Chapter 4
Tara McClay has never felt so nervous. Sure it was dinner with a new friend with old friends but still this was different. The blond witch had probably changed outfits 6 times finding nothing to suit her tastes. She now stood in front of her room door mirror in light blue sweater and the usual jean skirt. Sighing she knew that she should have taken her mothers advice and bought new clothes when the older woman went on a shopping spree.
Since she had moved here about 3½ years ago the only people she could talk to was Willow and Xander. They were the only people who didn’t mind her stutter. She was a socially awkward girl who couldn’t speak. Then there was Buffy. The other blond was just so amazing. Not many people would stand up to Cordelia and make the Queen speechless. Plus she did it for their sake, the social outcasts. The thought just sent butterflies on a kamikaze throughout her stomach.
Not to mention she was beautiful. Long blond hair, petite figure, perfectly tan features, and the most gorgeous pair of hazel eyes she has ever seen.
Tara was also curious. Buffy radiated a power she had never felt before. It was an old power. Strong. Lonely. Sad. When she asked her mom about it. A thoughtful look passed across Rose McClay’s face before she asked Tara exactly what she felt coming from Buffy. After describing in detail, Rose’s thoughtful look turned amused with a hint of sadness. When she asked her mother about her thoughts she just waved Tara off and told her it was nothing important.
The younger blond knew she was never gonna get a straight answer from her so she just headed upstairs and got ready for tonight. Now here she was waiting for her two best friends to show up. The door bell rang. Tara heard her mother open the door. “Hey Ms. Mc how’s it goin. Looking as beautiful as ever.” Xander. He was a sweet affectionate guy. But still a guy. Willow was also sweet. The perfect example of the shy, but cute, geek.
Both had a bad relationship with their parents. Willow’s parents were never around at all. Her fellow witch spent most of her time at Tara’s house. Mr. and Mrs. Rosenburg were always on some business trip which usually took them out of the country. Even when they are there they continue to treat her as if she was still 5 years old instead of 15. If not for Xander she would have been completely alone. Then there were Xander’s parents.
His were worse than Willow’s. While hers ignored her Xander’s parents didn’t. His mother wasn’t that bad but his father was a raging drunk. Mr. Harris spent most of his time drinking his life away in front of the couch. And when ever he got angry he took it out on Xander. His mother did nothing to stop him, she acted like it didn’t even happen. He spent most of his time also at Willow’s, or his only guy friend Jessie, house.
Willow had a crush of epic proportions on Xander. Anyone with eyes could see it, well except for Xander of course. Tara helped her see is wasn’t really love but friendship turned that was turned into something else cause he was the only one who showed any type of affection towards her.
Tara made her way down stairs. Xander saw her first and smiled. When she made her way towards the group the over exuberant boy looped his arm around Tara’s and Willow on the other. “Well we be goin now don’t be a stranger now ya hear me.” Rose merely giggle at the young man and waved them out. Rose watched the leave down the sidewalk. “So a slayer has come to town…”
Buffy took a deep breath and opened the door. A sigh of disappointment is what came out when the visage of her watcher came into view. At her disappointed look Giles couldn’t help but chuckle. “I’m guessing I’m not the person you were expecting.” amusement laced his tone as he didn’t even try to hide it. All he got was a glare and a point to the kitchen.
He continued to chuckle as he walked in the direction Buffy pointed. She tried to close the door but a hand stopped her. Xander’s head popped around the closing door. “Well that’s rude. I thought we were invited but seeing as your going to close the door on us…” he grinned goofily. Willow was behind him shaking her head, while Tara was lightly blushing.
Buffy did an internal face palm before stepping aside to let them in. Buffy’s inner bitch was about to come to the fore front. While Xander seemed like a nice guy he really needed some fashion tips. The shirt he was wearing was one of those cheap Hawaiian ones with bright colors. The khaki pants he was wearing helped his outfit but not by much. And Buffy was seriously about to buy this guy some shampoo. Other that that he would be cute. Willow dressed like she was still five with the jean overalls. She screamed innocence. Then Tara.
Buffy had been mostly paying attention to her face so she finally took the time to take in all of her. The girl wore a long skirt that reached her ankles. Combat boots on her feet. She wore a light blue sweater. Tara also pulled her hair back into a tie and left a bit on the side. It took every bit of Buffy’s will power to not just pull the girl into her arms.
Buffy decided to save herself the embarrassment and led her guests into the living room. Dawn was there playing her new DS she got from mom for Christmas. Dawn looked up when the group walked in. Immediately her eyes went to Xander. Uh Oh. Buffy knew that look. Love at first sight. She instantly dropped the DS and stood up to introduce herself.
