Visions of light
The dark night was quiet; the only sound to interfere with the seemingly calm evening was the soft whistling of the wind, blowing through fallen leaves on the ground. The street was deserted, and the only thing the streetlamps were doing, was throwing bright spotlights on the grey pavement. The whole thing was a little unsettling, when thinking about all the other nights – usually there were always someone out in the street then, no matter the time. But on this one there wasn’t. It was like the whole town unconsciously knew that something was supposed to happen, and even the animals held their breath in anticipation…
The silence was suddenly disturbed as a piercing scream was released, and slowly penetrated the dark night like a needle. If anyone would have followed it, they could have seen a small house in the outskirts of town, built just before a large forest. The house used to have a warm and friendly feeling to it – just like its residents – but it had suddenly changed to a grey dull aura, and would never change back ever again.
A quiet sobbing could be heard. The girl was sitting in the living room, unstoppable tears rolling down her wet cheeks. Her once white nightdress was bloody and torn to shreds but also partly covered by her long auburn hair that normally would have been smooth and well kept, but right now was ruffled and uneven.
Her world had crushed down around her without any warning. There was nothing she could do to change that fact, only accept it and move on… But it wasn’t as easy as it sounded.
Shivering, she took a deep breath and stood up, even though it felt as if her legs would give away at any moment, and tried not to look at the horrible sight before her. Three dead bodies lying in a big pool of crimson blood.
In a dazed, dream-like state, she slowly wandered out in the cold woods, her mind slowly drowning in her silent tears. Yes, her parents had lost something important that evening… and so had she.
Elie gasped as she woke up from her deep slumber, and feverishly tried to catch her breath. A dream, she tried to calm herself, it was only a dream. She slowly lifted her hands to brush away a lock of hair that was astray, and opened her eyes to find out, that it was still night. She waited a moment till her eyes had adjusted to the darkness of her room. Then she quietly slipped out of bed, and shakily walked into her little bathroom.
Her eyes had to once again adjust to the light, which was much brighter this time, and she absentmindedly turned on the faucet at the sink. The splash of cold water she threw in her face woke her up. She took a deep breath and tried to collect her thoughts. It was only a dream, she tried to reassure herself once again, even though it didn’t help much this time too. She turned off the faucet and looked blankly at her reflection in the mirror. She was a mess. She had dark rings under her eyes as a result of missing sleep; her short brown hair was tousled and she was beginning to look pale. Worse was the haunted look on her face. She couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit scared, since she had been having the same dream, no nightmare; she corrected herself, for the last four nights. The scary part was that the girl looked exactly like her, and she would see her look-alike getting killed every time she closed her eyes. She shivered and bit her lip as she looked away from the mirror. She could still see the dead bodies and feel the blood on her hands. For some reason, she could feel what the girl had felt, but still look at the scene from a different point of view. She felt the fear as the blade neared her and the pain that shot through the fragile body as it slowly gave up and let out its last breath.
Shaking her head she tried to get the scene out of her head, before she walked in her room and looked at the clock. 4 am. She wouldn’t get more sleep.
She lit the lights and again walked out into her bathroom to shower. It was almost becoming an obsession of hers. She felt dirty every time she thought about the dream, and it was heaven to let the warm water wash it all away.
With a firm expression on her face, she started to dress, and slowly changed into a cowboy skirt and a white tank top. She then put on her favourite foot wear – a pair of brown boots that matched well with the rest of the outfit. The thoughts about her dream were severely pushed aside, and she looked in the mirror with a confident look, when she quickly had brushed her hair. She then tried to smile to cover up her worn out expression, and headed down for breakfast. She, Elie Valentine, wouldn’t let her first day on her new school be ruined because of a stupid nightmare!
On the way to school she had been feeling like someone was following her, but she quickly ignored it and started to think about the new town her and her parents had moved to. It was small, but still had what was necessary to make people comfortable. She had only been there for four days, and hadn’t had any chance to go out and explore it, since there had been a lot of cleaning and unpacking to do. She suddenly started to get nervous. What if nobody liked her and she would be all alone? Shaking her head she tried to think of something else. I wonder what the school is like... she didn’t fulfil her thought, since she in the next moment heard someone yell, and run out from a corner straight ahead. However when he’d noticed her it was already too late. They hit the ground with a loud ‘thump’ and she faintly felt her back ache.
She opened her eyes, which had closed shut at the impact, and stared into steel grey depths. The boy on top of her was fairly handsome; she had to admit that to herself, and had to fight to keep down her blush. He had to be around her age, judged by his looks. Why is he just staring at me? Why isn’t he getting off?
She cleared her throat in hope of getting his attention. Her back was really starting to hurt. The boy blushed crimson and quickly got off her. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t look where I was going; I was just searching for Plue.” He looked embarrassed and smiled nervously.
“It’s okay. I should have noticed you were coming instead of walking around and daydream.” She smiled back and sat up with a wince.
“Are you okay?” He said worriedly and helped her up. “Yeah. Thank you.” She looked around and noticed her bag lying on the ground.
The boy must have followed her gaze, because he was giving it to her in the next moment. She smiled and thanked him again. “I have to go now; maybe I'll see you around!”
With that she happily continued her walk for school, however the feeling of being followed was still luring under the surface.
