Spell
Disclaimer: I don’t own Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, or any of that good stuff. I also don’t own Spell by Marie Digby!
A/N: While working on Spring Waltz I got an idea for a one shot and I just had to get it down while it’s fresh in my mind. It’s also my first song fic (at least I’m pretty sure you would classify this as a song fic) So I hope you guys enjoy!

“Naminé! I need you to sign this.” A red head placed a paper with blocks of text in front of a blonde haired girl. The girl known as Naminé looked up. “What’s this?”
“I’ll explain later. But right now I need you to sign this before it’s too late!” Kairi waved the paper around frantically until Naminé agreed. She took the paper once it was signed and looked at it with a beaming face. “Great! Come with me real quick.” She took Naminé by the hand and dragged her through the school halls.
“So can you explain to me what that was about?” Naminé asked as they stopped in front of box attached to a classroom door. Kairi slipped in the sheet of paper into the small slit of the box. “Was that the paper I just signed?” She questioned cautiously.
“That’s right. You and I have just been entered into the 13th annual school talent show!” She smiled brightly while a look of horror slowly contorted onto Naminé’s face.
“You did what!?” Naminé shouted. “No, no, no! Get that paper out!” She tried to squeeze her petite fingers into the hole but to no avail. “Can’t we tell the teacher to take it out? We entered by mistake?”
Kairi waved a pointer finger at her friend in a lecture sort of away. “Once you sign and it’s in the box there is absolutely no backing out. It was in the fine print Naminé. You really should read things before you sign.” Kairi laughed at her slyness.
“You tricked me!” Naminé yelled causing it to reverberate throughout the halls. “I don’t even have a talent.”
“Naminé I wouldn’t do this unless I knew we were fully prepared. I’m excellent with the piano and why I bet you have most angelic voice around for miles.” Kairi tried to suck up to her.
“Y-you want me to sing!? On a stage!? In front of people!?” Naminé felt dizzy and started to sit down.
Her friend let out a sigh. “We’ve got to get you to come out of your shell sometime. Think of this as training.” She nodded liking her wording for the talent show.
“Training for what?” Naminé asked as she placed her hand over her forehead to check her temperature.
“What else?” Kairi asked as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “To win over Roxas’s heart.” She threw her fist in triumph and looked down to see if Naminé was as excited as she was, only to find her passed out on the ground. “Naminé?” No response. “Oh dear, we definitely have work to do.”

Kairi pushed Naminé into the auditorium. “I don’t want to.” Naminé flailed her arms around in order to escape from Kairi. “I had no consent to this at all!”
“Naminé come on. It’s just an audition. Look there’s barely even a group in the audience.” Naminé and Kairi both looked at the seats that had people eager to watch the audition. You could count them all one hand. “See? It’s not that bad.”
“There is a freaking mob there!” Naminé said trying to escape but Kairi caught her by the collar of the shirt. “You’re exaggerating again.” She sighed and pulled her up to the stage.
“Kairi!” The girls turned around to see a familiar face, brown spiked hair and all. Kairi beamed.
“Sora! You actually came? It’s just an audition after all.” Naminé could see she meant the opposite of what she was saying.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He smiled. Naminé felt a bit envious of their relationship but was happy for them nonetheless.
“Oh wait…” She thought. “Sora you have got to go!” Naminé stared down at her feet as her faced turned multiple shades of red.
“Naminé are you embarrassed?” Sora asked. “Don’t worry. I bet you’re an amazing singer. Probably much better than me.” He said trying to sound encouraging. “That’s not hard to beat.” Kairi added in teasing him.
Naminé’s face lightened. “Just don’t look at me…or I really will faint up there.” She noted as she headed towards the stage. Sora started to follow but Kairi pulled him back.
“Sora sweetie, not to nag or anything, but where’s our special guest?” She questioned him and he chuckled nervously. “Well he said he was coming…he just didn’t know when.” Kairi slapped her hand on her forehead but turned and kissed Sora on the forehead. “You get a kiss for effort.” She smiled and followed Naminé.
