This story is all leafygirl's fault. She made the comment "Has anyone written a fic about the Hokage ordering Sakura to get pregnant by Kakashi? Couldn't you just see that? There's no way they want that bloodline to die out." and this story was born.
I don't know how long this will be, but I do know that the first few chapters will be skipping over a few years to make things nice and compliant with age laws.
This takes place a little after the battle with Pein, with the assumption that Naruto wins and Kakashi is NOT dead!
Beta'd now, by Leafygirl Thanks a bunch!
It hurt. Whatever the sensation was, it hurt badly. Through the darkness that surrounded him there were three things he could be sure of. The first was, if he hurt, he wasn't dead. The second being that He was very sure that he hurt. The third thing was that the world was pink. There was nothing more to focus on but the pink and the hurting. As he lay there, he was able to reconstruct some sort of order in his mind. Hatake Kakashi, shinobi of the leaf, that's who he was.
The pink he couldn't focus on must be one of his beloved companions, Sakura. And the sweet relief from some of the pain led him to believe that she was here. Best thing the girl had ever done for him lately. She's left him, like Sasuke had. "No," he admonished himself, "I left her to find her own teacher, just like Sasuke had."
He lay there floating, trying to remember what happened. He hoped that Choji was able to get away with his father. He'd almost died trying to make sure they did; he thought he did die. He probably was still dying, if the pain was any clue. If Sakura had the time to heal a old man like him, then he hoped that meant that the battle was over and Konoha had won. Kakashi suddenly realized that he was very tired. It went beyond the physical. He was sick with it. He didn't want to think about it, but couldn't help it. The new names that would be added to the memorial. He'd memorize them, ingrain them in his brain and wonder, like he did every day, when his would appear up there. When could stop visiting and finally rest with them all?
Kakashi's sense of smell was coming back to him. He still couldn't get his eye to focus; he was paralyzed. It was like he was trying to hear underwater, but his sniffer was starting to wake up from whatever slumber it'd been in. Sharp antiseptic smells assaulted him and if he could have rolled his eyes, he would have. Hospitals were the bane of every ninja's life. Except the medics -- no probably even the medics disliked them for having to deal with old, easily injured men like him. He settled back and waited for them to get to it. Medic-nins, were always slow, the lot of them. The only one he recognized was Sakura; he'd just have to put his life in her hands and hope that she didn't mangle his pretty face too much. He wondered if she was ever going to stop using the same scent as Pakkun did. "What is that scent called anyway?"
Little by little sensations started to come back, his eye started to focus, his hearing became clearer. Cool chakra filled his body. "I wonder if you could taste chakra, what would it taste like?" Kakashi paused. "It'd be some kind of cool mint." He felt cool and clammy, laying on the hard surface. Wherever they had placed him, he wasn't lying comfortably on a cushioned stretcher. Felt more like cold metal. Pain erupted suddenly from his gut, his body bowed and Kakashi felt his heart beating erratically. He tried to scream; whatever they were doing it hurt. Moments passed and he felt that he was looking out through a slow moving camera. His eye focused, but he was only able to get second long snapshots of what was going on. The entire world was in shades of grey except for the pink hair of his nurse. "She doesn't look so good," he observed. However, Sakura never looked more powerful to him in her life. Sweaty in her medic clothes, with bags under her eyes, holding his life in her hands, and besides the pain he felt a moment ago, she was putting him back together. His blinking became more controlled as his heartbeat steadied. He still didn't have his body under any semblance of control. He was still so tired.
He watched Sakura look up to his face and say his name. She put her hands over his ears and with a pop, he surfaced from the watery audio world he'd been in.
"Kakashi-sense, blink twice if you can understand me?" Sakura said.
He obliged her and noted her smile of relief. Her eyes filled with un-shed tears and one dropped on his face before she could reign them back. Her thumb moved over his cheek where the tear had landed and wiped it away.
"You're not out of trouble just yet, but soon you'll be fine. You scared us, If they hadn't brought you in... but I'll give you a sound thrashing for that after we get you healed up. You can't leave us yet, Sensei." Sakura brought her hand up and smoothed out his brow. "Go to sleep. We'll be here when you wake."
He reveled in the sensation of touches and feelings that were not painful. It soothed him and the sounds around him faded as he slipped into sleep.
Sakura lay her hands down on the autopsy gurney in relief. "Lets get him somewhere comfortable, preferably out of the morgue and into one of the rooms upstairs. I know we're full, but it's the least we can do for him." Expecting her orders to be followed she beckoned to her medic team, leaving Kakashi in the care of the nurses. For her team, the day wouldn't be over until all of the patients in the hospital had been dealt with. She'd find him later. There were still people she needed to locate, needed to check up on. Entering an elevator, she rested her head against the back wall and her team filed in behind her.
"Are you all right Sakura-chan?" A shorter brown haired woman put a hand on Sakura's shoulder.
"No Atsuko, I'm not right, but I'll be good enough to see this through." She turned her head to look at her older team mate. For the past year, she had been put in a medic team, their training focused on emergency high-level healing. In case situations like this happened, Tsunade-shishou needed them to be prepared. They were the first team to be formed like this. Trained medics, pulled from their traditional 4 man teams to make an all medic team in times of crisis. Together they had the same status as the doctors in the hospital, but their mission also included learning different medical techniques in foreign lands their other team's missions took them too.
"We're lucky someone found him," a low baritone voice pointed out, "If that kid morgue assistant hadn't recognized that he was still alive..." His voice trailed off at the obvious conclusion.
"I know Juro," joked the youngest voice there, "Small miracles, you think?"
"We'll need all the miracles we can get today, Michi" said Sakura, trying to pull herself out of the morose mood she had been falling into in the aftermath of the battle. "We need to keep focused, spread the news that we won, that the Hokage is still alive, and plans are already being made to rebuild. It will stamp out the immediate fear the civilians will go through. The last thing we need today are riots. Suzo." Sakura looked to her left to find the girl just standing there, watching her, with her slightly older brother Juro at her back like always. " I want you and Juro to take the main lead in this. Just make sure to drop the hints where the people can hear them. Nurses stations would be the best place. They're always gossiping."
So far it had been a good experiment. In the 6 months they had formed a team, all of them had separately brought back invaluable knowledge from new plants and jutsu's, to new ways of surgery. There were 5 of them in total, pulled from Chunin and Jonin teams and Sakura was their leader. She never wanted to have to participate in this practical application of their squad like to triage in the village, but at least they'd been prepared, somewhat. One by one they split off onto different floors of the hospital and back into the chaos caused by Pein.
