Preface: Don’t Breathe

The silence rang loud in my ears, and I wished I could hear what Alex and the others did. Something was lurking down the darkened corridor and I was oblivious to what it was. We were supposed to remain quiet but how could I, a human, remain silent? Alex could stop breathing; my beating heart would give us away in a second. This could be the end of everything we fought for.

Blindly I reached out, my hand in search of Alex’s cold one. I pawed at the air hoping to crash into her, but there was nothing there. Panic swept over me, as I couldn’t find where she was standing. It was true she could stop breathing and be perfectly silent, how did I know that she was still around me at all? I had to believe that Alex wouldn’t leave me alone here in this damned place. Not when there were other more dangerous creatures wandering about.

Something shuffled that wasn’t me. How far away it was I couldn’t tell, the corridor stretched on and on, and the acoustics were great. It could have echoed from over a dozen of yards away or a few feet away. The point was something moved and it wasn’t exactly comforting. I continued to fling my arms out around me wildly still hoping Alex would grab a hold of them. I wasn’t that stupid as to shout or even whisper her name. Maybe that was what I heard, Alex moving about. Then again, she was normally silent. Could it have been one of the others?

I tried to calm myself down so my frantic heart rate wouldn’t end up getting me killed. It was a stupid idea to come here. It was a stupid idea to fancy the thought of coming here. Whose idea was this again? I wanted to kill them myself before I was killed.

There, again the shuffling. Like light footsteps, the footsteps of a vampire. I decided to try my luck and as low as I could I whispered into the black.

“Alex?”

I stumbled backward to the ground as a sudden growl erupted from the darkness and what once sounded like light footsteps evolved into a fast run, still light and airy but I knew what was coming at me. The intense growling also evolved into snarling. That was when I knew that this would be the end. I was going to die here underground, and without having Alex by my side or seeing her face one last time.
