Chapter 1
It has been a few years since the Winter War. Soul Society defeated Aizen, Ichimaru, and Tousen along with most of the Espada, some Arrancar and all but one fraccion. While Soul Society’s Shinigami were all seriously hurt, everyone survived with considerably more scars than before. Kurosaki Ichigo had been able to rescue Inoue and he was the one that defeated Aizen. Hitsugaya, captain of the tenth division, was the on that defeated Ichimaru. Komamura Sajin, captain of the seventh division, defeated Tousen. The only two Espada left are Ulquiorra and Grimmjow and they kind of run Hueco Mundo and the only remaining fraccion is Lilinette. While those three are still alive, they are far from good and really don’t have control of the Hollow that manage to get to Human World. As for the Vizoreds, well, they stay in Human World, behaving for the most part and Soul Society did receive help from them during the war.
On a side note, Nel is now living with Ichigo in Human World because she had gotten very attached to the Substitute Shinigami.
Soul Society was able to replace two of the three missing captain positions. Hisagi Shuuhei replaced Tousen as the ninth division captain and Kira Izuru replaced Ichimaru as the third division captain. Everyone expected Ichigo to become the fifth division captain, but oddly enough he declined. So then they offered the position to Abarai Renji, who was going to accept but Kuchiki Byakuya refused to let Renji leave as vice-captain saying that Renji was not ready. Madarame Ikkaku and Ayasegawa Yumichika would have been the next choices but they still claim that they do not know Bankai and remained in the eleventh division. Thus since no suitable replacement for Aizen was found, the fifth divisions captain paperwork is sent to the sixth and seventh divisions (Byakuya and Komamura’s divisions, respectively). Hinamori Momo is currently running the fifth division as vice-captain to the best of her ability with help from the third and fourth divisions (Kira and Unohana Retsu’s division, respectively).
But the fifth division was soon not going to be captain-less.
The twelve captains of the Gotei 13 sat in the captain meeting room. It was actually a dimly lit room. They were lined up on two sides with the Captain-Commander at the head, almost like a table. Once again they were discussing about the fifth division.
“It’s been three years since the Winter War and every suitable candidate for the captain’s position has either declined or has been unable to advance,” said the Captain-Commander Yamamoto-Genryusai Shigekuni. He is an old, very tough, man. He sent a cross look at Kuchiki Byakuya, who did not bat an eye. “The fifth division needs a captain.”
“Well, it’s not like a suitable candidate is going to appear suddenly and willingly, Yama-jii,” said Kyoraku Shunsui, the eighth division captain. He is one of the original students of Yamamoto. He had a lazy look on his face and he wore a floral pink overthrow on his Shinigami captain robes.
“Yamamoto-sou-taichou, I’m sorry for interrupting,” said a member of the 1st division, “There’s a person at the front gate of Seireiteri with a zanpakuto asking to see you. She claims that she wants the job of fifth division captain and that she is suitable for the position.” All the captains stared at Kyoraku with blank looks on their faces. He smiled lazily.
“Then bring her to us,” said Yamamoto. “We might as well see if she actually is a good choice.”
“We don’t know anything about her, so we better be on our toes,” said Soi Fon, the second division’s captain. She is a black haired woman, who specializes in assassinations.
“You think someone will actually try to walk in and assassinate one of us,” asked Kira. He looked eternally depressed. He has blonde hair and part of it falls over his face.
“No one is stupid enough to actually try it,” laughed Zaraki Kenpachi, the eleventh division’s captain. He has crazy spiky black hair and he is quite large. “But I’ll beat the tar out of the little girl if she does try something.” The door to the captain meeting room open and the 1st division member brought in a girl about the size of Hitsugaya (albeit shorter than the tenth division captain). She had blonde hair tied loosely in a ponytail and green (blue) (hazel) eyes. She carried a zanpakuto on her back similar to the style of Hitsugaya. Her robes were worn and grey, and falling apart. She kneeled and bowed politely in front of the captains.
“Please state your name and any of other information you think is vital,” said Yamamoto.
“My name is Bakura Dei; I’m from the 79th District of Rukongai. I heard that you all are having trouble finding a fifth division captain. My Obaa-san suggested I should go and see if you’d accept me for the position,” said the girl named Dei, like she had not a care in the world. “I don’t really care if you want my help, I’m just bored and Obaa-san told me to.”
“Why kind of skills do you posses Bakura-san,” asked Yamamoto. He was seriously starting to consider that she may be a good person and may be a possible choice. But her lack of caring was off-putting.
“I have a zanpakuto, as you can see. I know Shikai and Bankai. I’m afraid I don’t know kido; as I haven’t gone to your Academy,” replied Dei. “I also believe that I’m decent at hand-to-hand combat.”
“I see, if you will just follow Taka-san outside for a moment, so we can discuss this,” said Yamamoto. Dei left with the Shinigami. “Well, I would like input from you all.”
“We can’t trust her word on any of it,” said Soi Fon.
