Abandonment Issues

Of Immortals, Children, and Secrets

Disclaimer: I was looking around in the cupboard, but all I found was a map to Atlantis and the holy grail. :(

Lucy stared at him coldly. "What do you want?"

"Just to talk." Jack shrugged, glancing around. "Can I come in?"

"No." She snapped, shifting, the gun heavy in her pocket and slightly comforting. "What do you want?"

Jack bit back a sigh. "You just disappeared after..."

"After I shot Harry?" She finished for him, watching him.

He looked uncomfortable. "Yes. You just vanished; didn't even show up for the funeral."

Lucy could have told him she was actually in the hospital during the funeral, but decided the less he knew, the better. "Does it matter?"

"You were his wife. And you shot him." Jack looked at her. "The Doctor said he's known the Master for a long time, and that he has the tendency to come back. Do you think he'll be happy with you?"

Inwardly, she said yes. Out loud, "Mister Harkness," she said with more contempt than he actually remembered from her during the Year, "if you have something to say, then I suggest you say it now."

He stepped forward. "Lucy, we can help you. If the Master does come back, you won't be safe."

"If Harry does come back," Lucy glared at him, "you lot will be the last to know."

Jack frowned at her. "Lucy, you need to understand, he-"

"Get out of my house." She cut him off. "Get away from me. And stay away."

She tried to shut the door, put he pushed it back open. "Mrs. Saxon, we will be in touch."

Scowling, Lucy tugged the door back open and aimed the pistol at him. "I said, get out." She watched him through narrowed eyes as he backed up a few steps, then she closed the door, locking it.

"By the way," Jack's voice was muffled slightly by the door. "Tell your daughters I said hello."

Lucy felt suddenly very cold.

Skye was sitting on the floor of her room, knees pulled up to her chest, arms wrapped around her legs. Eveleen sat beside her, trying to read her book, except she'd read the same paragraph about four times now. Both jumped when the door opened.

"We're going on a bit of a holiday." Lucy smiled shakily at them. "Pack some things and come downstairs."

Skye blinked at her. "Why?"

"And what about school?" Eveleen asked.

Lucy kept smiling. "Don't worry, just...gather your stuff together and hurry down."

"Mum?" Skye asked in a small voice. "Is something wrong?"

The smile slipped a bit. "Probably not. We're just going on a trip, loves. Everything'll be fine, I promise." And she closed the door.

The two sisters looked at each other. Then, as one, they stood, Eveleen leaving for her room.

Skye fished her bag out from under her bed and put in some clothes, a few books, and some things to draw with. Across the hall, Eveleen packed her own similarly, and the two met in the hall. They stopped at the stairs for a moment, then walked down hand-in-hand.

Lucy was waiting for them at the door, a few bags already packed and sitting there innocently. They set down their bags and Lucy walked over to them, and pulled them to her in a hug. "It will all be fine. I won't let anything happen to you." She pulled back and kissed both their foreheads, then sighed. "Let's go."