“Hi I’m Dawn.” she only stuck her hand out for Xander. Buffy rolled her eyes and Tara and Willow tried not to giggle at the completely oblivious boy. What she saw in the greasy haired badly dressed boy she will never know. “Nice to meet you to Dawn I’m Xander. The blond is Tara and the red is Willow.” The girls just nodded when their names were mentioned.
Dawn spared them a glance before turning all of her attention back to Xander. Buffy thanked what ever deity watching as Giles walked out of the kitchen. Buffy for the first time took notice of the fact that the British gentleman was wearing something that wasn’t tweed. “Well I‘ll be damned.” He was dressed in dress pants and a button up shirt, not a stitch of tweed anywhere. Buffy smirked.
“Dinner is ready.” every head turned towards Giles. They stared before Dawn broke the ice. “Whoa Giles never thought I’d see you out of tweed. Mom must have called and threatened your tea.” Buffy couldn’t help it she burst out laughing, Giles started cleaning his glasses and, the trio looked on the scene in confusion and amusement. “You bet I did.”
Joyce was watching from the kitchen, sizing up Buffy’s new friends. She liked what she saw so far. Her daughter could pick the most kind hearted people she in a instant despite how they looked or acted. When they first met Faith, she going to admit it she didn’t like the girl. With her brash disrespectful attitude and tough visage who didn’t want to smack the girl a few time or several hundred.
Buffy broke down every wall the girl had. After seeing her break down crying Joyce’s heart went out to the girl. Eventually Faith became a third daughter to her. When she had called Giles about coming over she told him no tweed. Even though they were heading towards their 40’s he didn’t need to dress like he was that old. It is the 21st century a time for jeans and t-shirts.
“Alright everyone into the dinning room for dinner.”
Xander, Willow, and Tara nearly gaped at the spread on the table. It was packed with food. Xander thought he had died and gone to heaven. There was baked macaroni and cheese, corn bread, mash potatoes, glazed ham, green beans, corn on the cob, and a sweet potato casserole topped with melted marshmallows. And the smell…
“I made extra. Just to make sure I had enough for everyone.” Tara and Willow had one thought. “Even with all of them and Xander’s stomach they couldn’t finish this.” Joyce started to motion them to sit in which Xander wasted no time doing. “You didn’t have to cook all of this…” Joyce stopped Willow midway. “Don’t worry with Buffy here there wont be much left.” the said blond glared at her mother. “Oh don’t you even start. With the way eat I feel like I’m feeding a football team.”
They stared at Buffy in disbelief. There was no way that this small blond could eat this much. She who didn’t even look 100lb. “You cant, what, 90 pounds tops?” Xander asked. Buffy huffed. “I’m 109 I‘ll have you know.” She poked out her bottom lip and pouted. Tara had to admit she did look quite adorable. “Now now lets stop making fun of my human garbage disposal.”
“MOM!!!!”
Dinner turned out to be great. Buffy spent most of the time hiding the fact that she couldn’t keep her eyes off of Tara much to her mother’s amusement when she caught her around the 7th time she glanced the blonds way. Dawn of course ask Xander all kinds of questions about himself. Most of which made Buffy roll her eyes. Buffy discovered a lot about her new friends.
Willow just happened to be a wiz at math. Which is the subject she was failing in. She also was excellent using a computer. Joyce asked if she could help her set up the computer at her work. Xander seemed to never run out of jokes. Extremely corny jokes. He really was a nice guy. Though he did had the habit of eyeing Buffy, and Dawn noticed, eventually sending Buffy a glare. She sent back a shrug and a look that said ’don’t blame me I like the blond’
It turned out that Tara was even more surprising. Not only was she smart but she was also painted. And from the compliments and stories that Willow and Xander told she was good. This immediately got Joyce’s attention, since she now ran the gallery in town she actually asked Tara if she could see some of her work. The blond has only been here about 3 years. She lives with her mom too she wouldn't give any information about her dad. Buffy could sense it was a touchy subject.
Of course they asked all kinds of questions about Buffy. Most of which she couldn’t answer truthfully because of her calling. Giles noticed when Buffy looked Tara’s way her eyes would occasionally flash gold. Towards the end of the dinner there were now gold flecks in her eyes. He would need to have another talk with her, or invest in some contacts if this kept up.
~~7hours later~~
Buffy lay in bed. A large silly smile plastered on her face. Tara was just perfect in her eyes. Painfully shy, beautiful, a talented painter, smart, beautiful. Buffy sighed. “Wonder how fast will she run in the other direction if she knew who I once was.” she shook off those thoughts and fell into a sleep filled with warm blue eyes.
