Disclaimer: I do not own Star Trek.
This is my first attempt at a story like this, so please bear that in mind. It’s a sort of timeline of events set to the song “A moment like this”, which inspired the story after hearing it on the radio. Enjoy! I hope…
What if I told you it was all meant to be?
Would you believe me, would you agree?
It’s almost that feeling that we’ve met before
So tell me that you don’t think I’m crazy
When I tell you your love has come here and now
Hardly aware of what I was doing, I pressed myself against him, pushing him into the wall. I took his hand in mine and told him everything he meant to me, and poured out my feelings to him.
I saw a stunned look in his eyes and instantly regretted my actions, feeling like a silly school girl. Looking down, I could not begin to fathom how I felt at that moment, nor could I find the words. He let go of my hand.
“I’m sorry” he whispered, and then fled out the door.
A moment like this, some people wait a lifetime
For a moment like this, some people search forever
For that one special kiss
I can’t believe it’s happening to me
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
Through the weeks that followed, we both did our best to put that whole fiasco behind us. Once my feelings of unrequited love were put aside, I found it much easier to accept being just his friend, because it was, after all, better than nothing. However, at the back of my mind there was always that memory, and always a part of me that wondered if something more could ever have been possible.
Then one day, the best day of my life, he asked me to dinner.
Everything changes but beauty remains
Something so tender I can’t explain
Well, I may be dreaming but till I awake
Can we make this dream last forever?
And I’ll cherish all the love that we share
I remember the first proper date that we had; when he decided to take me one a romantic walk through the gardens of a planet that we had arrived at only hours before. I walked along as if in a dream, and I seemed to see everything as a rose tinted version of what it really was. Then he took my hand and led me to a quiet area of the garden, where we watched the sun set and the planet’s three moons come out of hiding. Then as the night got cold, he gave me his jacket.
Brushing his fingers through my hair he whispered “I love you.”

He took me to my favourite restaurant in Paris, and got us a table by the window with a romantic view. The sun was setting as we began our meal by the light of candles, and the flowers on the table recreated the atmosphere from that planet when we had our first date.
The evening was magical, with my favourite music, my favourite venue and above all (although it may sound cheesy), my favourite man. Then suddenly, he got down on one knee and my stomach started doing somersaults. The idle chatter of the people around us faded into a background buzz and my vision narrowed so that he filled it completely.
Through tears of happiness, I barely managed to whisper “Yes!” Completely forgetting the fact that there were people in the room, I kissed him until the world faded out completely and I was in a blissful dream.
Could this be the greatest love of all?
I wanna know that you’ll catch me when I fall
So let me tell you this
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this
He stood by me in the hospital that day when I was rushed in after crashing my air car. Through the pain and the drugs I remembered him sitting by my side and clutching my hand as if afraid to let it go.
He nursed me back to health after I was released, bringing me breakfast in bed and putting up with my whining at being trapped inside the house. He was forever patient and understood when I just needed to “cool down”, rather than pressuring me. He was the one that helped me piece back my life after the accident.

The cry of the baby distracted me from the pain that I felt, and I saw him gaze at me in admiration. I lay back, exhausted, and watched as the midwives brought the baby over to me.
He was the most beautiful baby boy that I had ever seen! He had his father’s deep brown, intelligent eyes, which gazed at me in the almost unblinking way that only babies can do. I carefully fingered his tiny fingers and toes, marvelling at how this baby boy will one day grow into a full grown man. I fingered his slightly pointed ears, which seemed so beautiful and yet unreal on an infant this small.
Gazing up into his eyes, I was delighted to see a smile on his face, and I grinned back, tears of happiness forming in my eyes. He leaned down and kissed me lightly, and in that instant I knew that he would always support me and the child.

Looking back on it all now I can scarcely believe my luck. I stroll through the park with him, hand in hand, and we watch as our children play. Every time I look at them I am reminded of the miracle of life, and the man I shared it with.
With a contented sigh I look up at the sky, which had been our home for that fateful five year mission and so many after it before we had settled down to start a family. Grinning, I returned my attention to my husband, wishing it could last forever.