“I say we have her fight one of us and if she survives, let her join,” said Kira, dispassionately.
“She’s offering her skills, I don’t believe we should hire her right away, but we do need to consider Seireiteri,” said Unohana. She has a long black braid, split around her neck which meets into a braid.
“She needs to be tested that is for sure,” said Byakuya. He is very pretty with long black hair and a strange hair piece on his head.
“I think Soi Fon should take her to the interrogation just to verify her story,” said Komamura. “Then if she passes that, we need to test her skills.” He is an anthropomorphic canine.
“I say let’s let her have a temporary captain position and see how she does,” said Kyoraku.
“I agree with Kira, she needs to be tested,” said Hisagi. He has black messy hair and three scars very visible over his left eye.
“I believe we need to find out more about her before anything else,” said Hitsugaya. He has white hair and green eyes. He is the shortest captain and the youngest captain ever in the history of Seireiteri.
“I say let me and her go at it and see if this Bakura girl is any strong,” said Zaraki, reveling in the thought of a possible fight.
“As for me I do not care,” said Kurotsuchi Mayuri, captain of the twelfth division, the research division. He looks almost like a robot. He got a cross look from Yamamoto, and Mayuri quickly continued his statement. “She needs to be tested, thoroughly.”
“She seems like a good girl, but I don’t think she has what it takes. She’s not Toushirou-kun,” said Ukitake Jushirou, the chronically ill thirteenth captain. He has white hair, very pale skin because of his tuberculosis. Hitsugaya glowered at Ukitake, he is a captain, and he should be addressed as such. Yamamoto closed his eyes for a brief moment and opened it.
“Bakura-san may enter,” he said. Dei entered, looking like she was when she came in before. “Bakura-san do you have any objection to a fight?”
“I don’t care,” said Dei.
“Zaraki Kenpachi, the eleventh division captain will be your opponent,” said Yamamoto. “If you show any significant talents, you will join Soi Fon in interrogation for verification on your story. Then if you pass her test, you will join Unohana for a physical.”
“Fine by me, but we might need to go outside,” said Dei. Zaraki stood up, rather excited.
“Just because you’re a girl don’t mean I’m going easy on ya,” said Zaraki. Dei just stared at him and walked outside. Zaraki followed, and then the other ten captains walked outside. Zaraki is the only captain that did not know the name of his sword nor the Bankai, but that didn’t matter since he is (one of) the best warrior.
Zaraki and Bakura stood across from each other, while the other captains watched.
“You ready,” asked Bakura, to Zaraki.
“I’m always ready,” said Zaraki, chuckling. Dei unsheathed her zanpakuto and Zaraki took his out as well. They rushed forward and clashed swords. Zaraki was easily able to overpower the girl and threw her into one of the various buildings that surrounded the area. The captains sighed, disappointed. “It’s not over.”
“Shikai,” said Dei, “Hisame Screech One-Two-Three.” Zaraki covered his ears suddenly.
“Holy shit, make it stop,” groaned Zaraki. Dei, then, kicked Zaraki into another building. “Damn, girl, I can’t hear now, thanks.” Dei shrugged as Zaraki used the handle of his sword to hit her in the stomach and then on her head. She quickly got up and slashed at Zaraki, who easily dodged.
“Bankai, Tornado Whirlwind,” called Dei. Then nothing happened. Yamamoto sighed. The other captains just stared. Zaraki chuckled.
“Looks like you can’t do Bankai after all,” said Zaraki.
“Oh come on you stupid freaking sword, would you work,” said Dei, frowning, at her zanpakuto. “We’re in a middle of a fight, you piece of crap.” Then all of sudden, a rush of reiatsu (?) came about and a giant tornado headed straight towards Zaraki. The wind was so rapid; Zaraki got caught up in it. The tornado calm down after a few minutes, leaving Zaraki winded but really excited.
“What else do you got,” asked Zaraki. They clashed swords again, but Zaraki used so much force that it knocked Dei’s zanpakuto out of her head. She tried to get her sword but Zaraki blocked her. She was not intimated and then gave Zaraki a nice uppercut. It stunned him for a moment where she kicked him away. Dei sprinted and grabbed her zanpakuto.
“Alright, enough,” said Yamamoto, commandingly. Dei sheathed her sword and sat on the ground, out of breathe. Zaraki grumbled something about wanting to finish the fight. “Bakura you have some skills. Unohana, please, heal them.” The fourth division captain, attended to Zaraki first using her Minazuki on him. Then she moved on to Bakura.
“Thank you Unohana-taichou,” said Bakura, politely.
“You’re welcome Bakura-san,” said Unohana, smiling politely.
“Well I can hear again,” said Zaraki. “You’re good, girl, you show no fear and you didn’t underestimate me. I like to finish this fight some other time.”
“Sure, I’d like to finish the fight as well,” said Dei.
“Bakura, go with Soi Fon,” said Yamamoto. Dei followed the scowling second division captain. Soi Fon glared at Dei, who blinked. “Soi Fon, send her to Unohana for a physical, if you see fit.”
