The Difference: They say we are all connected, that we all change because of each other. Two girls learn the truth of this together with the Cullen's.

Chapter 1: Brevard, NC; 2:00am; November 21, 1919

“Miss Sinclaire,” Jasmine Moretti gasped and the eighteen-year-old blond made a face at the full name. It was always the full name from Jasmine Moretti, the Sinclaire tutor’s daughter. It infuriated Aramina that someone she had known since she was two still wasn’t using her first name, “What exactly do you think you are doing out of doors this time of night?”

“I could ask you the same question Moretti,” was Aramina’s rebuttal.

“I saw your lantern leave the main house,” Jasmine replied, “Next, time you want to sneak out I recommend you don’t take the lantern.” There were traces of amusement in her tone as she took in the girl only two years her junior, amusement wasn’t something Aramina had ever heard out of the elder before. “Look,” Jasmine began with a sigh, “If you go back to the house now I won’t tell anyone you were out.”

“I have to find my cat, Medea,” Aramina protested.

“You won’t find a black cat at night, Miss,” Jasmine replied, “You will only find trouble” There was something dark in Jasmine’s voice as she said this.

“Nothing's going to happen to me,” Aramina rolled her eyes, “Nothing ever happens here.” With that she started walking again with Jasmine trailing behind.

“Miss Sinclaire,” Jasmine tried again desperation ringing in her voice, “I really think that…” Jasmine trailed off, “Did you hear that?”

“Maybe its Medea,” Aramina said hopefully, plunging into the adjacent woods, Jasmine once again hot on her heals.

“Hello Dinner,” Said a smooth baritone voice as a man pale as the moon itself dropped from one of the trees. “My name is Luke and I will be eating you tonight.” The beautiful, pale man grabbed Aramina, and then lowered his mouth to her neck before sinking his teeth into her neck.

Jasmine lunged for the lantern and swung it breaking it on the beautiful and terrible creatures head, “Let her go!” Jasmine yelled. The twenty-year-old’s eyes grew wide as the monster caught fire and he dropped Aramina whose mouth was hanging open as if screaming in pain.

Jasmine went to run towards her but the monster’s hair was already out and now he had her in his frozen grasp and she realized that she was doomed to die, painfully if Aramina’s state said anything of the monster’s bite. Jasmine let out a powerful scream just as Aramina found her voice again.

Twin screams echoed through the small town as dogs everywhere began howling. The screams cut off as fast as they started, so no one in the small town stirred much. Jasmine wondered idly what she and Aramina had done to deserved this damned creature’s attention.

She looked again at the younger girl with pity. Aramina wasn’t all that bad; she just happened to live a life of privilege and didn’t understand what suffering was, until now. Jasmine equally knew that Aramina was pretty friendly, but she didn’t know the rules. Master Sinclaire had been clear when Jasmine and her widowed father had moved to the Sinclaire estate that his children were better than Jasmine, and that any alliance between them was absolutely forbidden. Jasmine had listened and it broke her heart every time she saw the closest opportunity for a friend stubbornly stick to calling her Miss. All this seemed not to matter now that both were going to die, here, now, together. It would be the first thing they ever did that was actually together.

Jasmine felt the monster nuzzle her and heard him breath deeply then sigh with pleasure before the creature sunk his teeth into her neck and pain began consuming her.

Before the pain took her sight she saw two more pale creatures, both looked male, one had blond hair and the other’s was a strange shade of bronze.