“Alright, so Kairi and Naminé are doing a piano and singing piece?” The teacher eyed her clipboard. “Ah yes you’ll be going on after the magic act audition. The third one that is. Too many magicians this year.” She frowned at the thought. “I don’t suppose you have the actual song you will be planning to perform yet? Keep in mind I need to approve of it.”
Kairi nodded. “Don’t worry. If we pass these auditions we’ll get our song to you right away.” Naminé nodded in agreement as well. Kairi turned towards Naminé. “Please don’t mess up the auditions just because you don’t want to get on stage. Please?” she begged.
“I’m not that mean.” Naminé pouted at the fact that her friend would think that.
“I know. Just checking.” She smiled and took Naminé’s hand. “If we pass I’ll let you pick the song ok?” Naminé rolled her eyes noting that that was hardly a consolation for embarrassing herself.
The two sat down in the front row with all the other people waiting to try out for the talent show. Some put the two girls in awe while others made them want to fall asleep. Finally they were on deck and were behind the curtains getting ready to go next.
In the middle of the magic act taking place before them, a loud noise interrupted the display and heads turned to see the auditorium door opening. Naminé ignored it and focused all of her energy into picturing a people-less audience.
Finally the teacher called the two girls. Kairi headed towards the piano chair and gave a thumbs up to Naminé. She gulped and looked up at the roof. She inhaled and started to sing a simple but short song.
“Kairi’s piano playing is dead on.” Naminé thought. “Just breathe. You can do this. You’re almost nearing the end.” She told this over and over to herself in her head until she finally let the last note of the song out.
When she finished there was a scattered applause and whistling could be heard. Naminé finally looked down to see where Sora was and sure enough it was him who was standing up and whistling. To her astonishment next to him also applauding was his best friend. A handsome guy with blonde hair that was almost as spiky as Sora’s. Not to mention, he was Naminé’s biggest crush, Roxas.
She could feel her face rise in temperature and ran off the stage and took the back door exit out of the auditorium.

After the auditions Kairi found Naminé in the choir room just sitting with her feet dangling back and forth. “Good news.” She said as she made her way towards the girl. “We made it! So now you can pick any song you want to sing for the show.”
Naminé stared at her feet which had now halted their swinging. “Did you plan that?” She asked knowing Kairi knew what she was referring too.
“A little.” Kairi answered. “Why are you so embarrassed?” She sat down next to Naminé. “Was it just because Roxas was there?”
“Not just him…but mostly him.” Naminé took a deep breath to calm herself. “You know how I get around people. I’m always so jittery, and afraid. I don’t speak up and I don’t like too. When it comes to Roxas, that becomes ten, no hundred’s time worse. I’m a girl who can’t utter a greeting to the person she likes most. That’s the only way I could get his attention too. I mean I’m so plain she thought. A guy like him would have no interest in me. What will singing do?” She sighed. “Nothing, that’s what.”
Kairi smiled at her friend and patted her on the back. “There, there. You’d be surprised. You were too busy trying to avoid any eye contact that you didn’t see what Sora and I saw. Did you know that Roxas was on the edge of his seat the whole time? Sora said it as if he were entranced by your voice.” Kairi chuckled. “It’s as if your voice has an air of magic about it. You just have to show it a little more.” She smiled, stood up, and held out a hand for her friend. “No ordinary girl can do that.”
Naminé smiled and grabbed Kairi’s hand to get out of her chair. “Even still…”
“No buts’.” Kairi declared. “A week from today you sing for yourself up there and nobody else. Show everyone you aren’t just Naminé, but that you’re Naminé with a voice. If it so happens that Roxas falls in love while you’re up there…well so be it!” Kairi clapped her hands loving her plans. She grabbed Naminé’s hand. “Let’s go pick out a song shall we?”
