Death Note; Drama Special

IcePuppet (Idea co-done by SaiSekiSan)

Pairings: MelloxNear, MattxNear, MattxMello, MelloxMattxNear... and those are just the mains ;D

Author's notes: Okay, so this originally comes from a crack RP I did with Seki about a year or so ago. It had a strange, soap-opera plot. I've been a little writer's block-ish lately so I decided to revamp that story and see what I can make of it.

Warnings: Yaoi. CRACK. OOC. The characters are going to act like soap opera stars. Yes, even Near. Because I firmly believe that after 8 years even he can change.

Chapter 1: After eight years

When Near was twelve years old, L was working on an extremely hard case about a mysterious murderer who could kill people all over the word without touching them. This case was, in fact, so difficult, that L eventually enlisted Near and his equal, Mello, to help him on this case.

While Near was all for this, Mello disliked the fact that he had to work with his rival. And so, angered by this issue, Mello up and left without a trace, leaving behind not only a confused L and an over zealous Near, but also a very depressed best friend who had only one person left in the world, now that Mello was gone.

And so, Matt spent the night in Near’s room, crying.

The Kira case continue to grow over the next eight years. Things shifted and Near was moved to Japan along with Matt, half a year later. They were moved into an apartment where L resided along with the suspected Kiras- originally only one had lived there but since L had suspected him he had decided to move his investigation closer and Yagami Light had no choice but to agree.

Near was introduced to the case as N, but introduced to Light and Amane Misa as Near- a fake sign of trust from L who already knew that Misa could tell what Near’s real name was. A sort of, “This is my partner and to pretend like I trust you I’m going to tell you the name he goes by the most.”

Matt, who came half a year later, was introduced as the new kid in the building- as if he had nothing to do with the case. Near pretended to ‘quickly befriend him’ and the two of them ‘hit it off really well’, meaning those nights Matt spent in Near’s apartment weren’t as sneaky and suspicious.

It was around that time, eight years later, when Mello got a hold of Roger, who got a hold of Watari, who got a hold of L.

Next thing anyone knew, Mello was being moved in as well.

Light was extremely unhappy about the newest addition to their humble abode. He was pretty sure it was Mello, who wasn’t working on the Kira case but was instead helping L with any other cases he might need to do, who stole his laundry when he made a quick trip to the bathroom.

Misa, who was giggling over the newest addition because he was quite cute (but not as cute as her Light, oh no!), was actually the one who stole Light’s laundry.

L enlisted Mello to work on his other cases while he and Near worked on the Kira case. He told Mello it was nothing personal, but he didn’t want to disrupt the rhythm he and Near had going on. Mello was, of course, insulted, but he didn’t expect much more considering he had run off for eight years.

Matt was ecstatic to have his best friend back after eight years, though still a little peeved that Mello left without a good bye- he could forgive the blonde, however, as enough time had passed that he had gotten completely over the child-like anger he had felt before. After all, he was now twenty two, he could let things go.

Near wasn’t as excited as Matt. In fact he wasn’t excited at all. Not that Near didn’t get excited over things like when he was a child- no, he had grown out of that cold and emotionless state with the help of Matt and eight years of practice. Still, with Mello around, he feared things may go back to the way they were and he might turn back into the person he once was.

Mello wasn’t all that thrilled either, to be completely honest. He knew L hadn’t caught Kira, but he had expected a bit more then this. Of course there were things he didn’t know about the case, but from what he could tell there was nothing going on.

That, and he just didn’t want to see Near ever again- yet here he was.

It wasn’t his idea to come back. The Mafia had kicked him out after the incident with Yagami Light’s mother and him getting most of his crew killed, the rest of them blown up by his own hands. Yeah, that didn’t sit well with their records. Thankfully, the only one who had actually seen his face was dead so Yagami Light wouldn’t know it was him that killed his father-

Well, at least until Kira three point five, or whatever, used his magical eyes to see Mello’s real name and then bam, he would be Kira’s next victim.

Mello made sure to emphasize his connection to L in case Kira had any ideas. That way if he wound up dead L would know Light was Kira and- thus- Kira wouldn’t take that chance.

Or so he hoped.

Who knew.

The worst part was, though, the fact that Matt was secretly helping Near with the Kira case and the two of them were spending an awful amount of time together. Plus, Matt was supposedly Near’s “best friend” and had nothing to do with the case, so Mello had to pretend like he didn’t know the redhead.

And when he finally DID get some time with Matt, the redhead ran off on some ‘date’- which, to Mello, meant he was going to go ‘hang out’ with Near.

Hang out. Right.

