Quiet. No sound. Dust motes danced on the shaft of sunlight flowing through the window.

With a sigh, Ray dropped his keys on the cluttered table and let his chin fall to his chest.

The silence deafened. It screamed out his loneliness. Battering against his already broken heart.

Missing her. Wanting her. Living without her. He'd never planned it this way. Never.

She wasn't supposed to leave. She promised. He promised. They promised.

The burning started behind his eyelids. But he pushed it away. No more tears. No more grief.

Today he saved a life. Today was a good day.
