The Chronicles of Alexis - Chapter One: Introductions

Jim concentrated on the road ahead of him, as he carefully manoeuvred from one lane to another.

“Jim?”

“Yes…”

“Is your name Jim?”

Jim couldn’t help stifle the laugh that was building slowly in his chest.

“Yes… What did you think my name was?”

“Daddy.” The little girl said matter of factly.

“Well, I’m your Daddy, but my name’s Jim, like your name’s Alexis,” he explained softly.

“Oh. So is Mommy’s name not really Mommy?” Alexis asked, kicking the seat in front of her.

Jim smiled, as he quickly glanced in the rearview mirror at the little girl behind him. “Well she’s your mommy, but her name’s Pam.”

“Oh.”

“Why all the questions?”

“Just cos.”

“Just cos, huh?” Jim laughed quietly, loving moments like these when it was just the two of them.

Alexis let out a soft little sigh. “What about Grandma and Grandpa and Nana and Papa?”

“You know this.” Jim explained gently, reaching his arm behind him to still her swinging legs. “Grandma and Grandpa are my mommy and daddy and Nana and Papa are Mommy’s mommy and daddy.”

“Oh! So is Grandma’s name grandma or mommy?”

Jim signalled and pulled into their driveway and shut off the engine.

‘Daddy?’

‘Yes, honey?’

‘Why are you hitting your head against the steering wheel?’