A few days after he’d moved in, Mello decided that the only way he was ever going to work on the Kira case was if he agreed to work with Near (which he had yet to do- but he was convinced L would let him if he simply said, ‘I will work with him’). However before he could say that he had to make nice with the albino- he didn’t want to work with someone he didn’t like. Maybe time had changed Near, maybe they could get along?

He knocked on what he assumed was Near’s door (as Matt had told him in passing on the elevator, ‘This is the floor Near lives on. He lives right above you.’) and waited for an answer.

To his lack of surprise the albino opened the door, dressed in white pajamas, carrying a toy robot under his arm, his fingers curling in his hair. He had grown quite a bit- he no longer looked like an eight-year-old girl- but he still looked like he was in his early teens instead of the twenty something he really was. He was also really thin, like a toothpick- if Mello remembered correctly, Near was practically allergic to every kind of food there was.

“Mello,” Near greeted in his girlish voice, opening the door wider and stepping out of the way, inviting Mello in.

Mello slipped inside, looking around the apartment quietly. It was the same layout as his own, as he assumed every one in the building was, but Near’s was quite different. It had furniture of every color thrown in there hazardously, with no style- used only for function, not for looks. There was a huge TV on the side of the room with a few video game systems and a stack of games set up in front of it.

There were toys neatly placed all around the room, which did not surprise Mello at all. Of course, after all these years, Near was still obsessed with toys.

“What brings Mello here?” Near questioned after a long silence, bringing Mello from his thoughts.

“Oh,” Mello stated rather dumbly. He wasn’t sure how to bring about the subject so instead he sat down on Near’s rather uncomfortable sofa. “Well,” he went on, crossing his legs.

Near sat down next to him, putting the robot on the floor in front of him as he pulled one leg up to his chest.

“As you know, when we were kids,” Mello decided to try, turning toward Near so he could explain better. “I hated you.”

“Yes,” Near confirmed with a nod.

“Well, we’re grown now,” Mello went on. “So I figured we could give this a second chance, maybe? So long as you’re not a cocky asshole anymore, anyways.”

“I see,” Near answered.

“That’s it?” Mello asked, frowning. “Just ‘I see’?”

“Mello is correct,” Near went on, only after being prompted by Mello’s glare. “We should give this a second chance.”

“Good,” Mello huffed, crossing his arms over his chest.

They sat their in silence for a few moments before Near went to stand. He forgot, however, about the toy on the ground and found himself tripping over it, sprawled out across Mello’s lap… their lips on top of one another.

“What the hell, Near!?” Mello screeched underneath of him, trying to push the albino off only to get more and more tangled with him. “Get off!”

“I’m trying,” Near huffed.

Mello’s eyes widened when he realized Near’s cheeks had turned red. “Are you… blushing?”

“Yes,” Near informed, hiding his face by turning it away.

“Why?” Mello asked.

“Mello and I are in a very compromising position,” Near explained.

Mello’s face was the one that went red this time. “What!? How can you even think about that! It’s- you and me!”

“Mello doesn’t like boys?” Near questioned in awe, looking Mello up at down as if the leather attire were to tell him Mello’s sexual preference.

“Mello doesn’t like NEAR!” Mello responded, moving to shove Near off of him. He then paused and turned bright red as Near’s knee brushed against his inner thigh. “What are you doing!?”

“Trying to get off you,” Near confirmed, shifting again and making Mello squeak. “Is Mello okay?”

“Quit wiggling!” Mello snapped. “Just stop moving!”

Near stopped, looking at Mello with wide blue eyes.

Mello stared back at him with his own hazel eyes for a long moment. Near’s cheeks were still pink and he was gasping lightly for air- obviously a bit riled up by their little roll around. He could clearly feel Near against his inner thigh and although the other wasn’t aroused, Mello found himself wondering what it would be like if Near was.

(Was Near really human?)

Mello felt his face grow even hotter under Near’s tiny body. The albino had stopped moving as demanded and was still staring into Mello’s eyes dramatically, his eyes open wide like L’s would be.

So Mello leaned in and kissed him, because he hated that look on Nears face.

Because he still hated Near.

And Near kissed him back. Expertly. As if he had been practicing for 8 years.

It was the best kiss Mello had ever experienced.

The rest of it was pretty damn good, too.

It was quick and rough. wet with hate and confusion. What were they doing? They hadn’t seen each other in eight years and then this? Mello would have never dreamed that after eight years of not seeing Near he would end up in bed with him…

“I don’t want this to be a one time thing.” Mello wasn’t sure what he was thinking when he said these words. His brain was illusive and numb.

Near wasn’t sure what he was saying either because the albino just mumbled something along the lines of ‘okay’ .

Mello had left, then- pretty much grabbed his clothes and stumbled out, afraid of anything more he might say if he stayed longer.

This had to be the weirdest day of his life.
