Because Cristina took forever in the bathroom.
The two roommates had a system: Cristina got to use the bathroom first. The end. She would even wake up extra early to make sure she was the first to use the hot water, not even a single care in the world if Callie was about to pee herself. She was first, and that was that. Callie didn't mind a whole lot, which made this system even better.
But today, Cristina took forever in the bathroom. And Callie was pissed. Because now she was going to be late to work and she had an early surgery. Not to mention, of course, a girlfriend that she was really looking forward to meeting in the stairwell before said early surgery.
Callie swore under her breath as she tried putting her shoes on, only to realize that she had been trying to shove her right foot into her left shoe. Today was not a good day. After finally deciphering the difference between her left and right sides and on her way out of the apartment, the now-running-late orthopedic surgeon swore once more when her cell phone started having a spaz attack. The phone that she had left somewhere in her room. Fantastic. It was even better when she saw that it was her sister, Aria, calling her. The same sister that had ceased speaking to her last week.
"Seriously?!" Callie groaned, and flipped the now annoying device open, turning all sound and movement and anything else that could make it have a seizure off. She looked at the time and immediately flew out of the door, hoping that she wouldn't miss her surgery. Which was in ten minutes. It took her five minutes to get to the hospital, shaving off six minutes by speeding like a crazy soccer mom.
"You're late," Mark said casually as she shoved the door to the scrub room open.
"I know. Cristina took forever in the bathroom."
"Really now?" he smirked, leaning against the sink.
"Shut up," she rolled her eyes and quickly dried her hands. The gallery was nearly empty when she walked into the OR, which was to be expected during an orthopedic surgery. There were very few people interested in "carpentry" as some liked to call it. Personally, Callie just felt that most people were not badass enough for bones.
Callie was badass enough. She found out she was badass back in med school. Doctor Perrin, the orthopedic attending that ultimately retired last year, found out that she was badass when she completed a lumbar spinal fusion as a second year resident. Arizona Robbins found out that she was badass a few nights ago, but that is a completely different story that is unrelated to surgery.
"Hey. I tried calling you this morning when I didn't see you during rounds. Was your phone turned off?"
"Oh, yeah. Sorry." Callie gave Arizona a small, apologetic smile and retrieved her cell phone to show that she was turning it back on.
"So, are you going to be on-call tonight?"
"Yes, unfortunately. The chief was desperate and I, well, need the money."
"It won't be too terrible," a smirk made its way onto Arizona's face.
"Really now?" Callie had one to match.
"I switched with Hunt, so I could work tonight,"
"Then I guess you're right. It won't be too terrible." Callie didn't realize it at first, but her phone had been beeping at her.
"You have a new message, by the way." Arizona commented.
"I know."
"Are you going to check it?"
"Nope."
Arizona looked at her with quizzical eyes.
"I'll see you at lunch?" Callie kissed her briefly after receiving a nod, and headed off to another patient. Her phone started ringing as she walked along the hall, and she turned it off without even bothering to glance down at it. She knew that it was her sister calling. It was a bit odd, though, how here sister was frantically calling her. Callie had tried contacting her so many times before, but was always dismissed. There was no family emergency; otherwise some sort of message would be left, so Callie just didn't bother answering.
Until, of course, she had missed another call from Arizona.
"That's twice now that I've tried calling but you phone has been turned off," the pediatric surgeon said. "Am I missing something, here? Did I do something wrong?"
"No, no. You have done nothing wrong." Callie reassured her. "I'm just trying to avoid my sister,"
"The same one that kept ignoring all of your calls before?" Arizona asked as the two descended from the stairwell.
"Yes. She's called me at least twelve times today. I don't know why, either, since she doesn't bother to leave any messages,"
Arizona tilted her head and thought for a moment, a piece of her hair falling carelessly from her usual not. "Perhaps you should just talk to her. See what she wants. Maybe your family is finally starting to understand."
"Was it the entirety of my bank account being cleared that gave it away?" Callie asked mockingly.
"Come on, Calliope. Just...talk to her. Please? For me?"
Callie bit her lip and stared down at her phone. It read TWO MISSED CALLS in bright red letters. Sighing, she flipped it open and dialed.
Arizona smiled and kissed her lightly on the cheek. "I'll meet you out front,"
It rang. And rang. And rang again. There was no answer. Her sister's voice appeared, say that she could return the call as soon as possible. Callie exhaled. The cool voice of an automated woman came on the line, explaining how she could leave a message and a call back number after the resounding beep. Callie was tense now. It took nearly thirty seconds for the beep to sound, and she was torn between leaving the message in two different languages.
"Oye, es Calliope. Sólo quería volver a sus llamadas a partir de hoy." she left it at that, hanging up as soon as she could. She only spoke in Spanish when she was mad, and her sister knew that.
"So, did you talk to her?" Arizona asked when the two met up by the front entrance of the hospital.
"No, she wasn't there. But I did leave a message," she added upon seeing the look on the blonde's face.
"Well, at least the both of you are trying. Which is more than the rest of your family can say,"
Callie nodded in agreement, letting Arizona take her hand. Today had been a particularly not-so-great day, and she didn't have a lot of hope for the rest of the week.
Because Cristina took forever in the bathroom.
New story. Has no real time, but I suppose it could take place after the wedding. I promise that it won't conflict with OSW.
