"One's life is not as fixed as one believes. Surprises may lie in store for you, the unexpected often tends to happen, sometimes bringing in its train the most delightful change in one's life or circumstances"

-Elizabeth Aston

Prologue

Bella's POV

It was winter, as it always seemed to be here in the cold town of Forks. Today was particularly cold, as we drove through the never-ending green scenery that surrounded the town, on our way to school. Today, we were pretending to be new high school students.

Forks High School was the small town's only high school. This, accompanied with its small student body, basically guaranteed that we were going to draw attention. However, this was hardly new for us; people were curious about us wherever we went.

Our way of life was very different from most other vampires. We were an unstoppable coven – eight strong powerful vampires each with a very unique ability.

Peter, Camellia and Diego were the oldest members of our family, all of them just over 300 years old. They created the rest of us, or at least, they created us as we are now.

The rest of the family consisted of Richard, Charles, Henry, Eric and I. We were all over 100 years old, but still looked like young beautiful teenagers. Covens this large were extremely rare, as vampires usually traveled as individuals or in a coven of two or three.

We were also different from others because we didn't drink human blood, but instead preferred to drink from wild animals. This lifestyle was very hard for us, as the blood of animals is not nearly as satisfying as that of humans, but at least we weren't monsters.

We had only just moved to the small isolated town of Forks. With a minimum amount of sunshine, we weren't forced to stay locked up indoors all day, which was a big bonus for us.

This wasn't the first time we had posed as high school students. We were constantly moving around, going to new high schools, so I found it easy to take on my new identity.

Fitting in, on the other hand, was going to be a totally different story.

"We're here!" Eric said, bringing me back to reality.

We were parked in the school's car park. All of the students had their eyes glued to our car. As I peered through the tinted windows of the Porsche, I noticed that every other car in the lot was very old, so even before we stepped out, our car had gained us plenty of attention.

And God, I hated attention. It meant you had to try twice as hard to act normal.

Henry turned to look at me with a concerned look on his face. "What's wrong Bella?"

I shrugged. "Nothing, first day of school just has me nervous, that's all "I replied, smiling.

"Yeah, right, "he chuckled to himself, getting out of the car.

By now almost the whole school was gathered around looking at us. I took a deep breath and got out, then suddenly realized the atmosphere was very tense.

"Vampires," Richard whispered anxiously, but loud enough for the rest of us to hear with our pronounced senses. I automatically cast a shield around my family and myself, preventing any other vampire from using their ability against us. My talent had come in very handy whenever we had come into contact with other covens.

My eyes darted around the crowd, and then I saw them. There were five of them, standing back from the crowd, staring at us.

There were two females and three males. The first one to catch my attention was a huge bear-looking guy, grinning at us.

Next to him was a blonde; beautiful beyond belief. I guessed beauty was probably her vampire attribute. Next to her was the other female, shorter with pixie-like hair, with an amused expression on her face. She was holding hands with who I guessed was her partner. He looked very tense, with blonde hair and good-looking features like the rest. The last male had reddish hair, and he looked like he was focusing very hard on something. His beauty made me do a double take. I had seen plenty of vampires before, all with pronounced good looks, but this one went beyond them. I tore my eyes away, scolding myself, acting like I was some silly teenager.

And that's when I noticed it; these vampires had the same colored eyes as us. But how could that be? Their eyes were meant to be red like any other vampire, but here they were, the five of them, staring at us with their golden eyes.

Can it be? That these vampires had chosen to live the same 'vegetarian' lifestyle as us? What were they doing here?

As we stared at them and they stared back, we were all thinking the same thing.

Who were they?
