“Auntie Rosie?” The curious face of my niece looked up at me, her eyes burning bright with a question.

I smiled and ruffled her hair. “Yes, Nessie?”

“Are you and Uncle Emmett married? Because I was talking to Mommy and Daddy and Auntie Alice and she said something about weddings, and Daddy laughed and said you’d been married lots of times, but he and Mommy have only been married once?”

Three weddings. Three weddings in nearly seventy years. Doesn’t seem like that much to me, personally. But I liked weddings. If you asked Edward, he’d probably say it was because I liked dressing up and having people look at me, but that’s not true. Well, not completely. I do like the dressing up, but I like the happiness and the comfort even more. I like being able to walk down the aisle and see Emmett and think ‘He loves me. He is still prepared to spend eternity with me.’ And then I realise just how lucky I am.

Wedding number three is the most recent, just before we came to Forks, about 8 or 9 years ago now. We were in Alaska, with the Denali’s. I had my big white wedding, with the many guests and the beautiful dress, all glistening in the Alaskan snow. All our guests were vampires, so Alice timed it perfectly. As soon as Emmett and I were pronounced husband and wife the sun appeared over the top of the hill. She’d made me have little gems or sequins sewn into my dress, so that it glittered as well, I realised afterwards. It was beautiful.

Wedding number two was about thirty years before that. It was the first of any Cullen wedding that Alice planned. The night Emmett proposed she wouldn’t sit still, we all wondered what was wrong with her. When Emmett and I came downstairs she was so happy. She hugged us both and then began on the wedding plans immediately. It was amazing, that wedding. Alice planned it well.

But for me, wedding number one is the most important. I can visualise perfectly the night Emmett proposed to me. He was traditional, got down on one knee and pulled out the tiny box with the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. The sight of him on one knee, with such a cautiously hopeful face would’ve brought tears to my eyes.

‘Rosalie, my Rosalie.’ He was nervous, the nerves showing in his voice. ‘I love you, Rosalie. You mean more to me than anything in this whole world. You are my angel, my beautiful angel who saved me from death and brought me to heaven, because heaven is where you are. Rosalie Hale, will you marry me?’

He fell silent, waiting for my reply.

My voice was choked up when I spoke. ‘Emmett, heaven’s worth nothing without you. I love you forever.’

I held out my hand, and he put the ring on, and the smile he gave me was worth more to me than anything else.

We had to tell the family. Emmett had engineered it so we were alone in the house. Of course, Edward knew as soon as he got within a few miles of us, but he didn’t tell Carlisle and Esme.

They were, of course, ecstatic. Esme ran and hugged us both; Carlisle hugged me and clapped Emmett on the back. ‘You’re engaged.’ They said, ‘Congratulations.’ And we smiled and laughed, and I ignored the tightening of my stomach, the twist of nervousness. If I’d have been human, my heart would have been thumping so loud. The last time I was engaged was to Royce, and how that ended...

I rushed through the wedding plans. The entire wedding was organised in a few months. Emmett was amazed by the length of time it took to plan all the other weddings compared to that one. I felt I had to reach the wedding; I was so scared of being engaged that first time. Only Edward knew, although I thought Esme realised something was up.

My fear of engagement still hits me sometimes, but thankfully it was reduced so much by the first wedding. It was just as beautiful as all the others, though it seems more so in my mind. Emmett was mine, mine forever. He loved me. To me, it’s my most important wedding, because of what it symbolises: Mine and Emmett’s love. In my mind, my first wedding means the most to me.

I smiled at my little niece. “Yes, Nessie. I’ve been married a couple of times, sure. But the first time meant the most.”

Nessie smiled and ran off.

Emmett appeared behind me, and slipped his arm around my waist. “Love you.” He whispered in my ear. “And the first wedding went the most to me too.”

I turned and kissed him. “Love you too.”

I thought Rose would have a bit of an engagement phobia, after everything in her past. This was written for SteneMichele’s Twilight competition.

I hope you all like, please R&R!!
