Chapter 6

Confusion, Confrontation, and Disbelief

Stanley’s face was one of confusion and anger. His eyes were furrowed and his gaze hardened as he glared at the boy called...what was it ? Oh, yeah. Seijiniki. How dare this boy outright lie to him? The curly haired brunette boy narrowed his eyes even furthur as he stepped forward, gazing the boy up and down. The other boy held his own, staring back at Stanley as he sized him up.

“How dare you try to tell me that my sister is your twin?” the young boy dared for the young Japanese boy to answer. Seijiniki and Terrah shared a glance before the young girl stood directly next to the young Japanese boy.

“Stanley. Look at us. We look exactly alike…except for the fact that he’s male and I’m female.” The ebony haired girl said, looking at him with a pleading expression. She pouted her bottom lip and widened her eyes, forcing little droplets of tears to come to them. At first the brunette boy had to look away but the diabetic girl just shoved her face in his, making it almost impossible for him to look away. Finally, he just sighed.

“Alright, fine. Suppose I’ll believe you. Why did you leave her here?” Stanley interrogated Seijiniki. They all walked over to a bench to sit down and talk. At first the Japanese boy didn’t want to say anything but he eventually cracked underneath the adoptive sibling’s penetrative gazes.

“If I tell you, Mikomi, you have to promise not to get angry with me…or run off again.” The Japanese boy said, looking her in the eye.

“Mikomi?” the brunette boy on the other side of Terrah asked, raising an eyebrow. She turned to him, shushing him as she turned back.

“Ah…Mikomi is Terrah’s Japanese name.” Seijiniki explained to Stanley as his eyes remained on the ebony haired girl.

“Alright. I promise I won’t get angry at you…and I promise not to run off again.” The girl said, holding up her right hand dramatically. The Japanese boy sighed in relief but paused, wondering where to begin. He fiddled with the buckles on his trench coat – he was still wearing it despite the weather outside. He better be glad that the coat had no sleeves.

“It all started before we were born. Our ancestors are from the great Doku clan. Doku means ‘poison’ so they were essentially assassins. Eventually, as the blood in our family weakened, they stopped being assassins…but were still revered for their strong members of family.” Seijiniki started to explain, turning so he was facing his twin.

He swept the hair away from his forehead – it would make any other female swoon but not Terrah. That must further explain that they were family; she felt that familiar connection like she did with Stanley. Of course with the brunette boy it was because of the time spent with him.

“Eventually, our father was born. His name was Takai. His name meant ‘death’. He grew up to be a very cruel man and married our mother, Hana, through an arranged marriage. Exactly four years later you and I were born. When he discovered that you had type one diabetes…he disowned you. Mother didn’t want you to lead a bad life so she left you with some family friends in America. She said they knew what was best for you.” The Japanese teenager continued with his story. Terrah’s eyes were starting to mist up but she refused to cry.

Stanley wrapped an arm around his surrogate sister’s shoulder, trying to comfort her. He could see the pain in Seijiniki’s eyes when he retold the story so the brunette boy decided he couldn’t be all that bad. He nodded his head for the Japanese boy to continue, keeping his arm wrapped around his little sister’s shoulders.

“Apparently they didn’t keep you for fear of loosing their lives. Our father still held power in Japan at the time…before he was killed by a rival family in a feud. Now Uncle runs the family and he was the one who raised me from the age of three.” That was the end of the story apparently. The ebony haired girl couldn’t keep her tears at bay any longer.

“What happened to mother?” Terrah asked through her tears. Her surrogate brother tightened his grip on her shoulders as she slid over, eventually settling on his lap.

“She died two months after she gave you to her friends. Father had her murdered.” Seijiniki simply said, gritting his teeth in anger. The anger was not directed towards the girl in front of him, rather, at the man who he cannot remember nor can’t he communicate with. It angered him most of all that he would never get a chance to tell his father that he hated him.

Terrah gasped, covering her mouth with one of her smaller hands. Her tears had stopped a while ago but she bit her lip in an attempt to hold the rest of them back. She lowered her head, her hair falling in front of her face.

“It’s kind of sad that I’ll never know our mother. Our father…I am glad that I will never know him. Someday you should introduce me to our aunt and uncle.” She eventually said, looking up and smiling at her brother. He beamed back at he as they all rose, not noticing a pair of sad chocolate eyes that were still watching them.