Naminé smiled appreciating her friend’s advice even though she still doubted herself a bit. “Ok.” She agreed.

The night of the talent show quickly came and both Naminé and Kairi were backstage getting ready. “So Sora said that Roxas will be coming. Don’t freak out ok?”
“When you put it that way how am I not supposed to freak out?” Naminé asked but knew she wouldn’t get answer.
“Also before I forget,” Kairi moved on. “I’m going to dedicate my performance on the piano to Sora. That’s ok right?” Naminé nodded. Kairi bent down and fixed Naminé’s hair. “We’ll be going on soon. Ready?”
Naminé shook her head. “I’ll never be ready.” She took a deep breath but followed her as they were performing next.
Before she knew it, she was on the stage with a mic in her shaking hands. She looked at Kairi who was already seated at the piano chair. She leaned in and spoke into the mic in front of her. “I’d like to dedicate this to someone very special to me that is in the audience right now.” She smiled and placed her hands in position to play the song Naminé had picked out.
Naminé looked out into the audience and could see the outline of Sora. Next to him she could barely see Roxas. “Use your voice.” Naminé thought. “I-I too wish to dedicate this performance to someone.” She looked at the mic. “H-he’s in this audience as well.” She blushed and looked away from the crowd and at Kairi to signal her to start playing.
Naminé brought the microphone hesitantly up to her mouth and looked above the audience as she started to sing.
Spotlight shining brightly
On my face
And I can't see a thing
And yet I feel you , looking my way
An empty stage
With nothing but this girl
Who's singing this simple melody
And wearing her heart on her sleeve
And right now...
I have you
For a moment I can tell I've got you
Cause your lips don't move
And something is happening
Cause your eyes tell me the truth
I've put a spell over you.
There was a small break where you could only hear Kairi’s piano playing. Naminé took a breath. “You dedicated it to him right? Y-you can do it.” She encouraged herself as she tilted her head down so that she could see Roxas’s features even through the bright lights on the stage.
Beauty emanates from every word that you say
And capture the deepest thoughts
In the purest and simplest of ways
But you see
I'm not that graceful like you
Nor am I as eloquent
But just a simple melody
Can change the way that you see me
And right now...
I have you
For a moment I can tell I've got you
Cause your lips don't move
And something is happening
Cause your eyes tell me the truth
I've put a spell over you…
Another moment where only Kairi played the piano. Naminé looked at Roxas and stood there shocked to see him stand up and walk away from the audience. Naminé bit her lip but looked up realizing she would start singing again. “That’s right, sing for yourself. That’s why you’re up here.” She took another breath.
All my life I stumble
But up here I am just perfect
Perfect as I’ll ever be...
I have you
For a moment I can tell I've got you
Cause your lips don't move
And something is happening
Cause your eyes tell me the truth
I've put a spell over you…
Kairi finished the song and Naminé’s shoulders relaxed as the last note was played. Her head held high as she heard the applause knowing that they were clapping for her. But her heart sank as there was no trace of the person she sung her heart out for.
The two got off stage and headed to the back. “Naminé, you did it without collapsing!” Kairi hugged her friend tightly.
“Don’t speak so soon.” Naminé smiled. “You were just as excellent Kairi.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” The girls turned around to see Sora with a flower in hand. “For the best pianist up there.” He handed it to Kairi and she blushed. “You had a very lovely voice Naminé.”
“Oh thank you.” Naminé blushed but was content. She turned around to find a rose in front of her. She followed the hand that was extending out holding the rose to see it was Roxas. She took a step back surprised to see he hadn’t left.
“That was a great performance, Naminé.” Roxas smiled making Naminé smile as well. “I missed the last part though. I wanted to get this for you.” He handed the flower to her and she accepted it with great care. “But because of it, I missed the last part of your singing.” He smiled at her causing Naminé to blush even more. “Will you sing to me again?”
