. "If we hide a message in the end of the game, and give him the game for christmas- which is in about a week by the way, and knowing him, he'll have finished it in a week. We're at Wammy House, so there's a few people who are capable of helping us..."

Ada grinned. "Yeah!" She jumped up and pumped her fist into the air, grinning like a maniac. "I could program a game in a week, probably." She stopped, placing her index finger on her chin. "Wait, what kind of game should we make?"

"Oooh, we could make an RPG about a young prince named...Matthello who has to save a princess named.... Adatha... Who was captured by a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to see her dead.... The villain could be called.... Kirath?" Ryuki said in thought, grinning. She was enjoying this immensely.

L slinked into the room and crawled upon Ryuki’s lap. The young woman paused in her speaking to Ada for a few seconds, only to put her arms around L. She then continued as if nothing was wrong. "We could encode the message in the end!"

Ada nodded, smiling now. She didn't know L that well, so she couldn't see how he was feeling as well as Ryuki could. "That's a great idea Ryuki." She said, placing her hand down into her lap. "But honestly, Kirath? That's a little too cheesy..."

Ryuki shrugged, "We're still brainstorming." She said. L shifted slightly to place his thumb in his mouth. He was now feeling safe, and he found himself falling asleep. He rarely felt this comfortable and safe. Ryuki, noting this, shifted her own position to make L more comfortable.

"So what d'you want to call the bad guy?"

Ada looked down. "I dunno...How about Liraza?" She stared down at her feet, trying to come up with more ideas. "Hey, what if the hero had a friend that got possessed by the villain? But he didn't find out until the end, that'd be interesting. He could be named...Hika." She quickly added.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

Light walked out of the room and down the hallway, looking for L. "Wonder where he went..." He muttered to himself.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

"But the villain's an evil spirit, how can it be a girl too?" Ada frowned and crossed her arms. "Alright I’ll add a girl villain, but she'll be the main bad guy's back up." As she finished her sentence, the door opened and Light walked inside. "Oh, there you are..." He said, looking relived, looking down at L with a smile.

"Hey Light." Ada grinned up at him.

L flinched slightly and moved closer to Ryuki. He said something quietly to her and she nodded. "Light, what happened?" She asked, keeping the words in English, so everyone could understand her.

L peeked his head from where he was leaning against Ryuki, his thumb still in his mouth. "You rejected him?" Ryuki asked Light, not mad, just curious.

"What?" Light asked, his mouth hanging open. "No! I..." He hung his head low. "I didn't mean it." He glanced up at L and added quietly. "L, I'm sorry about earlier."

Ada watched the two, her head tilted at an angle as Light's cheeks slowly turn rose. She looked over at Ryuki, blatantly confused.

Ryuki sent her a look that said; 'I'll tell you later,' before watching the two boys, being there to comfort L.

L didn't move away from Ryuki as he stared at Light. "Explain what it is you want." He said, "Do you want me, or not?" he went back to chewing on his thumb.

Ryuki was watching in curiosity, a concerned frown on her face.

Light stepped forward, trying to ignore Ryuki and Ada staring at him. It wasn't easy. "You." He said, staring to feel his courage falter. "I want you."

Ada's eyes bulged, well that was easy. That explained why they were in the bedroom for so long... She thought.

L's eyes widened. He pulled away from Ryuzaki, not even glancing back as she gave him a concerned look. "You want...me?" He asked quietly, sitting up on the chair before standing. "But... I thought you said-" He trailed off and looked away. "E Dunaggh vumaph draka..." He said in the language that he and Ryuki understood. He was reverting to how he was as a child. He was still chewing on his thumb as he looked away, his feet idly playing with the fabric of the carpet.

Light nodded, his hands digging in his pockets as he chewed his lip. "I know...But I didn't mean it." He looked up at L, trying to reassure him somehow.

Ada frowned and leaned towards Ryuki. "I think we should leave..." She whispered to her as quietly as she could. The nervous 'aura'(if you could call it that) Light was unconsciously showing was affecting her, she knew exactly how he was feeling right now. It was how she felt when she saw Matt, but was too afraid to talk to him.