Dei and Soi Fon reached the second division and Dei found herself seated in an interrogation room. It was gray and bleak and much like an interrogation room that police use in human world. There was a table between the possible fifth division captain and the second division captain.
“So you say you come from the 79th district of Rukongai,” asked Soi Fon.
“That’s right,” said Dei, nodding affirmatively.
“How come it took you so long to want to show up to try and become a captain,” asked Soi Fon, clearly trying to tell Dei that she doesn’t like her.
“Well, a year after the Winter War, I headed out to get here,” said Dei. She was looking Soi Fon directly in the eyes without looking away. “I got lost quite a bit. I’m afraid I have no sense of direction and then I got into a lot of fights in the 78 other districts. Then I took a wrong turn and somehow began backtracking, but I eventually found my way here.”
“I see and who is this Obaa-san you speak of,” asked Soi Fon. Honestly, Soi Fon actually believed her story which irked her.
“Obaa-san found me after I came here; well a long time ago, I don’t know her real name. I stayed with her since. She took care of me at first, since I had a bad concussion and then I began working to get food and clothes for us,” said Dei. “Then one day, she told me that I was strong enough to become a shinigami and sent me on my way.”
“And what is the name of your zanpakuto,” asked Soi Fon.
“Hisame,” said Dei, sighing. She did not sound like she liked her zanpakuto. “The Shikai is a horribly loud screeching sound that makes my opponent temporarily deaf. The Bankai produces high tornados and whirlwinds.”
“You wouldn’t be telling me your Shikai or Bankai, if you were evil or against us,” said Soi Fon, sighing. “I’ll have someone take you to Unohana-taichou.” Soi Fon stood up and Dei followed suit. Dei bowed politely and then held out her hand for Soi Fon to shake. “I don’t like you.”
“I know, but are we not going to be possible comrades,” asked Dei, still holding out her hand. “And for the record I don’t like anyone but Obaa-san.” Soi Fon, reluctantly, shook Dei’s hand.
“Omaeda, take her to Fourth Division,” barked Soi Fon, ordering her vice-captain Omaeda Marechiyo.
“Yes, Soi Fon-taichou,” said Omaeda. Dei followed him. “So you look like you’re getting on Taichou’s good side. Why are you here, anyway?”
“…Stop talking, it’s annoying,” said Dei, uncaringly. Omaeda face-faulted and wondered why he always met women who thinks he is annoying.
“Here it is,” said Omaeda. Dei thanked the vice-captain and entered the medic division. Kotetsu Isane, the fourth division vice-captain, nearly ran right into her.
“I was told to come to Unohana-taichou,” said Dei.
“That way,” said Isane, rushing out. Dei sighed and headed in the pointed out direction. Dei stopped.
“Uh, crap, I got lost again,” said Dei, at two corners. Her confused face almost made her look like she was innocent.
“Oh Bakura-san, I was waiting for you,” said Unohana, appearing. “Come with me.” Dei followed Unohana to her office. “I just have to do a simple physical; it’ll be done in a few minutes, just hold still.”
“Alright,” said Dei. Unohana started on the physical. Dei looked around the hospital room. It smelled very nice. About twenty minutes later, Unohana looked pleased, well she always does but that is beside the point.
“You are in decent health. Good reflexes, really good. The only thing I’m concerned with is your flocculating weight, you told me about,” said Unohana. “Come for a weekly weight check and Yamamoto-sou-taichou told me to give you some new robes.” She handed Dei regular Shinigami black robes. Dei put them on over her clothes.
“Fine by me,” said Dei. “Thank you for being nice.”
“It’s my job to take care of people,” said Unohana. “Now, I’ll take you to the fifth division because Yamamoto-sou-taichou will be waiting for you.” Dei followed Unohana to the fifth division. Yamamoto and Hitsugaya were waiting outside the doors. “Everything is fine, Yamamoto-sou-taichou.”
“Good,” said Yamamoto. Unohana bowed and left. “Bakura, here are your captain robes. However, you’re only a temporary captain for six months, and then you’ll have a progress review. I’ll be right back.” Yamamoto entered the fifth division, leaving Hitsugaya and Dei outside. Dei put on the white robes over her black ones.
“Listen to me,” said Hitsugaya, steely and death glaring her. Dei suddenly got really cold. “Hinamori-fuku-taichou is my friend, you do anything to hurt her and you’ll regret it.”
“I don’t ever intend to go around and hurt anyone,” said Dei, shivering.
“I’ll be watching you,” said Hitsugaya. Dei just stood there. Yamamoto came out and gave Hitsugaya a look. The tenth division captain left.
“You may go in now,” said Yamamoto, “Good luck.” The Captain-Commander left and Dei entered the fifth division. Every member of the division stood there, Hinamori Momo the vice-captain stood in the front.
“Hello, I’m Bakura Dei, and apparently I’m your new captain for the time being. I hope we work well together,” said Dei, looking around at the other Shinigami. “So where’s the office I’ll be in so I can start work?”
