Could It Be
Chapter One – Why Must You Do This To Me?
Hikari threw her schoolbag onto the floor. She was so angry she didn’t notice she accidentally hit her cat, Miko with her bag. The cat ran out of the room. Hikari fell onto her bed and tried to calm down.
“Stupid Takeru!”
“What’s wrong with you?” Her brother Taichi asked.
“Nothing.”
“Well… you need to do the dishes. I’m going.”
“Where are you going?” Hikari sat up.
“A date… duh.”
Hikari didn’t realize how late in the evening it was. Every other day she had cram school, something she hated with a passion. She sighed and fell back again.
Taichi had already left. Maybe some dishes would calm her, so she went ahead and did them.
‘He just doesn’t get it… stupid Takeru…’

The school bell rang and of course, Hikari was just on time. She seated herself before the teacher got after her.
“Hikari!” Daisuke exclaimed happily from the desk next to hers.
“Hello, Daisuke.” Hikari rolled her eyes and laughed at his silliness.
“I’m not late!” A blonde boy stepped into the classroom. A few people giggled at him. The teacher glared and wrote his name on the board for the fifth time this week.
“Takeru, detention.”
“Again? You know that doesn’t do anything, right?”
“Maybe suspension would suffice.”
“No thanks!” Takeru rushed to his desk.
Takeru was the class clown. Everybody loved him. He took a seat next to her.
“Hiya,” he whispered to her.
She didn’t answer. The last thing she needed right now was another detention because of him.
“Still not talking to me? Come on, Hikari…”
“Takeru!” The teacher snapped.
“I’m not disturbing anyone.”
“Yes you are.” Hikari said. “Excuse me, can I move to another seat?”
At this point, the teacher didn’t even care anymore. “Go ahead.”
Hikari gathered her things and went to the back of the classroom. She didn’t want him to bother her.
At lunch time, everyone took out their bento boxes and gathered in little groups around the room. Daisuke ate with Hikari to keep her company. Takeru seemed to have forgotten all about earlier and was flirting with some of the girls in the class.
“I can’t stand him anymore.” Hikari said with food in her mouth.
“Then why do you keep looking at him?”
“Because! He…” She couldn’t come up with a good defense, so she just kept quiet.
“He has changed a lot.” Daisuke mentioned. “Didn’t he used to be shy?”
“I think Yamato influenced him somehow… or maybe it was all the attention he got as soon as he came here.”
“He’s definitely got a lot of pride.” Daisuke pointed out.
“He’s not the guy he used to be…” Hikari sighed.
Although Daisuke was still head over heels for Hikari, he was finally starting to realize that they would probably never be together. She loved Takeru—he knew that. They spent the rest of their lunch in silence, trying to ignore everyone around them.
Gym class came. Hikari went into the locker room to change and was met up by her friend Miyako. (Yolei)
“Hey!” Miyako said.
“Hello…” Hikari still wasn’t very happy; she had to spend the entire school day with Takeru so there was no way she could get him off of her mind. Why did they always have to end up in the same class together?
“Still angry?” Miyako asked, putting on her shoes.
“Of course I am.”
They made their way out to the track. Every day they were supposed to do at least five laps around and then they would do whatever the activity was that day.
At least there was one thing Hikari still was happy about—she could run faster than Takeru any day.
After her five laps, Hikari and Miyako went over to a nearby tree for some shade and to rest their legs. Unfortunately, Takeru followed.
“Hey, girls.” He sat down across from them in the sunlight.
“Hey.” Miyako said, but Hikari just turned her head away.
“Why are you mad at me?” Takeru whined. “I’ve been nothing but nice to you…”
Hikari got up and left.
A while back, she was going to confess her feelings to him after one of Yamato’s concerts. Once she was able to get him alone for one moment, it was suddenly interrupted by a mob of older high school and college girls. They completely adored him. The problem was, Takeru actually seemed to like the attention. He flirted back with them right in front of her. Over time, it only got worse. The first day of high school it was like he was an instant celebrity. Not only that, he was invited to tons of parties, went on quite a few dates and seemed to have completely ignored her existence. After the craze sort of died down, he came crawling right back to her, trying to be her friend and whatnot. However, at this point, Hikari was too fed up with him.
Now he was one of the most well liked guys in the school. It definitely boosted his ego. All the girls loved him, the guys wanted to hang out with him and it seemed like he had no time for her anymore. Even when she tried to be his friend, something always interrupted them. She missed the old days…
So she’s kept her love for him a secret all this time, wondering if she’ll ever get a chance to let him know. And if she did… would he even care?
It killed her to keep her distance from someone she’s cared about for so long, but he seemed just fine. Sure, he was always curious as to why she ignored him, but if it hadn’t occurred to him by now then it probably never will.
“Hikari!” Miyako found her in the locker room. Hikari had already changed back into her uniform and was just ready to go home.
“Takeru wanted me to tell you something.”
Although she was interested, she couldn’t keep giving in. “I don’t want to hear it.”
“But he—“
Hikari grabbed her bag and started on her way home, since the bell would ring any second now.
She decided to stop by the soccer field and watch her brother’s practice. She took a seat on the bleachers. Taichi noticed her and came over.
“What are you doing here?” He asked.
“Boredom.”
“Uh huh…” Taichi thought nothing of it and went back to the field.
He was a third year. Being one of the best players on the soccer team, he was also popular. Hikari was only known as his little sister. She didn’t want everyone to know her, however. She’s seen first hand what it could do to people.
‘Ugh… why am I doing this…?’
She wanted to tell Takeru her feelings—she really did. But it felt like it wouldn’t matter to him at all.
Besides, he’s got better things to do than to be with her all the time.
It just wasn’t the same anymore.

“Hikari!”
“Hey, Takeru!”
He smiled at her; she looked away so he couldn’t see how red her face was.
“So sorry I’m late… I…”
“That’s okay.” Hikari laughed. “At least you’re here.”
Takeru blinked. “Yeah. I wouldn’t miss your birthday… you know that.” He took out a small box wrapped in pink ribbon. “Here you go.”
“Thank you…” Hikari opened it. Inside was a necklace in the same shape as her crest.
“Let me put it on for you.” Takeru went behind her and did so. “There.”
“Thanks so much! I love it!”

Hikari reached into her bag and pulled out the necklace Takeru gave her last year. As much as she wanted to get rid of it, it was all of him she had left.