Ryuki shook her head. "You, maybe, but I have to take care of him." She gestured at L. "And someone might have to translate if he starts being like when he was a kid... He would only speak our language when he was nervous. Besides, I'm curious, aren't you?"

L was still chewing his thumb, but he looked up at Light. "What..happens now?" He asked quietly, almost inaudible.

"Alright, alright...I'll stay." Ada muttered as Light closed his eyes for a minute. "We can..." He trailed off.

"Umm...I don't know." Light seemed so embarrassed, like it was his first time admitting he liked someone.

Ada hugged her knees and scooted back towards the couch Ryuki was sitting on. She glanced up at her for a second before taking her gaze back to Light.

L bit his lip. "I have never..." He trailed off and looked away. "I have never..." He frowned, he didn't even know the words in Japanese. "I don't even know how to say it..." He frowned.

"In love," Ryuki supplied, translating it into their own language.

L nodded, "That'll do..."

Ryuki smirked and turned to Ada, "See....?"

The corners of Light's mouth began to lift into a smile. "So, you're not mad?" He asked, reaching his right towards him.

Ada rolled her eyes at Ryuki. she honestly had no idea what they were talking about now. Well, she heard light say 'I don't know' earlier, a phase Ada was all too familiar with.

L shook his head. "But I don't know what to do." He muttered, "At all..."

Ryuki nudged Ada, "Let's go." She whispered. "They don't need us now..."

Suddenly, a bell rang out, causing Ryuki and L to jump. "Lunch time..." L muttered, taking Light's hand and heading out of the room, "We must go to lunch now..."

Ryuki snickered and gestured to where L had grasped Light's hand. "C'mon." She muttered, "Lunch." She grinned, "See, if socially retarded L can do it, so can you. Just go tell him."

"B-But..." Ada began as she ran after Ryuki and L. "What if he says no?"

"Do you really think he would?" Ryuki asked, regarding Ada with a raised eyebrow.

Ada sighed and shrugged. "What if he likes another girl! Or...or what if he thinks I'm ugly!"

Matt walked into the hallway, dragging Mello behind him. "Hey, Ryuki! Can you help me out here, Mello won't budge..." Ada looked down at the blond boy, he looked like he'd been sulking again.

Ryuki smirked, "You'll do fine," She whispered into Ada's ear. "Go do it now... Go on." She smiled. "I'll take care of Mello." She added, walking towards the boy.

"What is it?" Matt asked her.

Ada sucked in a huge breath before answering him. "Matt...I'm not sure how to say this, but..." She trailed off, staring at him dazedly, but quickly snapped out of it. Now the words came rushing out of her mouth. "...I love you!" She all but screamed, her cheeks fiery red.

Matt smiled at Ada and kissed her on the cheek. "You're cute when your blushing." He said, leading her into the dining room.

--- --- --- L --- --- --- R --- --- --- H --- --- -- a --- --- --- N --- --- --- M --- --- --- m --- --- ---

"What's with you, eh? You're sulking again, aren't you? Tell me." Ryuki took Mello's arm and lead him towards the dining hall. "I'll listen."

“I saw L… with someone…” Mello answered quietly, almost silently, still looking away and sulking.

"You mean Light?" Ryuki asked, curiously, "He's L's boyfriend." She told him with a shrug.

Mello gazed up at her with a dark glint in his eyes. "What did you say?" He was starting to twitch. "Please tell me I misheard you..."

Ryuki frowned, "Why?" She asked, "You interested in him?"

Mello turned red and stood up with a huff. "What's it to you!" He said angrily.

Ryuki grabbed Mello's hand and pulled him back down. "Sit." She ordered, "We're going to talk, before you let your emotions take over your actions."

Mello sighed. "It's nothing, really..." He answered through his teeth. "So please just drop it."

Ryuki just looked at him. "If it's nothing, then you can tell me." She pointed out. "We're not going to dinner until you talk to me. I can make it official and ground you if I need to." She threatened. "So talk."

“NO!” Mello yelled, angrily.

Ryuki just looked at Mello, "Aha..." She sighed, "Mello, I'm a psychiatrist and a partial telepath. Why does everybody forget that?" Her last question was muttered to herself. "If there's one thing I know, it's people. So don't lie to me." She looked directly into his eyes. "Talk to me."

