Katara sat on the edge of the pier, her feet skimming the water below. The sun was just setting, bathing everything in an orange light. Katara and Zuko had faced only hours ago, her mother's killer. And now Katara was pondering whether or not she had done the right thing. Was it right that she hadn't taken the life of the man that took her mother's life? Or should she have killed him when she had the chance?
"Katara, are you okay?" said a voice behind her. Katara turned around to see Zuko standing a few feet behind her, looking at her with worry in his eyes. Katara shook her head and turned to look back down at the water.
"I promised never to do it again," she muttered.
"Do what?" Zuko asked. Katara sighed and said "Bloodbend. And then, I was more than willing to kill that man." Katara's hands balled into fists as she closed her eyes to fight back tears, "That monster." Zuko watched Katara's body shake as she fought back sobs. Then he did something Katara didn't expect. Katara's eyes flew open as she felt Zuko's arms wrap around her neck in a comforting hug. Katara's head spun around to look at him. His face was so close to hers that their cheeks touched.
"It's okay Katara," Zuko whispered softly, "It'll be okay." Katara turned in his arms to cry into Zuko's chest.
"Why couldn't I kill him?" she said angrily, "He deserved it."
"Because it's not you," Zuko said, stroking Katara's hair gently, "You're not a murderer." They sat their for a while, Zuko holding Katara's in her arms and letting her cry. Eventually her sobs sobbed died down to small whimpers.
"Zuko?" Katara asked quietly.
"Yes," Zuko asked. Katara looked up at him, her eyes red and puffy from crying and there were tears streaks down her face. But to Zuko, she looked beautiful, the setting sun giving her eyes and orange tint. Katara smiled at him.
"Thank you," she said, "For everything." It was Zuko's turn to be surprised when Katara leaned up toward him and gave him a soft kiss on his scarred cheek. Zuko blushed, avoiding Katara's gaze. He cleared his throat and muttered, "You're welcome." Katara giggled at Zuko's embarrassment.
"Do you mind if we stay like this a little longer?" Katara said, "It's...comforting." Zuko looked back into her eyes and said, "No problem." Katara settled back into Zuko's arms, her head resting against his chest. Zuko's chin was perched on top of Katara's head and together, they watched the sunset.