“I suppose we should head back home now. Mom and dad are worried about you, Terr.” Stanley said, ruffling the ebony haired girl’s hair. Seijiniki nodded his head as he helped the younger girl to stand, brushing off his clothes as an afterthought.

“Alright. I suppose I should apologize to dad…he just made me so angry.” Terrah confessed as she brushed off her clothes as well.

“No offense, Mikomi, but you need a shower.” Her twin said playfully, nudging her in the shoulder. She scoffed playfully as she pushed him as well. They continued their silly antics for a while before the ebony haired girl pushed the Japanese boy over, shouting to the brunette boy to follow her home.

A sigh was emitted from the bushes as the small form of Hector watched Terrah run from the entrance of the park. He had watched how they interacted with each other and was finally convinced that this Stanley person was someone who was alright. He wouldn’t trust him at first but if he ever got to know the brunette haired boy he would become his friend.

Hector turned to go, planning to seek advice from his mother. Perhaps she would know what to do in this kind of situation. The cocoa skinned boy hurried back to the tree with the steps hammered into it, skimming up the steps in order to talk to his mother. When he arrived at the top his mother turned around, surprised by his sudden appearance.

“Mom…I think I did something bad.” Hector admitted, staring at the ground. He slowly walked over to one of the corners of the tree house, pushing his back against the wall and sliding down it. He rested his hands in his lap, twisting them as he tried to come up with a way to se Terrah again. Obviously she was mad that Hector didn’t trust her…but the blame could go both ways.

Terrah was nice and didn’t judge him because of his homelessness. She openly admitted her feelings about her family to a complete stranger – two complete strangers if you counted his mother. Hector wanted to see her again…but couldn’t trust her fully when she introduced him to the brunette boy. He was jealous; at first he didn’t realize that they were siblings…that he was the surrogate brother that the ebony haired girl had described.

She was at fault, too. She shouldn’t have openly trusted him with one glance…even though he saved her from the thugs and the tree. Since he was a stranger he wasn’t at liberty to accept friendship from another complete stranger – Stanley.

“I kind of rejected Terrah’s offer to meet her brother. I got jealous…that’s why.” He quickly said, cutting her off when his mother opened her mouth to respond to his first admission.

“I will admit that there is nothing for you to be jealous of, honey. You’re both only fifteen.” His mother consoled him, sliding down to sit next to him and wrapping a comforting arm around his shoulders.

“Mom. I got jealous of her brother when I thought he was her boyfriend. I was mean to her and now I don’t think she’ll come back. I really wanted to be her friend.” Hector sighed, burying his face into his hands. He long since gave up crying; it was too immature for someone in their situation.

“How about this? When I go into work I’ll try to find where she lives, ok? Maybe she goes to the school I work at.” Hector’s mother worked at a high school as a secretary, filing papers and making copies. Since it was an extremely low paying job she could only make enough money for one person…but since she had to take care of her son she gave up living in a house.

They traveled around, searching for places to live. Fortunately all of them were around the school that the cocoa skinned woman worked at. Unfortunately, she couldn’t pay the tuition to the school…meaning that Hector had no schooling. The poor boy couldn’t read and write and he couldn’t perform math the way he wanted to. It was alright with him – as long as they got by he didn’t need an education.

“Ok, mom. When is school starting again for the students?” the cocoa skinned boy asked his mother, brightening.

“Around four weeks or so. She’ll probably be a freshman if she were to attend.” Hector’s mother said, smiling down at her son. Hopefully she’ll be able to find where Terrah lived and save her son from living an extremely lonely life.

“Stanley, do you think mom and dad are going to be angry that I left?” the ebony haired girl asked her brother, looking up at him. She didn’t like the fact that he was taller than her…but he was older than her. And a male. What could she do? The brunette boy looked down at his surrogate sister, smiling softly.

“No, they weren’t mad. Dad was angry at himself, though. I know he didn’t mean it…he was just getting frustrated with his inventions.” The brunette boy said. Seijiniki was walking with them, hoping to be introduced to his twin’s surrogate parents.

“I…know. But if I hadn’t run away then I would never had met Sei.” Terrah said, wrapping an arm around her twin and giving him a sideways hug. He hugged her back, encouraging her when they stopped at the entrance to their building. The ebony haired girl took a deep breath, flinching when she felt the weight of her backpack being lifted.

She turned to see her twin slinging the backpack over his shoulder. He looked back at her, smiling as he brushed some of his bangs away from his eyes. They looked back at the building – it was time to face her parents.
