Prologue

His pawsteps made no noise as he padded through the undergrowth in the forest. The night was glittering with stars, and a full moon hung in the sky. His black fur blended with the night, and his dark brown stripes blended with the forest. His yellow eyes glittered dangerously.

“Those groups of fox-dung,” he hissed. Quickly, a dark brown tabby padded up to him, scars clearly visible on the tabby’s pelt.

“I have found the perfect place for our camp,” the scarred tom growled, dipping his head to the other cat.

“Good. Longscar, get the others. Where is it?”

“The Abandoned Twoleg Nest,” Longscar replied. His right eyes had a scar through it, so he could not see out of it. His other eye was a brilliant bright green.

“I will meet you there,” the other cat promised. “I must go by the lake first. I have heard of a Healer rogue who may join us.”

“We could sure use a Healer,” Longscar said. “We had to fight off some rats today, and-“

“I know. That’s why we need her. We can’t take over the Clans with unhealed wounds.”

“NO!” Firestar growled. His pelt glittered with stars, and he glared at Bluestar.

“Firestar, this is something not even StarClan can change,” she comforted him.

“But we can’t even warn the Clans?” he snarled.

“They must learn to deal with this on their own,” Bluestar answered.

“Not even a prophecy?” he asked.

“No. This is a like test for the Clans. We must see what their decision is.” With a growl, Firestar padded away, leaving Bluestar staring into a pool.

The pools surface darkened, and then showed the RiverClan nursery, where six kits were play-fighting outside. A queen padded out of the nursery and called them back in.

“I do hope that the Clans choose for the best,” she whispered.
