Harry sat in a train compartment at the end of the train alone, heading back to Privet Drive as usual. He had once believed when the war was over he would be able to leave this place behind him and never have to return. Hadn’t he been told since he started at Hogwarts that he was only being forced to stay in a home where he was starved and treated worse then a house elf, beaten when he made a mistake, because of the blood wards? Voldemort was gone as were all of the loyal Death Eaters, any who unlike Severus and Lucius had not taken an oath of loyalty as spies, had died through their mark when he had died. But Sirius was dead, killed during the final battle which had taken on a Hogsmeade weekend in March, dying little Lily and James had, to protect their son. And Remus was in the hospital and they had no idea when he would be out, having been in a coma until recently, and Harry had not been allowed to even see him.

He had thought about the Burrow but he was not surprised he had not received an invite to come stay with them that summer. Ron and Harry had been having issues when Harry started to talk to Draco for he turned out to be on their side, and what little of their friendship was left had dissipated. Ginny had realized he was gay and had refused to speak to him, accusing him of leading her on, and Hermione seemed to have found the way to deal with the tension between friends by siding with the Weasleys. The only Weasleys Harry had even spoken to since March were the twins, Molly and Arthur dealing with the death of their son Percy.

Neville and Luna sat in the compartment with him, the only real company he seemed to have. Now that he was no longer the boy who lived he seemed to have lost any popularity. Harry had been in the final battle but it was not he alone who took down Voldemort in the end, Dumbledore and Moody were at his side for it and it had been in the end Moody who had cast the curse to kill him for Harry had not had the stomach to do it.

Neville was trying to pick up his spirits. “Gran is trying to get custody of you for the summer you know? Hopefully you will be with us soon.”

Harry was surprised but he was touched. “I doubt the headmaster will allow it but I appreciate that Nev.”

He and Luna had only become friends that year, her dad helping him through his newspaper, but suddenly she had become one of the few he could rely on. She and Neville were dating or at least coming close to it. Harry remembered Neville on the first train ride to school, looking for his toad, and with the rememberall. Neville had definitely grown and even his Gran had told him how proud his parents would have been if they had seen how he had fought during the final battle.

As the train pulled into the station he noticed the Weasleys as he got of but for the first time since he met the woman, Molly did not move to hug him. Harry had not really been expecting it honestly but it still hurt. He said goodbye to Neville and Luna and went to get his trunk on a cart as well as Hedwig.

He was shocked when he found someone helping him with the trunk and he turned to see Fred. “Need a hand here Harry?”

Again Harry had a flash of his first year, for the twins had helped him onto the train. “Thanks Fred. Are you sure you two should not be over there?”

They looked towards where their family stood and Fred shook his head, George pulling Harry into a headlock. They reminded their silent partner that they considered him a brother and if they were older they would have offered him a place to live but no one would give them custody. Harry found comfort that the twins still saw him like brother, and though they eventually did head back to their own family, he hoped it would continue. Fred and George though had told him that he was to write to them all of the time and if he needed some help when he was stuck with his relatives for the summer.

He found his Uncle waiting for him when he went through the barrier and he grunted. “Get your ass to the car boy or we will leave you behind.”

Harry had never expected a better response then that. “Yes Uncle.”

He was surprised only that the couple had greed to take him in when it was no longer needed. Harry owned a home, he found out that the vault from his parents was a trust for an inheritance he would get at seventeen, but also he had inherited the Black empire from Sirius when he died. But he was a minor so he needed a guardian who was no in the hospital and for now it was them. Back at the house his things except for Hedwig were once again locked under the stairs and he was dragged up the stairs to his bedroom which as always had locks all over the door.

Vernon pulled him into the room and kicked Harry hard behind the knees making him crash down on the bed. His Uncle smacked him a few times with one of the books in the room, a sharp crack across the head and then through the book down on the bed.

He sneered down at his nephew. “The rules will be changing now that your little war is done. You will be earning your keep here.”
