Author's note: Little House is awesome!

Mary Kendall held her sleeping 2-year-old daughters in arms. Charlotte Martha and Caroline Mary were just as pretty as Mary had been at that age, sparkling blue eyes and gold as honey blonde hair, which is what Ma had said.

The dreaded day was almost over and Thank Goodness to that. It was almost 10 at night, 2 more hours. Mary sat down in the rocker in the girl’s room. Adam had asked her to come to bed, but she was not about to leave her daughters, not that night she couldn’t. She had already lost a baby that day. Seven years before she had lost her baby boy, Adam Jr., whom she loved very much. Not a night after it for a long time had she been able to erase the sound of her baby crying, Alice yelling for help, Hester-Sue’s screams when she saw them in the window, the heat from the fire on her skin, the children or Adam cries, and the feeling of being helpless when you are needed so from her mind, but now a days it rarely crossed her mind more than a couple of times a week.

She felt it was her fault if she would have grabbed the baby before she had gone to get the kids out 2 people would still be alive. She had been a bad mother and cost Alice Garvey her life. Not just Adam and Alice died that night, but part of Her and Adam because he was their son, a part of them, Jonathan because he loved Alice more then anything and Andy because he was her son and apart of the fire she always hoped she could have another baby. Five years later when she had Charlotte and Caroline her faith that God would provide was rewarded.

Mary felt Charlotte’s curls and Caroline’s straight hair. They would have never been born if Mary and Adam had never moved to New York. Adam becoming a lawyer was the only reason for moving and he was only a lawyer because he regained his sight. He would have never been able to see again if he hadn’t been stumbling around in Jonathan’s freight. The Garveys and she and Adam moved to Sleepy-Eye because it was too hard to stay in Walnut Grove. Maybe in a way the fire was a mixed blessing. It had caused a great deal of bad, but a little good had come out of it. Charlotte and Caroline were just 2 of those good things. Adam regaining his sight was another. The year before the girls were born Jonathan met and married a woman named Claire Earl and everyone thought that it was a blessing (except Andy but that’s another story).

Adam walked into the bedroom and said: “Mary, are you coming to bed? Because if not I’ll stay with you.” Mary smiled.

“I think I’ll come to bed but first can you help me put the girls to bed,” She asked. Adam took Charlotte from Mary’s arms.

“Come on Charlie time for bed,” Adam joked. The little girl yawned. Adam laid her down in the bed that was at least twice as big as her.

Mary put Caroline next to her in the bed. Adam and Mary gave each girl a kiss. Then, Adam put his arm around Mary; they walked out of the room and shut the door.

“Our two little blessings!” Mary said. A smile came over her face and she looked like an angel. Adam had missed her smile. She hadn’t smiled once in the past month, but now she would forever smile because her little baby was in heaven, with God and her other 2 were on Earth, with her and her husband.

The End.