"Alright, I'll tell you..." Mello said after glaring at her for ages. "I saw Light and L..." Her answered, hiding his face with his hair.

"Go on..." Ryuki could guess where this was going, but wanted the boy to say it himself.

"...kissing." He could barely say it. Mello sighed and took a deep breath. "Is that boy really his boyfriend?”

“Yup.” Ryuki said with a grin. “Great huh?”

“No...” Mello said, obviously annoyed. He was still sulking.

“There’s no reason to get annoyed at me...” Ryuki pointed out with raised eyebrows.

"I'm not annoyed!" Mello snapped at her, thumping his fists on the wall. "I'm just..." He trailed off for a moment as he began to lose steam. "...angry."

Ryuki raised her eyebrows and nodded slowly. "You do, of course, remember that annoyed is pretty much the same as angry." Her tone was professional, understanding and calm. "Now, Mello, please, why do you think it made you feel like that?"

Mello grit his teeth and mumbled something under his breath. He looked up at Ryuki and quickly added, attempting to act as calm as possible. "...Because I like him, okay?" He growled and stood up. "Now, can I go?"

Ryuki smiled softly, and gently placed a hand on his shoulder. "You're still young." She told him with sympathy. "You'll find someone else." She walked towards the dinner hall. "Now let's get some food before dinner's over."

Once inside, she noticed Ada and grinned at her. She was sat with Matt, and for the first time in a long time, Ryuki didn't sit with her friend, but rather took the food and headed back to her room in the East wing.

Mello grumbled something under his breath and grabbed some food. He looked back at Matt and frowned, what was Matt doing with Ada? Matt was making Ada laugh about something, Mello didn't really care about the topic. A few of his friends called out to him and he faked a grin at them, deciding to sit with them for now.

Light turned red as L grabbed his hand. "It is? He asked in English. It was lunch time already?

L nodded. "We have four meals a day here." He explained, "Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Snack and Tea." He headed towards the dinner hall. "It is custom here, that everybody eats together." He slowed down a little, "However, because we are adults, we may eat in our rooms if we so wish. That being said, I am quite famous here, and it would be expected of me to eat with the masses. Will you accompany me?" He asked, now slowed to a stop. He was watching Light with curiosity, wanting to know what his answer would be.

"Of course." Light nodded and began to walk forward, having no idea where he was going now." Wait...tea? what the heck is tea?"

"Um... Dinner..." L said, "Do remember that we are in England, Light." He told him, "We use different words here sometimes." He explained, leading Light to the room. They walked up to a large table and L sat at it.

"Good-afternoon Near." L greeted the boy as he sat down. He turned to Light, "This is one of the boys who wish to take over my position when I retire or die." He said, "His real name will not be told." He turned to Near, a small fond smile on his face, "This is Light, my..." He trailed off and looked at Light, unsure of how to describe him.

Light quickly blushed and sunk in his seat, but did not confirm nor deny Ryuki's claim. "Uh, hi." was all he managed to say as Near peered over at him.

L blushed slightly and nodded. He bit his lip before looking down at the plate in front of him. He waited for the second bell before taking it and standing. "C'mon," He said to Light, "We have to go get our food." He muttered, moving towards a kitchen hole in the wall. He chose a slice of meat pie and covered it with gravy before placing two Yorkshire puddings on top. He then grabbed two tubs of ice-cream.

Light followed L and picked a few random items and sat back down with the young detective who began poking at the meat pie with a grimace... With a sigh, he leaned forward and started to shovel the food in his mouth.

“I dumped Misa!” Light blurted out, blushing furiously.

L paused in his eating before looking at Light, a small smile on his face. "Then I do not have to share you." His smile became a little wider. "That is good news."

Light smiled back at him. "Yeah, it is..."

L continued his dinner quietly, poking at his food and pulling a face ever so often. He made sure that every ounce of meat pie and Yorkshire pudding was gone before he hungrily started on his ice-cream. "See this is why I don 't like to eat here," He muttered. He picked up the ice-cream containers that were on his plate and shoved them in his pocket. "C'mon." He said, "Bring your food, and let's go somewhere with less... people..."

Light looked up at L and nodded, standing up and following him. He was surprised L had actually just eaten something that didn't have sugar in it.
