“I feel bad for them,” John said suddenly, earning himself a puzzled look from Elizabeth, who stood beside him against the balcony rail.

“Feel bad for who?” she asked.

“Those other John Sheppards,” John replied, and then gave a half-laugh. “That sounds weird, doesn’t it?”

Elizabeth smiled. “A little,” she admitted.

“I keep thinking that somewhere out there, there’s a me or a version of me or whatever who never sat in that chair in Antarctica. Or who turned down your offer to join this expedition. Or who did one of a million other things that could have resulted in me not standing here right now.” John sighed and shook his head. “I just can’t imagine how different his life must be.”

“Different is not necessarily bad, you know,” said Elizabeth gently. “I’m sure there are plenty of alternate Johns living happily on alternate Earths and –”

John’s harsh laugh interrupted her. “Sure, different isn’t always bad on principle, but in this case? Yeah, yeah it is.” Turning, he gave Elizabeth a lopsided smile. “Sometimes I don’t think you fully appreciate what Atlantis did for me, what you did for me. A life without either, well…” he shrugged. “Let’s just say it wasn’t much of – wouldn’t be much of – a life.”

For a long moment, they were silent. Finally, Elizabeth spoke, her voice low and hesitant. “But still, it’s not like they – the other Johns – would even know they were missing anything.”

John nodded. “I know,” he said. “And I think that’s the worst part.”
