The Nicest Thing, Vignette 1
All I know is that you're so nice,
You're the nicest thing I've seen.
She woke up on a hard bed of dirt in the middle of the woods. Her eyes quickly adjusted to the bright sun reflecting on every single speck of dust floating around the trees in lazy swirls. Slowly sitting up, she leaned against a tree while looking down at herself. Even in the shade of a giant tree, she could see just how drab the dress was that covered her otherwise naked body. Touching the fabric with disdain, she wondered just how filthy her appearance must be.
It was odd, she had no idea just how she had wound up in the woods. No matter how hard she tried, she could not remember anything. Everything was gone; she was empty and completely lost. Her hand suddenly flew up to her throat as she realized something was very wrong. The burning in her throat that had begun when she woke was now to the point of searing.
But she didn't understand; what was wrong? Why was her throat burning? She began to hyperventilate, but then slowly realized that she needed no breath. On the verge of ripping at her throat, the confusion inside her swiftly turned into a full on panic. Jumping up, she gripped the lowest branch of the nearest tree for support. She gasped as the branch splintered into pieces. Frightened by her unknown strength she backed away from the tree as quickly as she could. This act did nothing to calm her nerves, as her speed had her across a clearing in an immeasurable fraction of a moment.
As quickly as her attack occurred, it ended with her collapsing to her knees in grief, tears unshed. She ran her hands through her short, choppy hair. Looking up at the cloudy sky, she suddenly found herself on a street corner. It was night; the only illumination was from the street light above. She looked around expectantly; she seemed to be waiting for someone. If she had been able to breathe it would have caught in her throat- walking towards her was the most handsome man she had ever seen. Very pale, with wildly unkempt blonde hair; he was coming straight towards her. As he stepped up to her, he was bathed in the light from above. Taking her hand in his, she looked up into his face. If his red eyes and scar lines were supposed to scare her, they ended up doing the opposite. Her still heart seemed to race as he bent down softly touching her cheek. Leaning into his hand, she heard him say barely above a whisper, "My Alice."
The vision came and went so quickly, she hardly had time to memorize the stranger's face. The man had calmed her without her even realizing it. Perhaps he had done it on purpose. He had looked into her eyes with such love and compassion; she had no alternative but to relax. Even though she had no idea who the man in her vision was, it didn't matter. Alice felt pulled to him; an intense longing filled her as she wondered who he might be. She may not know who she was, or what she was now, but she knew her name. The handsome stranger had called her, Alice, his Alice. Smiling to herself for the first time since she could remember, she knew one day that she, Alice, would be his.
