A/N - Hey peoples! This is my second fic, and it’s a sequel to my first, called “The Great Beyond”. It’s not really necessary that you read it, but it’s not particularly long, so it would be worth giving it a read before this one, to get an idea of the background to this.

Enjoy! And make me feel happy by pressing that lovely green button at the bottom and reviewing :D

Also, I’ve decided to recommend a song for each chapter. It may or may not be relevant to chapter, and will probably be just whichever one I was listening to while writing, but I dunno, it seems like a good idea :)

Song = This Is Your Life - The Killers (just because it’s similar to the title, and it’s one of my fave songs ever)

Disclaimer - I don’t own Grey’s Anatomy, Bones or House, M.D. I wish I did though. I do own all the new characters though!

Chapter One - Julienne Grey, This Is Your Life.

Julienne Shepherd awoke with a start to the sound of her alarm blaring at her bedside. It was 6 am. She groaned, but pulled herself out of bed, reminding herself of what day it was. It was her first day as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Not only was she starting a new career, but she had changed her surname to her mother Meredith’s maiden name, so that she wouldn’t be forever associated with her parents’ achievements. Her father Derek was the Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace and Meredith was the Head of Neurosurgery, the position her father had held until his promotion to Chief. She wanted to continue the family’s neurosurgery tradition, but didn’t want to be treated differently because of her parents’ positions in the hospital. So, from that day on, she was going to be Julienne Grey. Her two best friends Heather Sloan and Andy Hunt were also starting off their intern years alongside her and had the same problem, so they’d changed to Grey and Yang, respectively. Julienne and Heather were cousins anyway, so the “same-name thing”, as Heather had put it, could be explained away truthfully.

Julienne dressed herself quickly and headed down to the kitchen, where she found Derek making pancakes.

“Dad, what are you doing?” She asked.

“I’m making pancakes for my daughter’s first day as an intern. Because, seeing as I can give her any special treatment at work, I’m just going to have to make up for it at home.” Derek replied with a smile. He remembered Meredith’s first day as an intern. It hadn’t exactly started off very well, but looking back, he thanked God he’d met her the night before. Otherwise, they may not have ever gotten together through work. He’d aged considerably since then, with more than a few grey hairs in his once near-black hair but, according to Meredith, he was still seriously “McDreamy”. “You’re sure you don’t want a lift to work?” He asked his daughter.

“Dad, we’ve been through this. People can’t know I’m your daughter. I don’t want people thinking I got into the program through nepotism.” Julienne said, exasperated. “Anyway, I didn’t learn to drive for no reason.”

“Okay, honey. You know, it’s kind of pointless, because all the attendings know who you are anyway.”

“But Dad, the residents and interns don’t. I know the attendings will be professional and all, but you know how immature and judgmental people my age can be. I mean, I’d be “The Chief’s Daughter” my whole life. I went through the same process as all of them, and was offered a place based on merit, but would they believe me when I tell them that? Especially because I want to be a neurosurgeon.”

“Okay, okay. I was just pointing it out, Dr. Grey.” He laughed, bringing over a stack of pancakes for the two of them. As if awoken by the smell of the pancakes, Meredith immediately appeared in the doorway.

“Hey Mom.” Julienne greeted her.

“Hey Jules. Excited about today?” Meredith asked her.

“Do you need to ask?” Julienne said, smiling.

“I guess not. You haven’t talked more about anything since I was pregnant with the boys.”

“Ugh, don’t remind me about that. I cannot believe I was so excited about having two brothers.”

“C’mon, you love them.” Derek said, taking a bite out of a pancake.

“Yeah, but they’re still brothers.” Julienne said.

“Hmm, but I bet you miss them.” Meredith teased.

“I email them everyday. Well, Alex everyday, Mark about weekly ‘cos that’s how often he checks his inbox.” Julienne said between bites of pancake. “Plus, Alex’ll be back next year for his internship anyway. That’s not too long. And Mark will be back the year after.” Alex was studying Medicine at Johns Hopkins, where Julienne had gone. Mark was studying Medicine at Columbia, where Derek had gone.

“Why are you all up so early?” Julienne’s younger sisters Izzie and Madeleine stumbled into the room, exhausted. Madeleine was seventeen, a senior in high school, having skipped a grade in elementary school. It didn’t really make much of a difference to her though, as she was always the oldest in her class anyway; now she was just barely the youngest. Izzie was twelve, and while she was just intelligent as her siblings, she was dyslexic, so had remained in her own grade. It was annoying at first, but she had eventually gotten used to it. She was also the only Shepherd to look more like Meredith than Derek. She was quite petite, and had her mother’s dirty-blonde hair. She also had green eyes, like Julienne, who was twice her age at this stage. Madeleine and Izzie had always been close, being the youngest. For six years, they’d been the only two still living at home, with Julienne and the twins off at college, until their had moved back a few weeks previously. They had gotten used to the absence of the music which had filled the house; Julienne, Mark and Alex had gone, with their flute, clarinet and saxophone taken with them. Madeleine played piano and cello but the fact that there was only of them playing music meant that the house was still unusually quiet most of the time. Of course, as soon as Julienne had come home, that changed. As well as playing the piano and flute a lot, she found it easier to study while listening to music. As much as Madeleine and Izzie had complained about this, it felt right for their house to be filled with music again. It was something they’d grown up with.

Once they were all finished their pancakes, the five Shepherds got ready to leave. At seven, Madeleine and Izzie got a lift to school with Meredith and Derek, and Julienne drove herself to Seattle Grace Hospital, picking up Heather and Andy on her way.

“Can you believe we’re interns?” Heather asked as she climbed into the backseat of the Mini Julienne had received as a birthday present two years earlier.

“Nope. Not one bit.” Andy said from the passenger seat. “I’m terrified.”

“I’m just afraid people will figure out who my parents are.” Julienne said.

“Same. It’s going to be confusing, you know, both being Dr. Grey.”

“My parents got used to it fairly quickly.” Andy said.

“I guess so, but they weren’t both interns together.”

“Yeah, you’re right. I’m afraid I won’t answer to Dr. Yang. I’ll probably end up correcting someone inadvertently and blow my cover.” Andy laughed a little.

“I’m afraid I’ll do that too. And it’s kind of a bigger deal for me, with my dad being Chief and all. I don’t want people to think I got in just because of my parents. I want them to think I got in because I’m going to be a damn good doctor.” Julienne said as they approached the car park.

“We are all going to be damn good doctors. And if it’s because surgery’s in our genes, so be it. We didn’t ask for our parents to both be surgeons, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use it to our advantage.” Heather said. “But I’m still nervous of the first shift. I don’t think I can keep going for 48 hours straight.”

“Me neither.” Julienne said quietly. She hadn’t really thought much about the long shift they were facing into. It was all kind of daunting.

Before long, they were standing outside Seattle Grace’s main entrance.

“Are we ready for this? Like actually ready?” Andy asked them nervously as they hesitated to go in. Julienne thought about this for a moment.

“I think we are.” She said. “No, scratch that, I know we are.”

And the three of them walked into the foyer, to begin their first shift.

A/N - Okay, I’m not entirely happy with this chapter. It’s kind of only an introduction, just to catch you up on all the things that have changed in the past twelve years. The next chapter will be more exciting.
